Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: [OT] Cornell Football Head Coach - 20 years ago
Latest Sun update (1/22) at: There are still three finalists.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Polls - Jan 19 - 20 years ago
After the two games played Tuesday, we moved up to 19 in the quirky PWR. The Providence loss dropped them down and the results of the two games played tuesday must have changed some comparisons for other teams.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: ECHL all-star game - 20 years ago
According to Directv's website, the ECHL All-Star game is being shown tonight on the NHL Center Ice package, channel 745.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Polls - Jan 19 - 20 years ago
Unfortunately, we have fallen to 22 in PWR, which is the only ranking that really counts. Based upon last year's records, we'll either have to go about 13-3 the rest of the way (including ECAC tourney games) to make the NCAA's or qualify by winning the ECAC championship. Let's hope we can do both.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Union - 1 vs Cornell - 1 Final (ot) - 20 years ago
Saw Salmela play live in Estero ( and TV vs. Harvard) and thought he looked very steady out there. He doesn't seem to be making the freshman mistakes or committing bad penalties, which I've seen from O'Byrne and to a lesser extent Glover. The others may have more upside (certainly the Habs think that with O'Byrne), but at this point I like what I've seen from Salmela.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Cornell alumni in the pros: Jan 2004 - 20 years ago
Nice typo when they referred to Rutter as McKee Not a typo. Don McKee is Rutter's coach. They just don't explain that earlier in the article. He's a Canadian and as far as I know, not related to our McKee, but who knows? Post Edited (01-15-04 23:04)by jkahn - Hockey
Re: National P/GM - 20 years ago
Also, games against Penn, McMaster, and Loyola (Montana) in those days. That would be Loyola (Montreal), where they can play some hockey. Also, BC and BU were strong opponents, and we played some other good teams such as U Toronto, then the best team in Canada, and UMD with Chico Resch in goal. If anything, our league now is weaker on a national basis than it was then. Post Edited (01-15-04by jkahn - Hockey
Re: [OT] Cornell Football Head Coach - 20 years ago
Although the critics haven't been as kind this year, here's an SI article from this time last year on Trestman: He's also got a law degree and was Bernie Kosar's QB coach for Miami's first national championship team. Sounds like a damn good candidate to me. Post Edited (01-14-04 18:31)by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Prospect Updates - 20 years ago
As Melissa states, in Canada the term "scholarship" is used for financial aid that does not have to be repaid. Thus, to say they've gotten scholarships to Cornell and will play hockey there is not a mistake by that definition, although it would still be incorrect to say that they've gotten "hockey scholarships." I think what bothers some of us also is that "hockey scholby jkahn - Hockey
Re: short-handed goals - 20 years ago
This goes back a bit, but may be of interest. Dan Lodboa scored twice short-handed on the same Yale PP during a 19-1 win at Yale in the '67-68 season. Lodboa was playing left wing at the time, then moved to defense for his junior and senior seasons. He also had a short-handed goal in the third period of the '70 NCAA final, when he scored three in a row in the third (one PPG, one SHG, one evenby jkahn - Hockey
Re: sign idea that's come too late - 20 years ago
Didn't see the "venue" sign, but Kenny Albert reported that the Cornell fans were chanting "This is our house" in the last minute or so of the game. You could hear the chant in the background but not really make out the words.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Cornell 5 at Harvard 3 FINAL - 20 years ago
Some thoughts from a CSTV viewer: Unsung hero: Ryan Vesce - on ice for all five goals (I think) and just has a way of settling things down on the power play and playing with tremendous intensity at the same time. Never seemed to lose a face-off. Moulson was awesome - by far the best he's looked (in about the dozen times I've seen him play live or on TV), although he's always been solid. Alsoby jkahn - Hockey

Anyone in the Chicago South Suburbs or further south who doesn't want to venture up to Wrigleyville can email me for directions to my place in Flossmoor. Cornell Hockey is the reason why I have DirecTV.by jkahn - Hockey

Re: [OT] Cornell Football Head Coach - 20 years ago
Trestman was the 49ers offensive coordinator under former Cornell coach George Seifert in '95-'96. (11-5 and 12-4). Perhaps George told him some good things about life in Ithaca. Hopefully, if he comes, Trestman will have more success here than Seifert did.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: [OT] Cornell Football Head Coach - 20 years ago
Trestman was considered a brilliant offensive coordinator in '02, and not so in '03. That's the way life in pro sports is. Perhaps he's ready for a change. What's the source of the rumors? I've got a prospective football player I need to call to set up an alumni interview, and I'd love to fill him in if I've got some facts to support the rumor.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Where is the pairwise ranking? - 20 years ago
We moved up to #1 when CC lost the WCHA final to Minnesota. Since the discussion here started based upon whether we can move up enough to gain an NCAA spot even if we don't win the ECAC tournament, it should be noted that if we not beaten Harvard in the ECAC final last year, we would have been #4. Of course, in general it's easier to move up from #13 than from #5, but on the other hand, we canby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Game Thread: Cornell 4, Notre Dame 0 (FINAL) - 20 years ago
Report from Estero: Very impressed with McKee - terrific positioning and poise, despite heavy ND pressure in 2nd period and parts of third. Never seemed to get flustered at all. Our penalties were either on freshman, who will learn to get better position rather than take the penalty, or on Hornby. Of all the freshman, O'Byrne appeared to be the one having the most trouble adjusting to playingby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Go Big Red - 20 years ago
One of my favorite scenes from last season was during the second semi-final at Providence. I turned around and noticed David sitting with his mom and dad three or four rows behind me, and eating his box lunch. It just struck me as a moment that differentiated college hockey (at least Cornell hockey) from the excesses we see in other college sports. And it certainly differentiated David, a cleaby jkahn - Hockey
Re: 29-0-0 - 20 years ago
In the NCAA semis, we were down 1-0 to Wisconsin after 2. Wayne Thomas was stopping everything for them. In the third we scored twice to win 2-1, outshooting them 15-1. If I remember correctly, the goals were from Garth Ryan (or maybe Bob Aitchison) and Bill Duthie, not necessarily in that order. Every time Wisconsin got to the offensive blueline, Dan Lodboa seemed to take the puck and skateby jkahn - Hockey

Went to see the Wolves tonight. I was hoping to write a full report here, but he was a scratch. The place was empty - announced attendance was 3114 but it had to be about 1000. They should play Bâby if only to bring in some local fans. Other recognizable names were Brad Tapper (RPI) for the Wolves and Casey Hankinson (Minn.) and Mike Mottau (BC) for the Cincy Mighty Ducks. Re: [ot] ebay-ing tickets - 20 years ago
On the other hand, as long as "Licensed Ticket Brokers" are allowed to charge whatever they want, I do think that ebay can serve a useful function in ticket sales. For instance, I purchased 2001 World Series tickets for game 6 on ebay, and even though the seller was illegally selling, I paid less than I would have if I purchased from a licensed broker. By cutting out the broker as a mby jkahn - Hockey

Re: What is Faithful? - 20 years ago
Faithful is .... having a team to root for that you always love and never get aggravated at .... waiting on line and sleeping on line three days and nights for hockey tickets (yes there was a line back in Ned's era too). .... telling your math professor who scheduled a prelim for Saturday of the ECAC's that you need to take a make-up because you are going to be in Boston for the tournament ...by jkahn - Hockey
