Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Recruits 2016 and Beyond - 7 years ago
No doubt Cornell's hockey game has changed. College and professional hockey have changed over the years: more skating and less grabbing. Now, if the excuses would change . . .by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Recruits 2016 and Beyond - 7 years ago
Fans attend hockey games because they are entertaining, regardless of starting time, ticket lines, seat design or other excuses. Top recruits sign up where their talents will be showcased and developed, and where they will enjoy competing. Declining attendance and lost recruits are telling us something. If you defend the team's style of play it's you, not me, who singled out the hockey program'sby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Recruits 2016 and Beyond - 7 years ago
Do you suppose recruits can access and actually watch videos of current games played by schools they consider applying to? That could affect Cornell's recruiting success, depending upon the style of play the prospect prefers. I doubt they worry much about refereeing, fish, or unlucky bounces.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Sc Johnson $150 million gift - 7 years ago
lucky bounces, fish, exams, travel, injury, hostile referees, bad ice, small crowds, late starting time, ugly uniforms, warm rinks, cheap sticks, hot pucks, illness, bad goals, hot goalies, noise distractions, prejudiced timekeepers, low barometric pressure - did I miss any?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Sc Johnson $150 million gift - 7 years ago
While we are at it let's stop blaming game starting times, ticket lines, ticket prices, traveling, bad bounces, officiating, seating arrangements, exams, bad ice, and league expansion for the shortcomings of C.U. hockey teams and the demise of C.U. hockey attendance. BTW: The same teams that Cornell plays today and the teams that go to the frozen four today are pretty much the same teams that Corby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Sc Johnson $150 million gift - 7 years ago
In the seven years from 1967 to 1973 the C.U. men's hockey team went to six frozen fours. In the following 42 years Cornell went to two frozen fours. It is remarkable the fan base has survived as well as it has.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Sc Johnson $150 million gift - 7 years ago
In the late-50's early 60's the crowds grew rapidly, even back when Paul Patton was coach. Then the team's success was growing. I think the current spectator drought is a result of team performance, not seating arrangements.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Hahvahd @ Cornell 01/27/17 - 7 years ago
Still curious. Did the Cornell defense collapse on the net in the third period? Those deflections are often symptomatic.by Hooking - Hockey

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. Eisenhower = Trump!by Hooking - Hockey

Was it depth or conditioning that ruined the evening?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Hahvahd @ Cornell 01/27/17 - 7 years ago
Moving from Albany to Binghamton involves moving from a big city with a steady influx of money (taxes) to a relatively small city which is increasingly depressed economically. Hockey attendance isn't particularly dependent upon city size or wealth. Consider Flin Flon.by Hooking - Hockey

I tried and tried, but they all rushed off to study when I began to eat.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: St. Lawrence 2 vs. Cornell 3 1/21/17 - 7 years ago
Hopefully a Cornell student is more easily educated than a leopard or a bear. Channeling aggression into performance is a prerequisite for top athletes and top teams.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: St. Lawrence 2 vs. Cornell 3 1/21/17 - 7 years ago
My comments about lack of discipline were general in nature. Nobody likes their team to take foolish penalties. I accuse no particular individuals and still maintain that the ability to maintain focus under pressure is a valuable life skill and the best coaches of all athletic endeavors excel at instilling it. Obviously some Cornell hockey fans are pretty touchy on the subject of team discipline,by Hooking - Hockey
Re: St. Lawrence 2 vs. Cornell 3 1/21/17 - 7 years ago
I doubt many serious sports fans would disagree in general with the statement "Unforced penalties are a sign of poor discipline." Probably the greatest benefit realized by competitive athletes is how to keep focused in times of stress, and the finest coaches surely are the best at instilling this virtue.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: The Next Two Weekends - 7 years ago
The best news is averaging nearly three goals a game, spread out among players. Defense is essential to winning, but teams averaging fewer than two goals per game, no matter how well they defend, seldom go far in the playoffs.by Hooking - Hockey

Unforced penalties are a symptom of poor discipline.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson vs. Cornell 1/20/17 - 7 years ago
Have you not noticed references to bad breaks, bad luck, road trips, etc. on this site to explain some close ones (losses)? I did not make these excuses but I surely read them. Is there some unwritten rule against hypothesizing about changes in play and strategy? I watched Cornell play a lot of "dump and run" hockey in the 60's. I watched them win a lot of games too.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson vs. Cornell 1/20/17 - 7 years ago
Ever notice that the attitude of a team is reflected in the attitude of its fans? This same phenomenon is found in the attitude of holders of public office and attitude of their fans.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Clarkson vs. Cornell 1/20/17 - 7 years ago
Weak teams talk about bad hops and bad luck. Strong teams talk about effort and game plans.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: 1967 CELEBRATION - 7 years ago
Maryland lacrosse is entirely composed of parvenus. Lacrosse is an Iroquois game, and the Iroquois Confederation centers in what is now upstate New York. Tidewater johnny-come-latelys bragging about their lacrosse history should drink ink.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: 1967 CELEBRATION - 7 years ago
Harkness coached Cornell Men's Lacrosse for three years. His record was 35 wins, one loss.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: 1967 CELEBRATION - 7 years ago
Yep, Harkness. Compare the W-L record of the Cornell Men's Lacrosse Team the first year he coached it versus the team record the previous year. Pretty much the same players, but NOT the same team.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: 1967 CELEBRATION - 7 years ago
The 1967 National Championship came just 10 years after the sport of ice hockey came to Cornell (Lynah rink opened). After the '67 Championship Team Cornell appeared in six of the next seven frozen fours. My how times have changed.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Annual Home Stretch Contest: 2017 Edition - 7 years ago
I predict that Cornell will score an average of fewer than two goals a game down the homestretch, and the opposition will score an average of more than three goals per game. This prediction eliminates the "good luck" - "bad luck" analysis of these games.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Cornell 1 vs. Merrimack 0 1/7/17 - 7 years ago
Odds are Cornell will have to score more than one goal per game to win a majority of remaining games, no matter how well the team plays defense.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Florida College Classic - 7 years ago
On the positive side, the warm weather, the long commute to Estero, and the holiday season provide three convenient variables to explain team performance. See above.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Florida College Classic - 7 years ago
There is a reason why teams don't "show up" for some games or at some times of the year. I suspect Cornell hockey fans are becoming more complacent than the players, and every effect has its cause.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Florida College Classic - 7 years ago
Cornell has played consistently over the past few years. The performance of this year's team resembles that of last year's team, right through the Estero Tournament. Complacency sucks.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Giles Threadgold Dies - 7 years ago
Giles in the stripes, Jimmie on the Zamboni, Lou Mobbs running the rink, Ned on the bench, and a RED hot team. Glory days.by Hooking - Hockey
