Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Rankings - 7 years ago
Based on the Pair Wise Metrics on CHN, Cornell has a 76% chance of making the NCAA tournament. To quote that great scholar Al Davis, "Just won Bâby" and all will work itself out.by wakester2468 - Hockey

Re: Looking Ahead - 7 years ago
With two weeks remaining in the regular season and all teams having four games left, and with the top four teams all within two point in the ECAC standings, it seems quite possible that at the end, some teams will be tied with the same total points. I'm looking for some clarity on tie breaking procedures. Obviously head to head is the first deciding factor and I suspect total wins might be nextby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
To me, bracketology is not an obsession but rather a way to keep interest flowing during the week awaiting weekend games. As previously stated, the actual match ups it creates during the season are irrelevant but what it does provide is weekly analysis as to trends and what to expect to see how the committee might view things with all of the possibilities. I enjoy reading both Jason Moy and espby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Adam Wodon's recent article on Pairwise was about the best explanation of the process I've read recently. I wasn't aware that a team under .500 was ineligible for the tournament by rule. This makes me feel a little better about St Cloud. While weekly projections are fun, Adam is correct that they basically are meaningless until the last week and conference playoffs. Another observation which iby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Pair wise Issues - 7 years ago
There seems to be mixed feelings on this subject. Interesting with the just released USCHO coaches poll, the biggest spread between Pairwise and the Poll is St Cloud. Pairwise 12 poll 18. Second biggest difference is North Dakota. To be fair there is a noticeable difference for Union too. Looks like that damn human thing strikes again.by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Pair wise Issues - 7 years ago
I find this discussion very interesting and applies towards one's perspective even outside of sports. Personally, i think statistics are a great tool to help make ones decisions. That being said I will never solely use them eliminating factors statistics can't recognize. To take away the human element in life troubles me. I appreciate hearing all sides of subject though.by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Pair wise Issues - 7 years ago
Ok last word on this, at least for now, NCAA basketball might actually be a better example to use. It is similar in that there are automatic bids to all D1 conferences and then the committee selects the remaining teams. They use many criteria but ultimately they are not locked into them. Thus, like it or not on selection day which is a banner event for basketball, one doesn't know for certain whby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Pair wise Issues - 7 years ago
In actuality, I agree with both of you. My opinion certainly was subjective but I do have an opinion on how the ranking system could be changed. The NCAA football selection committee incorporates both statistical and a subjective human factor. Until November 1st, the only rankings which frankly don't mean much are the polls. Thereafter, weekly the committee meets weekly to establish a top 20 liby wakester2468 - Hockey

What makes elynah a site to enjoy following regularly is the ability to express differing points of view. We obviously disagree and I'm fine with that and enjoy expressing my opinion without reservation. You only gain knowledge by what you learn from others along the way. Politicians would be wise to do the same.by wakester2468 - Hockey
Pair wise Issues - 7 years ago
While I don't claim to be an expert on Pairwise calculations, I do question how conference strength carries so much weight in rankings. It may seem that I am only looking at this from a Cornell perspective but it affects other teams too. I'm not saying conference strength shouldn't matter but when a team specifically St Cloud who has 14 losses, overall is one game over .500 and is under .500 inby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Rankings - 7 years ago
Lets hope it doesn't come to this, but with two weekends left does anyone know what the tie breakers are for final standings for the season? CU quite possibly could tie for any spots from first thru fourth. I'm most curious about the 4th spot with Quin although that would require doing poorly these last four games.by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Rankings - 7 years ago
With five games remaining. each game seems to increase with importance. Hanging around the 13th spot (pairwise) is precarious to say the least. It would be nice to enter the post season firmly secured to an NCAA birth but that's not likely. The old saying, one game at a time is the only approach to take beginning with Brown this afternoon. On paper, this should clearly be a CU win but if therby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Looking Ahead - 7 years ago
First time I've looked at sportsclubstats. Rather cool. Perhaps I am expecting that the top teams will continue to win at the pace we will. The best part is we play both St Lawrence and Union again so much will depend of that. Unfortunately, Harvard has the tie breaker with us based on head to head. In actuality, it may be more likely to catch either the Saints or the Dutchmen. I do still thinby wakester2468 - Hockey
Looking Ahead - 7 years ago
While there are three weekends left in the regular season, it seems inevitable that Quinn and Cornell are positioned for a quarterfinal match up. It is possible that CU could leap frog Harvard in the final standings but not likely. There is a large gap between 5th and 6th place. The big question is will CU get the first round bye and thus host QU. Looking at Pairwise Standings, that series coby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Hockey Broadcasts 2016-17 - 7 years ago
It appears in the New England area NESN Plus Comcast Channel 894 is carrying the game live. While I like being able to watch this game, I'd be curious to hear opinions on what an 8:30 start means for the following night. My guess is probably not too much but it is a little worrisome. Union will be a opponent and should it not go so well on Friday against them, it makes Saturdays game that muchby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: 2016-17 Schedule - 7 years ago
Not sure why I thought the Miami matchup had gone two years but you are correct which means we are most likely obligated to visit Miami next season. To balance of the schedule that means we will likely start another two year home and home series with a new opponent with the first year being at Lynah. I hope it is a Hockey East team not an Atlantic hockey League team which does us no good in Paiby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: 2016-17 Schedule - 7 years ago
While this season thus far is a pleasant surprise, it's always fun to look to the future to speculate who will be on the schedule next year. My guess is BU will return to the Garden but the two year cycle with Merrimack and Miami is completed. Would love to see Cornell play Penn State which would make a lot of sense for both schools. Frankly, Cornell did the Nittany Lions a favor two years goby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Florida College Classic - 7 years ago
After all of the years CU has played in this tournament,I finally made the decision to take it in this year. Let me just say it will be the last time. While most holiday tournaments lack in enthusiasm, this one is particularly bad. I understand the Cornell connection to these games but I believe CU has been more than honorable supporting it. Re: Florida College Classic - 7 years ago
I'm making my first trip to the Florida College Classic this year. Perhaps the most insignificant question on this forum is this. While in Florida I have no intention of wearing anything but shorts if at all possible. Is that the normal attire for games at Germain Arena or should I plan otherwise?by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: ILDN - 7 years ago
If I am not mistaken, last year the ILDN carried the MSG internal broadcast aired in Madison Square Garden. Does anyone know if that will be the case again this year against UNH?by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Dartmouth 11/4/16 - 7 years ago
Two games into the season, lets hope a slow start in games does not becomes a trend. If they can't come out with intensity tonight against Harvard, then we know there is an issue. Being from New Hampshire, it's unusual that I've had the opportunity to attend both games so far and again tonight along with next weekend. One observation is that the home teams have had pathetic crowds and fan supporby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: ILDN - 7 years ago
Just when they finally catch up the audio with the video, the quality of the sound deteriorates. The Inept Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN) really needs to do a thorough examination of what they are doing and how they are ripping off the Lynah Faithful with such an inferior product who can't be at the games and all other IVy League fans who I imagine are suffering with their own broadcasts.by wakester2468 - Hockey
ILDN - 7 years ago
Never been much of a fan of the Ivy League Digital Network overs the past few years. One would think that a simple thing like having the video and audio in sync wouldn't be too much to ask. Watching the game with the audio being seven seconds behind makes it almost unwatchable. Not having a running clock or replay aren't much to ask for either. Being an exhibition game, I hope that they will corby wakester2468 - Hockey
Harvard preseason exhibition - 7 years ago
How is it possible for Harvard to play a preseason game on Oct 8th two weeks prior to the remaining five team not being allowed to start until Oct 21st? Perhaps has something to do with 18U rules but it seems clearly unfair. Any thoughts on this?by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: 2016-2017 Schedule - 7 years ago
Ask and you shall receive. It seemed odd that CU had no game the weekend after the exhibition games. Now even stranger is the solution. Cornell owes Merrimack two games in Andover which traditionally would be on a friday and saturday which was the original plan for early January. Merrimack just released their schedule and Cornell will actually be traveling to Merrimack on the last weekend of Octby wakester2468 - Hockey
2016-2017 Schedule - 7 years ago
It seems later than usual for the official schedule to be published. From what I've seen to this point, there seems to be a hole in the schedule for the last weekend in October. Anyone know if the final schedule is done?by wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: 2016-17 Schedule - 7 years ago
The real source of the problem is the Ivy League. It is understandable not to start football until the 3rd Saturday in Sept for freshman students welfare and the fact Ivy's don't participate in playoffs. The hockey programs in the Ivy League are very much penalized even in their own league nevermind nationally by this ridiculous game limit. This really needs to be changed. A compromise of 32 gby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: 2016-17 Schedule - 7 years ago
Cornell signed a contract that they would play Merrimack twice after Merrimack played twice in Ithaca last year. With a 29 game limit and having Miami in Ithaca in December there was no option to pick up another game in New England in October. With the Florida trip and MSG annual game, there is just nothing that could be done. Breaking a contract with Merrimack would be wrong in many ways and fuby wakester2468 - Hockey
Re: 2016-17 Schedule - 7 years ago
Actually that's not exactly the case. Cornell will also visit Merrimack on Friday Oct 28th for a single game alone with returning on Jan 7th for another single game. Very strange.by wakester2468 - Hockey
