Trotsky George64Academic freedom has its limits.No. It doesn't. You can be disgusted by his remarks; I am. You may demand he modify what appears to be support for the murder of innocents*, which should be grounds for dismissal as it is not covered by freedom of expression. But academic freedom is sacred. Ken711 wolcoma Cornell football just did not come to play today. A very winnable game and we still lose. Like I said Cornell does not make it easy to be an alum. My biggest frustration with Big Red football is nobody cares about the program, which is too bad. I am watching the game on TV and they kept showing our lovely parking garage. Well at least Harvard academics have no problem fieldinby George64 - Other Sports

Local Motion I think they should play the Empire Cup (Cornell vs. Columbia) game in New York City every year, last game of the season similar to the old Cornell vs. Penn game in Philly over Thanksgiving. But host it the weekend before Thanksgiving as they do now, as doing it on Turkey Day makes it complicated for many families. When they play the game in Ithaca the weather is usually cold andby George64 - Other Sports
Re: Claudia Goldin '67 wins Nobel Prize for economics - 6 months ago
David Harding Good alumni news Cornell Chronicle Claudia Goldin ’67, who dreamt of becoming an archaeologist or a microbiologist until she took an economics course at Cornell, won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics for her study of women’s progress in the workforce. Yeah, but our football team continues to lose and our athletic facilities are subpar. Priorities!by George64 - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Cornell in the Movies - 6 months ago
The book, Boys in the Boat, was great, the documentary was great, the movie should be terrific, too. As I recall, Cornell was prominently mentioned in the book, so we should get a mention in the movie.by George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

dbilmes This was interesting to read about. It's a great underdog story! Long gone are the days of Sports Illustrated writing stories about collegiate rowing, and CBS news mentiøning it. The Boys in the Boat was a wonderful book about the 1936 Washington crew which won the gold at the Berlin Olympics. In those days, rowing was one of the major spectator sports in the county, with special trains bby George64 - Other Sports

Chris '03 Weder jtwcornell91 Has anybody without cable tried to watch Cornell football on ESPN+? I tried and it told me to go to espn.com/activate to log in with my cable provider. I think I was already logged in to my ESPN account on the Roku (I have the soon-to-be-expensive Disney+ bundle), since I was able to watch cricket highlights afterwards. Al DeFlorio jtwcornell91 Trotsky Even as a rabid hockey fan I gotta ask: why should athletics be a priority? If it's a net revenue generator then, fine, use it as an engine to fund legitimate academic pursuits. But if it loses money... fuck it. It's a bauble for a minority of students, usually quite wealthy students, who often don't belong on campus anyway. I'd go a little beyond money-makinby George64 - Other Sports

Jeff Hopkins '82 Chris '03 Trotsky You're gonna make me hope. I had accepted that Huggy Bear was as irreparable a part of the Creeping Meatballism of the last 70 years of Cornell's aestethic and spiritual cratering as the death of the elms. Chris '03 Trotsky That is fucking awesome. After 40 years, Cornell appears to have gotten somebody to do their comms who is under the age of 87. Now please, murder #yellcornell in its sleep and bury it in a shallow grave in Mecklenburg. It feels so there's been a tone shift this year from athletics. First full year from Nicki Moore. randyranger I was told (many people talked about it) that in the previous year's V vs F game (October,1967) that Kevin scored a hat trick against Ken Dryden...the ONLY player to do so in Dryden's 4 years at Cornell. Quite a factoid. As pointed out by a friend, including citation, apparently not true. See Cornell University Hockey by Adam Woden, with research by Arthur Mintz (Arcadia Publishiby George64 - Hockey

randyranger I've been following Elynah for many years but this is the first I felt I HAD to post. I arrived at Cornell as a freshman in September, 1968 and became one of the student hockey managers, working mostly with the freshmen (Larry Fullan, Jim Higgs, Dave Westner, Craig Brush et al). chimpfood I was at schoellkopf today and the steps and structure of the stadium is literally falling apart all over the place and the turf is pretty terrible at this point. George64 Movie to be released in July, Oppenheimer, “The epic thriller chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the enigmatic American scientist who ran the Manhattan Project — which led to the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II.“ As Hans Bethe, Richard Feynman and Paul Olum (had a class with him, BTW) all worked on the Manhattan Project, I think Cornell may get a mention.
