Re: Why I said "No" to the Cornell Fund - 21 years ago
Thanks for reading at least part of my letter. You missed the bit about considering "supporting the University in other, directed ways." I'm not sure what I'm after. Someone saying "We understand that we screwed up, and we're sorry," would be a good start. They've admitted to me that they screwed up. They need to say it in public. They need to stop ignoring their biggest fansby mha - Hockey

Why I said "No" to the Cornell Fund - 21 years ago
(A letter to the Cornell Fund folks in Alumni Affairs & Development, as well as Athletics Development. CCd to assorted people.) This evening I received a call from a nice young lady, a junior at Cornell, thanking me for my past generosity with donations to the University, and asking me to consider a donation to the Cornell Fund again this year. I thought about it for a moment, and then saby mha - Hockey
Re: Who should I root for? - 21 years ago
Yeah, you really should root for the ECAC team, and in any case you should be rooting against BU, but you are under no moral obligation to actually shout "Go Crimson." Expressing pleasure when they score, or when a BU player is sent to the box, is fine. Bring along the barf bag, just in case.by mha - Hockey

I would love to enjoy the first one, but I never got it. In theory, someone in the band had one for me...by mha - Hockey
Re: [Road trip] North Country? - 21 years ago
I'd love to go, but the crazy Saturday-and-Sunday schedule may make it impossible for me. (That was done to allow a little cushion time for teams coming back from holiday tourneys; getting the Big Red back from Florida proved a real problem one winter.) If I'm not flying to California on Monday the 6th, then a slightly skewed away weekend seems like a fine idea. No doubt Potsdam's a hoppin' plaby mha - Hockey
Re: forgotten cheer - 21 years ago
I think the volume of the last several minutes on January 30th, 1998 against Clarkson outdid it. Rick Sacchetti went off on a five-minute major with seven minutes left, giving Clarkson five minutes of five-on-four to try to snap Cornell's 2-1 lead. The crowd was on its feet, and the roar was deafening, that whole five minutes. I called it "Red Thunder," and while I've been impressed wiby mha - Hockey

Re: Cornell Feed Screw-up - 21 years ago
It's too late for last night, but if this ever happens again while I'm at Lynah and therefore in shoulder-tapping range, feel free to try calling my cell phone . If Laura knows there's a problem, there are people she can contact to let them know. Meantime, no matter what you may think about Laura, Andy, or other involved folks personally, or no matter what you think they think of you, pleasby mha - Hockey
Re: Arm waving - 21 years ago
It died out because Arthur, and many other rink PA announcers, stopped announcing the end of the power play. (Arthur was asked to stop.) If the announcer is no longer saying "___ returns to full strength," it's harder to shout in response, "And they still suck!" For a while, fans were trying to shout the first part themselves, but it just doesn't work as well.by mha - Hockey

Re: Lynah seating - 21 years ago
The low-numbered seats in each row in Section O should be the eastern-most seats, i.e. the ones next to Section N. I think the seat numbers progress around the rink in the same direction as the section letters.by mha - Hockey
Re: Dear ice hockey season ticket holder - 21 years ago
Nope, that e-mail was not sent to me, and I know the Athletic Ticket Office has my e-mail address on file. I'd arrive 30 minutes before gametime anyway, but if they manage to delay people so significantly that a lot of folks are kept from entering before the game starts, it could get ugly. From everything we've heard so far, it sounds as though the athletics staff and CUPD will be reasonable. Gby mha - Hockey
Re: Radio reception - 21 years ago
Yep, my new Audi gets fantastic AM reception, actually, and I can listen to WHCU in my car as long as I'm not inside the parking garage or driving under an overpass or near a traffic light. (Poor Age said the blinking traffic light near his place keeps adding a static burst when he's listening at home.) Sitting in my car for the whole broadcast has limited amusement value, though, especially inby mha - Hockey

I'll be listening, Adam. If that crappy AM radio signal can make it into Lynah this season, that is.by mha - Hockey
Re: Where else to stay - 21 years ago
I agree with Ken. It's good, and it's simple, and I never think of going there. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. I don't think I've even got it in 14850 Dining.by mha - Hockey
Re: Where else to stay - 21 years ago
Yup! I'd feel bad about it, if it were my B&B or I stood to gain from people staying there. I guess I should add that my parents stayed there last summer and thought it was fantastic. (They're picky.)by mha - Hockey
Where else to stay - 21 years ago
I was just working on a web site update for a friend's bed & breakfast, and realized I should share the link here! For those of you visiting Ithaca for upcoming hockey weekends, I encourage you to look at The Coddington Guest House for a place to stay. (Sorry, Beeeej got dibs on my fold-out couch for the next couple of weekends.) It's on South Hill, between Rogan's Corner and the Ithaca Cby mha - Hockey
Re: How will new CIT pricing effect this site? - 21 years ago
Actually, what's nuts has been the way the network bandwidth has been abused by some. The cost of providing the steadily increasing connection to the Internet is astronomical, and the lion's share of the bandwidth is used by a tiny portion of the population. File sharing is one big culprit, but it's not the only one. As has been observed in other threads, nothing is free. Given a choice betweenby mha - Hockey
Re: How will new CIT pricing effect this site? - 21 years ago
I doubt the eLF itself is much of a bandwidth hog. One person viewing one video clip probably takes up more bandwidth than everyone reading all the messages on the Forum all day.by mha - Hockey

Re: How will new CIT pricing effect this site? - 21 years ago
Next fiscal year (July 2003-June 2004) the plan is to begin charging not just for a connection, but for traffic above a certain volume per month. This won't include on-campus traffic, just traffic that involves the "commodity Internet connection," i.e. the link to the outside world. That's where the enormous expense is generated, and where the University feels it should be distributingby mha - Hockey
Re: Final HockeyCam Letter - 21 years ago
Listening to or watching the games online is actually about to become a lot more relevant to students, as many will be travelling out of Ithaca for a month or so from mid-December to mid-January, a period that includes several games.by mha - Hockey
Re: copyrights - 21 years ago
Mike, it seems to me this guy at Harvard is being extremely pleasant with you, and is taking a lot of time to explain his position. He's not dismissing you as a kid, and he's not telling you to buzz off and leave him alone. He's also being very honest. He doesn't feel it constitutes parody, and he can't give you permission to use Harvard's name or something similar to it. He's effectively tby mha - Hockey
Re: Travel to Burlington - 21 years ago
There is no good route to Burlington, but I bet Christine Quinn could offer her experienced thoughts on the least sucky routes. Basically, it's "Get to Albany via your favourite route," then pick from among the suboptimal routes from there to Burlington. Getting to Albany: Route 79 east to Whitney Point, Route 206 east to Bainbridge, I-88 east to Albany. From there, take I-87 north.by mha - Hockey
Re: College Hockey Travel Guide - 21 years ago
Hey, Josh. Feel free to add a line along the lines of "Find out about more eateries through 14850 Dining" with a link to I'd also be happy to have you pull info directly from the 14850 Dining database directly, if you like... and can even deliver it in the CHTG's format.by mha - Hockey
Re: Steht auf, wenn Ihr Rote seid... - 21 years ago
Jim, it's not so much the use of the term "townies" to refer to the townies that I object to. It's the lumping of everyone who's not a student into a category in which not everyone fits. I'm not a townie, I'm an alum. Many of the other people in Lynah who aren't students aren't townies; they're faculty members or staff at the University. This isn't about town-gown relations.
