[OT] George Dentes - 17 years ago
So, I have this in the other sports thread because George Dentes was on the Sprint Football, normal Football and baseball teams in his time on the hill and his two sons are current members of the sprint football team. Dentes was Tompkins County DA from 1989-2005, so many of the people on this list may have known him in one capacity or another (hopefully not as defendants...). His suddeby CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Women's Volleyball - Come This Weekend- Still rolling - 17 years ago
And rolling...beat Yale last night (lost the first, won the next three). My older daughter was ecstatic (she's 5) because #16 (Kathryn Woodbury) not only threw her a souvenir mini-volleyball before the game, but very graciously signed her program after the game. Volleyball is nice to take little kids to because 1) the game is fast, with no long, boring intermissions for ice resurfacing (tby CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Cornell's mediocre new opponents - good for hockey? - 17 years ago
Regarding our weak OOC schedule, and mirroring sentiments elsewhere in this thread: Ithaca Journal (Schafer)“You have a responsibility to the college game in general,” Schafer said. “You have a responsibility to play against the Robert Morris' and the RIT's. They need someone to play against to legitimitize their program. They are good opponents. You have to put a blend together.” Edit: inaby CKinsland - Hockey

BeeeejSounds kind of like the libero is supposed to ensure fewer team members get injured by enduring all the injuries herself. Naah. In my experience, the person flailing around on the floor, diving, rolling, etc. very rarely gets hurt (though that is how I dislocated my shoulder...how many times in my life had I made exactly the same diving roll with no problem?). Re: Section O - 17 years ago
Our season tickets are in H. We had comp tickets directly behind and to the side of us in the past. This was nice because we got to sit "with" a buch of CU player parents/sisters/brothers/whatnot (Charlie Cook's sister was one of the most intense hockey watchers I've ever seen). We also got to sit "with" a bunch of opposing school family members (had some lovely conversatioby CKinsland - Hockey

Women's VB beat the Cuse (3-0 by scores of 30-14, 30-17, 30-26)...first time they've beaten them since 1987. Cornell's Elizabeth Bishop isn't really big, but man can she pound the ball. Excellent court sense. CKby CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Women's Volleyball - Come This Weekend - 17 years ago
So, it seems most of the changes were adopted back in 2000-2002 or so, but I haven't really been paying attention. They've gone to all rally scoring (which used to be used in tournaments sometimes, but wasn't generally the rule). There seem to be some changes related to crossing the plane of the net to play a ball, there seem to be some changes related to back row hitters (at least it looks difby CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Women's Volleyball - Come This Weekend - 17 years ago
All this aside, I'll second the "come to the game" plea. It's a different atmosphere than hockey (you can, for example, breath once seated, and walk around, and turn, etc....the games aren't...um...packed, to say the least). However, the game is fast paced and exciting. There have been a ton of rule changes since I played in the mid-90's, some of which really make the game more enterby CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Cornell 11 York 1 - 17 years ago
It seemed like there were a heck of a lot of penalties. Showing off my lack of hockey stat finding ability, I'm going to ask: How many minutes of this game were played 5x5? Jeez, special teams got a massive workout. It was kind of like the red white game (5x4s, 5x3s, 4x3, even, as noted earlier, a bit of 6x3, which is rather rare). Lots and lots of non-5x5 and loads of 3 man penalty kill.by CKinsland - Hockey
Re: New Forum Design - 17 years ago
Well, I mostly like it and I do find it easier on the eyes (once I got over the initial shock). The one thing that I miss, as a threaded view reader, is the stationary "next message" link. On the old one, I could just keep bopping the button on my laptop as I read messages (if I didn't accidentally move the cursor). On this one, the only "next message" link floats at thby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: Sea of Red/White Out? - 17 years ago
The first is getting the word out, especially to all the students. People don't necessarily read articles in the Daily Sun, and since a lot of people sell season (or game) tickets to other people, any email list is incomplete. The other problem is getting people to care enough to do it. And the third problem is that most people (well most townies) are wearing their winter coats (which come inby CKinsland - Hockey

There is a "National Punctuation Day" And, for the unaware, there is a song about the poor, misused apostrophe (lyrics at: ). Anybody really interested can get the mp3 from me (I don't expect too many takers on this one). Ckby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: Lynah Rink Renovation Blog - 17 years ago
Since they don't let people go down the stairs during play, does it mean that people will have to wait outside the doors until a break in play? If so, a lot of people are going to miss a lot of hockey (or learn to be punctual). I certainly hope they will continue to keep people out. If this has a marginal effect on punctuality then great! If not, then it serves those people right. My questionby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: Lynah Rink Renovation Blog - 17 years ago
I poked my head in between games of the volleyball match yesterday (Cornell over Columbia, 3-0, pretty easily, BTW). I like way they've moved the concourse outside the arena and they've tucked the extra seats in very nicely. It will quench the ability of people to hang on the concourse watching the game when they are late (or late back after intermission). Since they don't let people go doby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: price of tickets keep going up !!!!! - 17 years ago
Our neighbor (season tickets near us) and her young daughter (7 years old) were verbally abused (cursed at, threatened, etc.) at the away Colgate game. I doubt that they did anything to provoke it if their behavior there was anything like their behavior at home. OTOH, the Clarkson parents that have been in the comp seats behind us on and off over the last few seasons have been invariably polite.by CKinsland - Hockey
Alumni Game - 17 years ago
Well, I'm just shocked that nobody else wrote in about the alumni game last night at the Rink in Lansing. Free admission, skeleton pep band (though plenty for the space). Really, lots of fun. Attendance was decent (a hundred people, maybe). Of course, I'm about the worst person to give any details, since I don't recognize players without their uniforms on (preferably with names on the backby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: Alumni in the Pros JULY '06 - 17 years ago
My niece (11 months in December) is too young. My sister-in-law says she has to be at ~ 2 years old before I can take her to a game. Hmmm. Dunno. In my experience, kids are easiest to bring to game from age 0-2 then again from age 6 (if interested in hockey, 8 if not) up. Both my kids came to games from shortly after birth until they were just shy of two. Now they stay with grandma for thby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: It depends on the meaning of do..... - 18 years ago
I believe I recall seeing him at one game last year...kind of cruising around the top and coming down the aisles (townie side) to cruise the glass and shake hands with little kids (most of whom, of course, screamed and cried because they were too little and their parents wanted to force them to be by the bear for a picture...but that's a rant I shouldn't start). Of course, I could be wrong.by CKinsland - Other Sports
Syr/Harv Lax - 18 years ago
Bucktooth (Syr) with a HatTrick with 8:04 to go in first...3-0 Syr Not looking good for Harvard Should I be rooting for Harvard because they are Ivy? Or the Orange because they are close? Well, I don't really care one way or the other, but a Hat Trick that early in a game is a pretty remarkable feat. Now 4-0 Syr 6:12 to go in first.by CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Section C Diaspora - 18 years ago
It doesn't matter. Students or whatever can put their names on the list. You just need contact information (and keep it updated, since, as has become clear, it may be sometime between signing up and getting called). I put my name on the list for the tickets I now have while I was a still a graduate student. Luckily, this was in the first year of the current coaching era and I got ticketsby CKinsland - Hockey
Re: Section C Diaspora - 18 years ago
To get non-student season tickets, you call (email, stop by, whatever) the tickets office and add your name to the waiting list. Yes, the waiting list is long. I'm unsure what the new seating will do to the waiting list length. We have two season tickets (that we have had for several years) but we have been on the list for two more (for the kids) for 4 years. I checked my location on theby CKinsland - Hockey
Journal Article 04-15-06 - 18 years ago
Nice article in today's Ithaca Journal. They say the rink renovation is ahead of schedule (miracle of miracles...well, I'll be impressed if it finishes ahead of schedule, or even on schedule). Well, poop, I can't find the link on the Journal website. Schafer Quotes: "That (Wisconsin) loss has hurt more...than any other game that I can remember in a long, long time. Our Elite College Athletes Being Good - 18 years ago
Nice to see the guys reaching out to the community. Also, the Cornell Men's lacrosse team has been going out and reading to local middle and elementary schools (my preK daughter filled me in on the details after some of them read to her class). So much nicer than going to parties with drinking and strippers... CKby CKinsland - Hockey

Imagine how the parents are feeling...you go from being so proud of your son. "Yes, Robert is doing well. He's on the lacrosse team at Duke. Thanks for asking". To having your son be part of a team that is making the news in an absolutely awful way. Must be awkward around the watercooler.by CKinsland - Other Sports
Re: Alumni in the Pros - April 2006 - 18 years ago
Well, this thread got me thinking about my other hockey viewing opportunities...namely a way to avoid spending time with my inlaws when next we go to Louisiana to visit. Since the Louisiana Icegators have ceased to be, I'm planning to coordinate the obligatory inlaw trip to catch a Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs game next fall. Luckily, both Shane Palahicky and Jeremy Downs play for the Mudbugsby CKinsland - Hockey
