Cornell wrestlers take fourth at Southern Scuffle - 16 years ago
The Big Red wrestling team finished in fourth place with 94 points at the 2007 Southern Scuffle this weekend. Freshman Mack Lewnes won an individual title at 165 pounds while his classmate, Mike Grey finished in second at 133. Juniors Steve Anceravage (174) and Zach Hammond (HWT) finished in third and fourth, respectively. Minnesota ran away with the title with 182 points. Edinboro finished seby BillCharlton - Other Sports

Re: Title IX & Profitability of College Sports (once was: Syracuse to add hockey) - 16 years ago
One thing to keep in mind with these numbers is that schools may count as revenue contributions from alumni and others, institutional support, State or other government support, student activity fees, and any other revenues attributable to intercollegiate athletic activities. In other words, schools such as Harvard and Brown use funds from these sources to make athletics "revenue neutral,&quby BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Track at Nationals (TV) - 16 years ago
Jacob '06 Cornell also brought a (cornell)record 11 athletes to the national meet this year. Sending this many athletes to Nationals is an impressive feat. There are no automatic qualifiers simply for winning a conference championship. Each athlete must meet difficult qualifying standards to be invited to the meet. The women's 800 was one of the better races I've seen in quite a while. Youby BillCharlton - Other Sports

Re: Syracuse to add hockey - 16 years ago
In revenue generation, the Ivies are at a disadvantage compared to D1 schools because, among other reasons, they attract small crowds at modest ticket prices and they do not have lucrative television and radio contracts. On the other hand, their expenses are low because they do not give athletic scholarships, they do not travel long distances, and they do not pay their coaches much. Re: Syracuse to add hockey - 16 years ago
I downloaded data on NCAA Division I-A football programs from the Office of Postsecondary Education (part of the Federal Department of Education) website that contradict Ugarte's assertions. These data are compiled from annual reports that all Division I-A schools (except for the Naval Academy and Air Force Academy) are required to submit to the Department of Education. Re: Syracuse to add hockey - 16 years ago
KeithK Beyond the scholarship issues, the mere roster size of football (beyond the "active roster" is an entire regiment of players who are never going to see a down on the field that year) creates massive funding imbalances, not to mention the budgets for recruiting, coaching, medical care, etc. Not only does football not create "massive funding imbalances," it actuallyby BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Duke players get extra year of eligibility - 16 years ago
What about the players at other D1 programs, particularly those in the ACC, who now have to compete against fifth-year seniors for the next three years? How do you think this decision affects their chances of ever playing for a championship? How is this decision fair to them? All the NCAA has managed to do is to make a much larger group of players pay the price for what the Duke players and admiby BillCharlton - Other Sports

Re: Schadenfreude - Duke vs. Hopkins NCAA lax title game - 16 years ago
That's what I'm afraid of. Hopkins winning the final can easily be used to justify that "the system worked." In that case Tambroni should do everything he can to upgrade the strength of schedule. Why can't we replace the likes of Binghamton, Colgate, Army, and Notre Dame with Hopkins, Virginia, or Maryland? Georgetown, Navy, or North Carolina would also be a significant upgrade. Re: Finger Lakes - the new lax capital - 16 years ago
If Syracuse is in the Finger Lakes region, would it be a stretch to include Albany, too? Ithaca College also had a pretty good year. I'm fairly sure they're in the Finger Lakes region.by BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Towson 6 @ Cornell 14 (F) - 17 years ago
From the "for what it's worth department," the eight-goal margin matched our season's average margin of victory. By the way, our RPI today would probably be better than Duke's because we beat another top 15 team (yay, strength of schedule) and Providence was ranked 45th before the tournament.by BillCharlton - Other Sports

Re: Crunching the numbers: How the NCAA seedings unfolded - 17 years ago
The link below is to a column by Dave Rahme in the Syracuse Post-Standard, in which he discusses how the Southern lacrosse powers manipulate the system and why the selection process is unlikely to change. I was pleasantly surprised that a Syracuse guy would write this, considering that the Orange are the only Northern team that can load their schedule in the same way as Hopkins and the ACC schoolby BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: M Lax Results 5/4-5/6 - 17 years ago
If the committee uses quality wins as the primary selection criterion, I expect to be seeded as low as 4 or 5. In an interview following the Hobart game, Tambroni said that after talking to other coaches he told the team that they could be seeded 3 or worse. Given the weakness of the Ivies this year (essentially no quality wins except for us), this result would not be surprising.by BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Swami's seeding prediction - 17 years ago
In contrast, after tomorrow we will have played six at home, six on the road, and one at a neutral site. Unfortunately, in its infinite wisdom the NCAA does not give extra weight to road wins. Margin of victory is another no-no, of course. We wouldn't want to encourage running up the score, as it could cause permanent psychological harm.by BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Princeton 6 Cornell 10 Lax FINAL - 17 years ago
Because he has underestimated Cornell all year, the LaxSalami(R) is deservedly mired in last place in his own "Big Boyz" competition. I think he put six chips on Princeton this week, helping to ensure that he will remain at the bottom. How is he going to rationalize Virginia's 10 to 9 home squeaker over Dartmouth a week after we pounded them at their place? I bet he still thinks Virginiby BillCharlton - Other Sports
Re: Lax Swami's anti-Big Red bias continues - 17 years ago
Until we win the title, or at least get to the championship game and give a good showing, self-proclaimed pundits will discount our regular season accomplishments. When was the last time we won the title? Almost 30 years ago. Princeton has won a number of titles since we last won, so it is not surprising that they get the benefit of the doubt. Virginia and Hopkins have had recent successes, as weby BillCharlton - Other Sports
