Re: "This Week in ECAC Hockey" - 21 years ago
Marty - while you apparently raised him to be a hockey fan, something went wrong in one of the history lessons. Dryden is class of '69, not '70. But few at Yale will notice.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Check it out - we finally know something! (warning: moderate geekery factor) - 21 years ago
For the history buffs out there, the ECAC used to be bracketed (i.e. 1-8 winner played 4- 5 winner, 2-7 vs. 3-6) until 1971 + or - one year. Since seeds 1, 2 and 3 all won in '70 and '71, I'm not exactly sure in which of the three years ('70 to '72) they switched to the unbracketed format.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Age you gotta explain... - 21 years ago
It's happened before. In the '69-'70 season we were playing SLU in the finals of a Christmas tournament at MSG. Dick Bertrand scored a hat trick, and I and another guy who threw a hat got escorted out. The security guard who ushered us out said "maybe where you come from you can do this" to which I responded "I'm from New York." Ironically, my hat never hit the ice - Bertrby jkahn - Hockey
Televised Games - 21 years ago
Fox Sports New England has BC @ BU on tonight at 7pm EST. Is there any good source for a complete listing of televised games, or several partial listings by conference?by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Cornell Class of 2007 - 21 years ago
Regarding O'Byrne, we've gotten 3 Nanaimo players in the last two years - Lenny, Hornby and Hynes and apparently have another coming next year. Also, even though we lost to Maine by one goal, the value of a Cornell education and degree should be a factor also. Advantage: Big Red (hopefully). Ryan, we'd love to see you in Red.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: free internet - 21 years ago
Lost in all of this is, apparently, is that free internet is a recruiting tool. We've got a number of current players who followed a teammate in junior hockey to Cornell. Perhaps they occasionally tuned in to see how their buddy was doing, and it helped them make the decision that Lynah would be a great place to call home. There are probably kids out there who might have caught part of this grby jkahn - Hockey
Re: 2007 update - 21 years ago
Greg wrote "It also very often happens that the former were fantastic natural talents as players (like Brian), and the latter were mediocre talents who busted their butts every day of their playing career (like Mike)." Having seen Brian play about 45-50 times for the Big Red, including every home game and more than half the away/neutral site games his first two years (soph. and junior)by jkahn - Hockey
Re: First Line - 21 years ago
The '70 1st line was Pettit-Hughes-McCutcheon. the 2nd line was Ryan-Fullan-Bertrand. The 3rd was Aitchison-Duthie-Westner and 4th was Stewart-Brush-Ambis. The defensive pairings were 1) Lodboa-Lowe and 2)Higgs-Giuliani. Ron Simpson was the 5th defenseman. At that time you could only dress 17 skaters plus goalies. The goalie of course was Cropper, backed up by Bob Rule. Others on the squadby jkahn - Hockey

Re: Cornell at Western Michigan, Sat - 21 years ago
Just back in town after being there last night. So here are some impressions from someone who hadn't seen the team live since Estero '00, though I did watch all five televised tournament games we played last year. First, Paolini, Cook and Hynes all were out with injuries. It was the first time I'd seen Lenny in goal, and he couldn't be faulted for either goal as both were on defensive giveawby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Western Michigan - 21 years ago
I'll be there Saturday wearing an old (1966) Cornell jacket with leather sleeves (if I can still fit into it) over a Lynah Faithful t-shirt (circa 2002). I hope to meet some of you at the pre-game gathering. Can't wait to see the Big Red in action. Info from the Cornell Club of West Michigan on the Saturday pre-game: "For anyone arriving early, we've arranged for a casual pre-game gatheby jkahn - Hockey

See including their article on the upcoming series. Though 7-7-1, they've won four in a row and tied Maine at Maine, so they can play top teams very competitively.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Question about the Everblades tournament - 21 years ago
I was there in '00 and the Cornell contingent was fairly small. Lots of hockey parents making a Florida vacation out of it, a bunch of local alumni and some other Cornell hockey nuts that realized that this was a good road trip or who were spending the winter break in the area anyway. Both Maine and Ohio State had more fans, but OSU was probably helped by its football team being in the Outbackby jkahn - Hockey

Re: Where else to stay - 21 years ago
Don't know the entire history, but when I was in school, Coddington's (looks like the same building) was an Italian restaurant on South Hill. The menu was limited, but you'd get a huge bowl of pasta (about 5 choices of shapes) with your choice of sauce (meat sauce, tomato, clam, meatballs) for about $2.50. I probably ate there about 7 to 10 times and it was always excellent.by jkahn - Hockey

Re: Everblades Tourney - 21 years ago
Craig centered the 4th line for the 29-0-0 Cornell team. The line, Doug Stewart-Craig Brush-Eddie Ambis, all sophomores (freshman were still not eligible to play then) was nicknamed "The Buzz Bombs" for their frantic skating pace - generally they'd only get a shift or maybe two a period. I spoke briefly with Craig at the Cornell hospitality room while attending the 2000 Florida tourneby jkahn - Hockey

According to Directv's website, UConn vs. Q-pac is on NESN tonight; so it looks like they will have some games on earlier than the schedule posted above.by jkahn - Hockey

Is the mIrc Chat still active and will anyone be on tonight? If so, I may need a refresher on how to log in. It's been a long offseason.by jkahn - Hockey
'66-'67 - 21 years ago
My fading, but I think accurate, memory recalls the '66-'67 lines, except for a few games in the middle of the season, as follows: First Line: D. Ferguson - M. Doran - D. Ferguson Second Line: B.Ferguson - M. Death - B. Kinasewich Third Line: (1st semester) P. Tufford - B. McGuinn - B. Cornell (2nd semester) T. Coviello - P. Tufford - B. Cornell I think McGuinn was ineligible secby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Goal Rule Question - 21 years ago
Al is correct. But just to claify as the goal line has some thickness, the entire puck needs to cross both sides of the line. If any part is still on (or over) the red goal line, it is not a goal.by jkahn - Hockey
