Re: mascot head missing - 16 years ago
BeeeejI know this is completely beside the point and I'll catch heat for it, but an official representative of the Athletics Department should know how to write better than that. "...help in an issue that occurred"? "...in addition to several Cornell events of which it is very popular with small children"? "The incidence"?! Seriously?? I truly hope you regain full health and have a long, productive, and fulfilling life. I'm not sure why, but from your previous posts and because of the maturity of your writing, I would have guessed that you were in your 40s, not your 20s. It doesn't matter whether or not I agree with your take on our health-care system (I wouldn't dare offend the anti-political police on this board by offering mby BillCharlton - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: WOW. Active Hoops Discussion on here! - 16 years ago
RitaI didn't think it was worth a new thread, but according to ESPN's bracketology, Cornell is a #13 seed set up to play #4 Purdue. If that holds true, I have a feeling I won't be too popular in my Carnellian Red! I kind of liked it two years ago when the state of Indiana didn't have a single team in the NC$$ tournament. Better Purdue than Indiana. Indiana's colors are cream and crimson! Whaby BillCharlton - Other Sports

Here's one of the many puzzlers that keep me up at night: Would it be correct to call a brawl involving the UNH and Vermont men's hockey teams a catfight?by BillCharlton - Hockey

Josh '99No goalie fight? I'm not impressed. Though, to her credit, the goalie does sucker punch someone about 55 seconds into the video.by BillCharlton - Hockey
Re: Legacy situation - 16 years ago
RobbYes, probably as many as 50% of today's youth are no-good, lazy, video game playing, long hair growing, skateboarding, drinking and drugging burdens to society, but that's totally irrelevant when discussing Ivy admissions. Your sentence (with edits) accurately describes many members of my high school class and freshman dorm. Fortunately, most of them turned out OK. Re: Wrestling wins Ivies - 16 years ago
RichHSo what you're saying is that you think a 4-year undefeated streak having to constantly face some of the strongest competitors across the nation is more impressive (and improbable) than a single-game "any given night" one-and-done upset in a basketball tournament? No, I said it was far more improbable. The reason I used the Georgetown-Villanova comparison was that it is widely coby BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: The Rest of the ECAC Year, Updated 2/23 - 16 years ago
Al DeFlorioScersk '97We can also depend on the kindness of strangers: there is, in fact, a scenario where we lose both games and end up in fourth. Happened last year, but two years in a row would really be tempting the hockey gods. Unless the hockey gods favor Cornell over all others in the pantheon of truly deserving hockey teams.by BillCharlton - Hockey
Re: Legacy situation - 16 years ago
nyc94To add to what Robb said, Cornell has routinely putting out press releases about the record number of applications they have been receiving as have most of the Ivies. Whatever they are calling the current generation of high school kids - Gen Y, Boomer Echo, etc. - there are a heck of a lot more of them than there was in 1990 when I applied and I wonder if I would be accepted at Cornell now.by BillCharlton - John Spencer Is Dead

Al DeFlorioBillCharltonWrestling crushes Harvard 37 to 9 to clinch its sixth consecutive Ivy title. In the process, the team extended its Ivy dual meet winning streak to 33. Great job considering all the injuries. Agree 100%, but, to be fair, Harvard's team was decimated by injuries this year as well. Al, I didn't realize that Harvard was missing as many as eight of its top ten wrestlers. Thatby BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Game of the year in Cornell athletics - 16 years ago
It is interesting that Cornell and Brown finish the season against the same four teams: Brown Princeton (H) Penn (H) Harvard (A) Dartmouth (A) Cornell Dartmouth (H) Harvard (H) Penn (A) Princeton (A) I sure hope we seal the deal at home next weekend. I don't relish traveling to the Killer P's (even in their weakened state) needing a win to clinch. I also cringe at the thought ofby BillCharlton - Other Sports

In Kornheiser's defense, he made the big time as a Binghamton grad and had the good sense to send his daughter to Cornell! Plus, he often has a Cornell football helmet on his desk during PTI. Where else can you find that kind of free advertising? As for John Feinstein, I agree that he can be irritating in interviews, but he sure can write.by BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Recruiting and Financial Aid - CU lowest per capita Ivy endowment - 16 years ago
I used the most accurate 2007 data I could find to create the attached pdf file. It ranks the Ivy schools by endowment, number of students (undergrad and total), endowment dollars per student, student costs, and percentage of the endowment required annually to cover all student costs (that is, to provide a free ride for all students). Based on these data, it appears that the "poorer" scby BillCharlton - Hockey

If Paul and Huck get a few delegates, and McCain (lemme get my barf bag ready...) doesn't wrap up the nomination this week, there's a chance for a very ugly GOP convention. Re: USCHO - 16 years ago
LaJollaRedAlso, I think that website does a poor job of updating stats, and an even poorer jobs providing game summaries. Is there someone who generally writes the Cornell game reports? I often feel like Lynah games never come with a recap. I read USCHO occasionally, but I always go to collegehockeystats.net to check stats and scores. This site has no advertising and loads quickly. Fantastic day for Cornell teams - 16 years ago
Wins on the same night by men's hockey, women's hockey, men's b-ball, and women's b-ball. When's the last time that happened? I'm far too lazy to research this. I give major props to women's b-ball and women's hockey for being competitive and being factors in their Ivy races.by BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Kevin Boothe at Super Bowl media day - 16 years ago
Are you saying that it's not 1983? You must be mistaken! On second thought, I haven't seen any Pat Benatar or Don Johnson lookalikes in years, so you must be right. I wonder, though, what happened to the last 25 years? Damn and yikes (I just noticed that I have gray hair )!by BillCharlton - Other Sports

Re: Cornell-Columbia game on YES tonight - 16 years ago
ugarteThe ESPN boxscore has C. Robinson playing one minute. Is there some unreported news about Robinson's return or is there a different C. Robinson? Must be a misprint. The Cornell Web site and CBS sportsline show Robinson with 0 minutes in the box score. He is not on the roster on the Cornell site, either.by BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Has this ever happened? - 16 years ago
Sadly, RPI would be better off if they could decline their opponents' penalties. Hockey fans usually rejoice when their team gets a PP chance. Not so this year at RPI. I imagine that their fans say, "Oh no, not again," whenever they go on a PP. I wonder if their players have the same feeling of impending doom?by BillCharlton - Hockey
Re: Dartmouth 5, UNH 3 - 16 years ago
TrotskyUNH had 29 SOG in the second period. Highest I've ever heard of. That come's out to almost 1.5 shots per minute! That's a fantastic rate. I've seen shot totals around 20 for a period, but never as high as 29. That equates to 87 shots for a whole game. I can remember a NY Ranger game with shots in the mid-50s, but there may be higher totals that I'm not aware of. I think the NHL record fby BillCharlton - Hockey

Re: Bad News for Basketball - 16 years ago
I just checked the Cornell athletics Web site. Collin Robinson's name is already gone from the roster. There was no mention of his departure in the game summary. I suppose we will learn more in the coming days. The team will miss Robinson's production. He was third on the team in minutes and scoring and second in assists. In tonight's game, Wittman, Dale, Gore, and Reeves played more minutes tby BillCharlton - Other Sports

He gave up one goal. He made some good saves. What else do you want him to do? Shut everyone out? Give the guy a break. Why be so negative when we win a game? Last time I checked, this is not the 2003 team.by BillCharlton - Hockey

CornellFanAnyone notice that Penn lost by 30 yesterday to Florida Gulf Coast? The Quakers scored an NCAA record, 6 points in the first half. Yes, just 6 points. That record didn't last long. Re: EZAC upsets?!? - 16 years ago
martyI think that what was in my head at the time concerned any out of conference win by an ECACH team - especially against a western school - as being an upset in the minds of many WCHA fans. Considering that the ECACH's OOC record is 37-46-9 this year, any OOC win is at least a borderline upset. Unless a couple of teams step it up during conference play, it is likely that the ECACH will haveby BillCharlton - Hockey
