Re: Cornell 3 UAH 1 - 13 years ago
It's like clockwork, the defensiveness vis a vis Schafer on this board. He's clearly had success as a coach here; no one would suggest otherwise. I for one hope he sticks around a good long while, even if I don't love his brand of hockey. He graduates players who are solid in the fundamentals of the game, and that's no small thing. But surely we can allow honest criticism when that's called forby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Graduation Day Reflections - 13 years ago
Huge thanks to Mitch and Elie for your terrific columns in the Sun--and your massive contributions to this board. Not the least of your contributions has been your willingness to make tough judgments and ask challenging questions when need be, while always embracing, as Elie puts it, "the magic of Cornell hockey." All the best to you both. Stay in touch.by HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: UHN Pregame Thread (RIT and Denver too) - 14 years ago
Tom Lento No no no no no. A thousand times no. Everything you claim the "coaches don't say" is flat wrong. It's a system that depends on footwork, positioning, beating the other team to the puck, and maintaining possession in the offensive zone. If you fail to maintain possession in the offensive zone, you have superior defensive zone play and excellent goaltending to fall back on,by HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: UHN Pregame Thread (RIT and Denver too) - 14 years ago
As we all know, and as the three Red coaches note proudly in interviews every chance they get, the Schafer system begins and ends with defense. The mantra: take care of things in your own zone and good things will follow at the other end. That’s fine, and indeed unassailable on some level. But what the coaches don't say is that it’s a system that depends on superior goaltending, and on eking outby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Cornell-BU @ MSG postgame - 14 years ago
redice I'm a great admirer of Mike & the job that his coaching staff does at CU. But, I feel strongly that he cost his team a victory by going into a defensive shell for the whole third period. I spotted it in the first two minutes. And, the shell lasted until the end of the period. Granted, there were penalties to kill. But,at even strength, there seemed no urgency to forecheck.by HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Quinnipiac 3 at Cornell 2 postgame - 14 years ago
CUontheslopes The Greening penalty was legitimate. It could've been called as a 2 min minor, but I didn't have a problem with the call. It was a LOUD, hard hit and the QU player sold the call well. A lot of the other calls, however, I thought were very questionable at best. We seem to have this problem against smaller teams all the time. They seem to get away with lots of clutching, grabbing anby HockeyMan - Hockey

Jim Hyla ebilmes Not to focus on B.Nash again,... Then why are you?Yeah he screwed up. But you're, meaning all the B. Nash critics not just you, a lot harder on him than others on the team. I wasn't able to see Greening's penalty, but he does have a history of some dumb penalties, remember last year. If that penalty was for real, it had a much greater impact than anything B. Nash did. nr53 There's a thread over on the hockeysfuture.com board about Lindstrom saying that Murray should be invited to play on the Swedish Olympics team. Seems like fairly good praise though I haven't read the article they reference since I don't read Swedish... The article says that Lidstrom wants Murray on the team for his hard-nosed, physical play, which, Lidstrom stresses, is especially valuby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 at Yale 3+ENG (postgame) - 14 years ago
billhoward Our 4-2 loss at Yale (including the ENG) was a game either team could have won. It's not frustrating like last year against Yale, where you didn't have as much hope the next encounter would turn out in Cornell's favor. This time, you've got to like Cornell's chances in a rematch. We've got to solve the little defensive miscues such as giving up the home run pass and maybe have Scrivensby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Harvard at Cornell postgame - 14 years ago
ebilmes Cornell is 6x10 on the PP in two ECAC games. I agree that Cornell probably would have been assessed a penalty for the fish if BNash hadn't already been in the box. What helped us was probably that the refs didn't issue a formal warning (at least one that was announced) until the 3rd period. If that warning had been issued in the 2nd, they would have had to issue another penalty in theby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
RichH But what I'm making fun of here, is when people cross over to talk about "intangibles." I don't care what you call it: Heart, Intensity, Focus, Fortitude, Determination, Disinterest, whatever. These are all intangibles. They can't be measured or proven. It's my opinion that they are made-up quantities based on your own emotional opinions of a guy. This is ridiculous. "by HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
Josh '99 Agreed. Nobody gets to this level without being tremendously motivated and working extremely hard. Huh? All kinds of players get to this level without working quite as hard all the time as their peers. Is there a more oft-stated line by a coach than "So and so is maybe the hardest worker on this team," or "He's very talented but he sometimes he doesn't give it his aby HockeyMan - Hockey

RichH CUontheslopes He continues to look disinterested I swear I simply do not understand this repeated criticism of B. Nash. As in...what does that even mean? Is he yawning? Is he staring into the crowd during play? Is he checking his facebook during faceoffs? The rest of your criticisms of him are totally valid. This isn't. Players carry themselves differently on the ice. Some are fraby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
Jim Hyla I still disagree with those who criticize B. Nash. Yes he makes mistakes, but I'd put him out in any situation. I wonder how much time he'll log this year? CUontheslopes I actually was thinking that when I wrote the comment on the 2 people watching, but it's very true. I still have to disagree on B. Nash - he folds like a cheap suit in big spots. He's serviceable regularly andby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
CUontheslopes On the whole, I thought CU looked a lot better for this point in the year than other years. Riley Nash made more great passes in one night than I've seen in a long time. He constantly finds the open man and his passes are not just the standard around the perimeter passes. He's putting the puck through the interior of the defense and finding open guys. They really need to finish beby HockeyMan - Hockey

Re: Cornell-Bemidji NCAA regionals postgame - 15 years ago
TrotskyJacob '06Didn't he do an interview earlier this year where he essentially said he thinks his best shot is as a defensive 3rd line center in the NHL, so learning the defensive side of the game is a good thing? That would show a level of awareness and maturity that it often takes guys years to reach (c.f., Manderville, Kent) but if he does understand that then this is an ideal environmentby HockeyMan - Hockey

Re: I hate to say this, but... - 15 years ago
BCrespiHockeyMan No one is saying you need a run-and-gun style, but you do need some offensive flair. The game has changed, and you can no longer win merely by recruiting tree trunks and grinders. If Yale can build a team with considerable speed and skill, surely we can too. All season long, the lack of finishing was painful to observe. Re: Scrivens inability in big games - 15 years ago
CUontheslopesI have to agree. Scrivens just has not been good in big games. In fact, he hasn't been serviceable on many occasions. This season alone we had a number of big big games and he really let us down in many of them. Of course, he had some good games, but all of them seemed to come against lesser opponents. For example: BU@MSG - terrible North Dakota - absolutely awful Yale ECAC Finaby HockeyMan - Hockey
Re: I hate to say this, but... - 15 years ago
DisplacedCornellian I, too, think Schafer needs to stick/return to his style of big, punishing teams. Cornell is never going to be able to recruit enough quick, skilled players to play a run-and-gun style. With our reputation as a defense first team, the majority look elsewhere, and only a few fall in our lap. That reputation is not going to change in the near future. I think Schafer trieby HockeyMan - Hockey

Re: NC$$ games Friday 3/27/09 - 15 years ago
ugarteJim HylaActually I think he made the right play. The last thing you want with a couple of seconds left is a face off in your defensive zone. You want the clock to keep running. Your defense should be better able to tie up the puck behind the net, or fire it out of the zone, rather than give it up on a face off with a chance of a good shot oh goal. I seem to remember us having been ablby HockeyMan - Hockey
