Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
No offense to hotel school majors. The captain of the first Cornell Men's Hockey Team to play in Lynah, Roger ("the beast" Eastman, was a hotel major. Sorry, I don't have the statistics on Roger.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
If you can't or refuse to quantify key variables you have no business making statistical predictions, particularly predictions expressed in fractions of a percent. Are all you statistical savants hotel administration majors?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Do statistical probabilities factor in variables such as player conditioning, team discipline on and off the ice, desire, dedication, coaching skills, game plans and adaptability - interesting stuff like that? I hope so.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Recruits 2016 and Beyond - 7 years ago
Some new coaches, particularly coaches of teams new to D-1 hockey, sign swarms of top-shelf recruits. Gadowsky is a recent example. Cornell once had such a coach. Is this mainly because school administrations accommodate a wider academic range of applicants or is it mostly the new coach's magnetic personality?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Hockey is played on the ice, not on computers, which is a stretch for a growing number of fans. So far neither the ECAC nor the NCAA has prevented a winning team from winning a championship. It is imperative for a championship team to believe in its own abilities not just to win but to beat everyone, regardless of statistics, until a loss prevents it. It would help if fans shared such a convictioby Hooking - Hockey

#16 Badger coach Tony Granato after last night's upset of #11 Penn State: ". . . we haven't focused on what everyone else is doing. Our whole focus has been trying to get better each weekend and face each challenge and not worry about what else is going on." That and, of course, continuing to believe "We are going to wind the championship." I hope Cornell Coach and players subby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Rankings - 7 years ago
Yep. All they have to do is win out and past statistics be damned. I have a tough time applying the statistical strategies of well-paid advisors in a net-zero market to my love of Cornell Hockey.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
"Snide?" To paraphrase Jack Nicholson "You can't handle snide." A great gap remains between the expectations of two different groups of Cornell fans, or perhaps "followers" is a more accurate descriptor for one group.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
Mea culpa. I assume "when Cornell wins and the season's over" it's over for EVERY D1 college hockey team. I keep forgetting the prevailing mood of number crunchers.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
I like the part of the playoffs when a win gives Cornell a 100% chance of advancement. I best like the part of the playoffs where a Cornell win means the season's over.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Union @ Cornell 02/25/17 - 7 years ago
Implicit in my reference to Johnny's Big Red Grille was the assumption that the use of that bear logo on the Dryden Road sign was a casual affair back in the day - but times change?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
I love it when Cornell wins. I don't give a rat's ass whether possible future opponents win or lose, until they play Cornell. Except for Harvard.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Union @ Cornell 02/26/17 - 7 years ago
I think Johnny Petrilose still holds the rights to the bear logo above.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Clarkson 2017-02-18 - 7 years ago
Finally some consensus. No one is obliged to respond to upsetting questions, but the volunteer consensus is, "It is folly to seek or worse, hypothesize the cause of erratic athletic performance .by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Clarkson 2017-02-18 - 7 years ago
I still do not understand why the Cornell defense prevailed against a superior team and allegedly broke down against a considerably weaker team 24 hours later? I also read here that the Cornell offense was unable to cope with the Yale forecheck and was unable to deal with a similar Clarkson forecheck. If accurate, these reports indicate organizational rather than individual problems.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Clarkson 2017-02-18 - 7 years ago
I was not able to see this game and the comments on the game do not give a clear picture of why Cornell did not defeat Clarkson when they defeated a ranked opponent the previous night? All the numbers and statistics indicate Clarkson should not have been so even a match. Did any one problem stand out, such as defensive strategy, offensive strategy, short depth, or conditioning? It's not possibleby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Rankings - 7 years ago
I apologize for my apparently disturbing statement about "the luck of the draw". I wished to suggest that Cornell's playoff hopes truly ARE in the team's hands and it's best for the players and probably fans to concentrate on winning the remaining games, one at a time, rather than become distracted by teams Cornell won't even play again in the regular season - statistical analyses not wby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Rankings - 7 years ago
Speculation about the outcome of games in which other teams play other teams apparently assumes Cornell's playoff future is out of their hands. I hope this is not the case. I trust winning their remaining games will insure them success and there is no reason to praise or blame the luck of the draw.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
Marty: If you would rather dis me rather than the enjoyment and success of Cornell Hockey and the reasons for its successes (vs. excuses for its failures) you could establish a new website.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
Your point is well taken. My perception of Cornell hockey is also more influenced by year-old memories than half-century old memories. The cause of this recent collapse (and all failures) interests me more than attempts to rationalize it.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
The March 1967 NCAA semi-final game between Cornell and North Dakota was one of the finest hockey games I have ever seen and matched two teams of unquestioned excellence. Belittling past excellence in any enterprise because it happened long ago is silly. If time passed negates excellence then L. Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth" is a more excellent dramatic presentation than Shakespearby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
". . . only a few teams were competitive during that period" - cited twice above. When you have an excellent team this statement is absolutely true because you have an excellent team, but tautologies prove nothing. Cornell faces an abundance of competitive teams now, especially Dartmouth in Lynah. On the bright side the Red has recently pulled it together against some competitive teamsby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
There was a time when sarcasm was appreciated. You see, posters on this site disparaged Dryden and Cornell teams of his era because they supposedly played at a time when excellence in hockey was easier to achieve. My sarcastic question was meant to point out that excellence in the NHL at that time must also have been easier to achieve since Dryden blew away competition in his rookie-minus-one yeaby Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
Still waiting for my hockey trivia question answer.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
In the past 20 years Cornell won 3 ECAC men's ice hockey championships. In the previous 30 years Cornell won 9 ECAC men's ice hockey championships. If you are content with these numbers good for you, but please don't defend your satisfaction with references to league change, bad hops, and all that malarky, just enjoy the status quo.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
How long? Ever since I decided to stop making excuses and instead look for improvement. Blaming the refereeing, the ice condition, the travel, the crowd, the bad breaks - none of these ever improved a team.by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Achievements - 7 years ago
More equivocation: "The league was easier then blah blah blah . . . " Dryden has the best numbers of any goalie in the NHL - ever. Maybe the world's greatest hockey trivia question: Who was Stanley Cup MVP (Conn-Smythe Trophy) the year BEFORE he was NHL Rookie of the Year (Calder Memorial Trophy)?by Hooking - Hockey
Re: Colgate @ Cornell 02/07/17 - 7 years ago
How does Cornell's Home vs. Away record compare to, say, the D-I average, or the average of top 20 D-I hockey teams? Tough question, but with nearly everyone crunching nearly every conceivable group of numbers relating to nearly every conceivable human endeavor an answer(s) may be forthcoming and they would be interesting - to me, at least.by Hooking - Hockey
