Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Brown at Cornell - 13 years ago
Kyle Rose Modern NCAA rules make teams like the late-90's Schafer-led squads impossible, because they would wind up taking 70 PIM every game, so what kind of game do you run in that situation? Cart before horse, but it's an interesting question nonetheless. The late 90s (i.e., after 96-97) Schafer squads would take 70 PIMs per game under "modern" NCAA rules (honestly, people, they haby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Quick Question - Women's ticketing? - 13 years ago
jtwcornell91 KeithK I hear the squad has improved a little bit since the '90s. Nice understatement. BTW, I noticed that there was a new red banner in the rafters, but the three new white banners had not appeared yet. Are they waiting to do some sort of raising at the first non-exhibition home game? That would be pretty sweet. I wish I could get out there to see a game this year, but it'sby Tom Lento - Hockey

Jim Hyla I hope all you optimists are correct. For me, I'm disheartened rather than excited. I still firmly believe we need excellent defense to compete with the big boys. Maybe Yale will prove me wrong, but I think a high powered offense can win in the ECAC, but once you get to the NCAAs, everyone has a high powered offense, and they all have better offensive players than we will ever have. Josh '99 Tom Lento Robb Tom Lento Three of those NCAA trips were in the last two years. Wow, I knew Schafer had a good system, but that IS quite an accomplishment! Well, that was stupid. Fixed.I figured you were just giving Schafer credit for all the successful clutching and grabbing the wrestling team has done in recent years. Towerroad Trotsky I think we have a fairly good idea of what Schafer teams are. He's not going to change significantly, ever. It's build out from the net and open it up only to the degree that you are still secure behind the puck. That's the girl what brung us. It is hard to disagree. The "Schafer System" is what it is and it is unlikely to change, ever. It has brought us to whereby Tom Lento - Hockey

Cactus12 In danger of stating the obvious... it seems that our players are becoming increasingly present at the NHL level. I didn't really observe this even 5 years ago (perhaps I wasn't paying close enough attention at the time?). Any statistics/opinions? I think college players in general are more prevalent at the NHL level than they were even 10 years ago. If anyone has the time I'd be interby Tom Lento - Hockey

billhoward Let's hope the divorce rate stays aorund 50% and we catch big-city professors at Penn and Georgetown on the rebound, looking for a change of scenery. As long as they're either under 25 or not looking for a significant relationship with a person of their own age, Ithaca should suit them just fine. :pby Tom Lento - Other Sports

Jim Hyla Tom Lento ajh258 Josh '99 KeithK And what about this: Altered the delayed-penalty rule to provide the non-offending team a power play, even if a goal is scored during the delay. Funny, I ate at Zsa Zsa's the night they opened and had the exact same experience you describe here. I'm amazed they're still around. Hope the mall food wasn't too terrible.by Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Places to eat in Ithaca - 14 years ago
For a good beer selection and decent food you can try the Ale House downtown. If you don't mind a bit of a drive you can get good burgers and an interesting location at the Rogue's Harbor Inn. I believe it's up on 34 along the lake. Personally, I always thought Ruloff's was overrated. It's not bad, I just don't like it as much as some of the others around these parts.by Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead

Rita Tom Lento scannon I was at the game and it was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. San Jose just dominated the Avs. Didn't see Murray much because Colorado barely played any offense. SOG was 51 to 16 then San Jose toss it in their own net. Unreal. I adopted the Sharks as my NHL team when I moved out to the Bay Area. I suppose this is what I get. Sigh. Murray had a couple of high-profile mistakes in that game (1 that led to an Avs goal and the OT giveaway) but overall I thought he played pretty well. It's always hard to tell on TV, but he was getting a lot of ice time and had some good shifts on the PK. I think he's one of SJ's top 4 at this point. That game was nuts. French Rage So we lost 6-2, to a team that lost 6-2, to a team that lost 8-1. If BC beats Wisconsin does that make us the worst team ever? I don't know about worst team ever, but it does mean Cornell would lose to BC by at least 16 goals. This is clearly because defensive systems are inferior, and run-and-gun teams like BC are built for national success.by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Buh-bye, seniors - 14 years ago
ajh258 Josh '99 Also bear in mind that, per KRACH (i.e., a better ranking system than PWR), UNH should actually have been a slim favorite going into this year's game, despite the fact that Cornell was the higher seed per PWR. I don't think past records has much to do with Friday's game, the team we saw was much different from the team that played two weekends ago. On the other hand, I'm notby Tom Lento - Hockey

Jeff Hopkins '82 Dafatone YankeeLobo Jordan 04 ScrewBUThe belief that you can have 5 shots on goal in a period, get up 1-0, and ride that 40 more minutes to a win is just not going to happen. Re: Regionals Sunday March 28 - BC-Yale - 14 years ago
Jim Hyla Tom Lento I'll eat my words from another thread - Yale does have the talent up front to go toe to toe with BC, at least for this year, and if BC doesn't stop making bad giveaways I like Yale's chances to come back and take this one. HockeyMan These are schoolmarmish banalities trying hard to be profundities. Perfectly obvious points, and entirely in keeping with the core assertion: Schafer's system is a defensively-oriented system that depends to a greater extent than others on superior goaltending. If they're so obvious then why do you still not get the fact that you're flat wrong? If anything, Schafer's system isby Tom Lento - Hockey

Towerroad Tom Lento Thank you for your insightful analysis. I learned a great deal. Elsewhere I have argued that under Schafer Cornell will be a # 10 team with a standard error of +/- 3 So, I buy what you said. Rock solid defense, attention to detail. The shortcomings are a very predictable, simple power play (For a contrast look at UNH's second PP last night where the compressed the defensby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: UHN Pregame Thread (RIT and Denver too) - 14 years ago
HockeyMan As we all know, and as the three Red coaches note proudly in interviews every chance they get, the Schafer system begins and ends with defense. The mantra: take care of things in your own zone and good things will follow at the other end. That’s fine, and indeed unassailable on some level. But what the coaches don't say is that it’s a system that depends on superior goaltending, and onby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: UHN Pregame Thread (RIT and Denver too) - 14 years ago
YankeeLobo You make some good points Tom, you really do. I just feel like Schafer has discovered a way to GAME the system, i.e. the system that college hockey rules allow, to recruit a bunch of big, slow bodies, that can shut down most ECAC teams, but in the long run really don't have a chance of winning a national championship. Aside from 2003, there hasn't been a single Cornell team that I reby Tom Lento - Hockey
