Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
I wonder if prospective recruits are aware of the style of hockey - "system", if you will, they would have to adapt to in order to play for colleges which attempt to recruit them?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Poll: Rooting for Harvard? - 7 years ago
Denver U. is a small school (11,797), but U.M.D. is even smaller (10,878). For a really small school root for Union (2,242), which has to compete against Penn State (99,133).by Hooking - Hockey
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
GREAT game! Speed, heavy checking, great goaltending, and no trapping.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Poll: Rooting for Harvard? - 7 years ago
There is a difference between "rooting for Harvard" and "rooting for the Harvard Hockey Team". Rhetoricians call this a "synecdoche" - where the user confuses the part for the whole. This is a serious error in logic, love, and hockey fans.by Hooking - Hockey

Trotsky: If you find a video of that game I'll split the cost of a copy with you.by Hooking - Hockey

Re: Next Year's predictions/Expectations 2017-18 - 7 years ago
How the mighty have fallen. From statistical analysis to predictions/Expectations! Of course there could be a lot of overlap here. There certainly is in reports by stock-market/investment touts.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
Have rules changes/interpretation in the last decade or so influenced what style of play in college hockey is more successful? For example, is the defensive "trap" strategy less or more successful? Has the relative success of speed versus strength changed? Have recruiting priorities changed, and if so how?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
Talent alone does not produce winners. Attitude, coaching, strategy, teamwork and even fan support play large roles in determining a team's success. And the latter qualities, like recruiting, are variables which may be influenced by deliberate change.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
But is Donato any good at playing a trap defense?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: cu- lowell - 7 years ago
". . . sturdy defensively, but everything else is up in the air." - That comment is annoyingly accurate and familiar. Still, following this year's Big Red team was immensely more enjoyable this year than last year. A similar improvement next year would brig joy to the faithful, more fans to Lynah, and more prospects to Ithaca. Hope springs eternal . . .by Hooking - Hockey
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
Last night the four playoff teams had a total of 29 power plays but scored a total of TWO power play goals - a less than 7% success ratio. This seems low. How does it compare to regular season power-play success results?by Hooking - Hockey

Who are you going to believe, a cluster of effete statisticians or a seasoned Cornell Hockey Fan?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: NCAA tourney - 7 years ago
Percentage posters hedge their bets, while zealots are certain where certainty does not exist. Cornell wins, 3-1.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Opponents News - 7 years ago
It is possible to take even the best of intentions too far, even awards for excellence and community pride. Expressions of the worst of intentions are becoming increasingly common and increasingly tedious.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Cornell will crush Harvard if and when Harvard wins enough games to face the Big Red. That's how I figure it, and how Cornell skaters figure it. Damn the fee-splitters! Full speed ahead!by Hooking - Hockey

Statistically, how much tougher an opponent is UML than WMU?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Teams come and teams go, but Dartmouth faithfully reminds us that winning is the product of something more than personnel and statistics. The Big Green is doing us a favor if we would pay attention.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: no school for 2 days - 7 years ago
Students, faculty, even ordinary Americans used to walk more than two blocks a day - for transportation, not to look good. Plowing parking lots requires a whole lot more time, labor, space, and money than plowing sidewalks.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson @ Cornell 03/10-3/12?/17 - 7 years ago
Always lots of credit or blame ascribed to goalkeepers, offensive units, defensive units, individual players, even FANS (?!)- but NEVER a mention of good or bad coaching or game plans. Coaches do make a difference. I'll bet statistics prove this.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson @ Cornell 03/10-3/12?/17 - 7 years ago
Chasing the puck is more tiring than passing the puck. On the bright side, chasing the puck is fine conditioning for both your defensive and offensive players. After the Clarkson series Cornell skaters should be in magnificent skating condition.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson @ Cornell 03/10-3/12?/17 - 7 years ago
No matter how we got here this season is a whole LOT more enjoyable than last season. Now, if Cornell can improve as much again next year . . .by Hooking - Hockey
Re: purchasing Lake Placid tickets - 7 years ago
I envy you guys. If I could be there I would simply root for the Big Red, not parse the chances of them advancing if they loose.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Cornell apparently has been slow to react to the forechecks some teams have used against them. I hope this is the case rather than a lack of talent which limited them to three shots in two periods of hockey Friday. It's easier to change your clear and your attack than it is to change your personnel.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson @ Cornell 03/10-3/12?/17 - 7 years ago
Let's hope there will be a good crowd for game three, even though that is statistically improbable.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson @ Cornell 03/10-3/12?/17 - 7 years ago
Apparently Coach Casey Jones had a game plan which neutralized Cornell's offense in the first period, then changed and neutered Cornell's offense again in the third period. There is only a .000000356 probability that all of Cornell's players individually and simultaneously had a random bad game in the first period, recovered in the second period, and then all individually suffered a relapse in thby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Sound advice, Ken. I will read comments about Cornell Ice Hockey and try to ignore statistical speculation, no matter how annoying it might be.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Thanks. Those statistics explain why we lost to the Susquehanna Club Team and we didn't make it to the NCAA finals. Wait! the statistical fact that the '58 Cornell hockey team was not in Division I means there was a 100% chance Cornell could not win the NCAA D-1 championship - just as certain as the statistical fact that if today's Cornell team doesn't keep winning they won't be 2017 D-1 NCAA menby Hooking - Hockey
