And, on the same day at the same place, Rob Pannell had four goals and four assists to lead all scorers in a USA team intrasquad scrimmage.

The tone of the Inside Lacrosse story makes this sound like a very, very good year for Cornell. Sounds as if we have 4 goalies. Be nice if we have one who manages to be as good as Tyler Fiorito. We should all be thankful to Rob Pannell for sticking with Cornell (okay, he was the team captain, so that makes it a little harder to transfer loyalties) and to the Pannell Family for forking over a ninth (spring 2013) semester of tuition.

Thirty years from now, if things go as planned, Rob will look back at this decision as one of the best he ever made. Memories that erase the foul taste of 2009 will be priceless.
This is not to say that Cornell fans everywhere don't owe the Pannells a tremendous debt of gratitude. We also owe a similar debt to the coaching staff (now and when Rob was recruited) for recruiting someone with such character and installing in him such loyalty to and love for alma mater.

vs. Hobart (at the Carrier Dome) - 02/24
vs. Binghamton - 02/26

@ Canisius - 03/05
@ Virginia - 03/09

vs. Princeton (at MetLife Stadium) - 04/27
Ivy League Tourney 05/03-05/05
Really interesting schedule. Love the additions of Colgate and Bucknell, and even Siena is a welcome change. Also the Hobart game being at the dome is pretty hilarious after all the hand-wringing over last year's cancellation. The mid-season run @Yale/Bucknell/Penn/Siena/Dartmouth in 11 days seems pretty daunting. Also, the 14 regular season games (not including possible Ivy Tournament games or NCAA games) are more games than we played all of last year.

Interesting is right. The stretch of 3 road, 4 home, 3 road is bizarre as is giving up an Ivy home game to play at MetLife. Last home game could be March 30?! Senior day in March with four regular season games left? Also note that March 30 falls on hockey regional weekend.
At least more games = more chances for QWs and more teams to drop from t-10 SOS.

And unfortunately, it's the only game close enough for a day trip for me.

I hope someone gives the lacrosse team bus drive a map before they get on the road.
(Tickets for the doubleheader start at $25/$30 incl. TM fees, or $20 for group of 10 or more, if this hasn't already been mentioned. Also, for those who REALLY want to make a day of it, the group order form I found on the Giants Stadium website says that there are also prep school lacrosse games at 11am and 1:15pm featuring three of the better teams in New Jersey and one from Missouri.)

Even if it isn't a "real" game, it's worth it. If the roster numbers aren't accurate, there will be plenty of people who know who is who [and you aren't shy, anyway]. The weather could be horrible, however....the main drawback to a lacrosse scrimmage in February.

The comments link to recruiting videos about facilities, etc. for 'Cuse & Notre Dame. Does Cornell have similar videos? Where?
Among other things, the videos show very nice indoor practice facilities for lacrosse. Nowadays, does Cornell have a facility like these? (Back in the day, we had a field house with a dirt floor. I don't remember its name . I just remember playing golf in it one January.)

Lacrosse practice from the Harkness years until the facility formerly known as Alberding was built were in the old polo barn just behind the Schoelkopf parking lot. Thankfully, there was no youtube then. It lives only in the nightmares of fat geriatric lacrosse alums.

Lots more great pics on Cornell Lacrosse Twitter Page Greg.
The picture also captures a team tradition: the scoreboard in the background shows 21-10. During practices they keep those numbers up to memorialize #21 George Boiardi and #10 Eamon McEneaney and the ethic those two characterized.

Shaughnessy Saves 19, But Stony Brook Falls to No. 6 Virginia
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Mark Cockerton scored five goals and the No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (3-0) outlasted the Stony Brook Seawolves (1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Virginia held a narrow one-goal lead going into the intermission, 6-5, but the Cavalier defense clamped and limited Stony Brook to only four shots in the second half.
"In conditions like this against a team that was fired up to play us, and to have a game that was back and forth almost the entire time until we took control of it in the fourth quarter, it was a very satisfying result for us,” said Virginia head coach Dom Starsia. ... [www.laxpower.com]

I was not at the game but watched on TV. I am not really sure how to evaluate AJ's game. He made some spectacular saves in the first half, when the game was close. He was a different goalie in the second half but I am not completely sure why. He was left hanging out to dry by his defense on a couple of those second half goals, but the difference in his stats can't be attributed only to his defense. Maybe a txt during halftime that upset him? Someone stole his wallet in the lockerroom? Lost a contact lens?

Always a chance the coaches have a fair idea of who the best goalie is. It was nice (schadenfreude-ish way) to see Quint Kessenich noting Princeton has goalie troubles now that the Fiorito years are done: [insidelacrosse.com] "16. Princeton — The Tigers topped Hofstra in in their first game, 10-7, a positive sign for a team that has question marks on defense and between the pipes. Matt O'Connor started in goal and earned his first collegiate victory. The Tigers won the shot stat 38-33 and groundballs were 30-23. Tom Schreiber and Mike MacDonald roll into Baltimore on Friday at 5 p.m."Robb

I am willing to give AJ a few games (particularly if we keep winning)
There has certainly been an issue in the past with him picking up the ball on shots from 15+ feet out
That said, it is my understanding that The Dome is challenging for goalies
I think after the next two games in more regular conditions, we will know a lot more about how he has improved at handling outside shooters and whether he has the leadership skills to direct his defense (might as well throw in a mention of clearing the ball too, elite goalies are supposed to be an asset there right?)

Cornell95
it is my understanding that The Dome is challenging for goalies
The Dome was challenging to goalies because the end zone seats were silver aluminum and that caused some difficulty in discriminating where the ball was until the movement could be tracked coming out of the stick, which might take a fraction of a second. Now, however, those end zone seats appear to have orange padding on them, so that problem seems to be cured.
The other reason The Dome was challenging to goalies was they were being shot at by the likes of the Gaits, the Powells, John Zulberti etc. etc. That problem also has been cured.

The week's least surprising news. Still, nice.Jim Hyla
Pannell named Ivy POTW.
A couple more games like this and you start to wonder where the 2013 attack ranks all-time at Cornell after the 1976 attack:
AA 1st team - French (1976 player of the year). So good he was player of the year before there was a Tewaaraton Trophy,
AA 1st team - McEneaney (your #10 on the practice scoreboard (RIP), and player of the year in 1977 as well as attackman of the year 1975 -- think a scrawny Rob Pannell with flaming red hair
AA 2nd team - Jon Levine
AA 1st team - middie Bill Marino
AA HM -- three more HM middies.
The only player at their level in the rest of D1 was Maryland's incredible middie Frank Urso. Having the best goalie in the country (Dan Mackesy) made life a little easier for the Cornell attack. Gad, they were good.
First, let's get a couple games in the W column. Today's Binghamton game, the only challenge (theoretically) should be video feed staying up and wondering why there's no fans at all (Crescent, opposite the camera(s?), is closed because of all the snow, with only the West Stands open [cornellbigred.com]). It is currently a balmy 39 degrees in Ithaca. Colgate will be a decent match Saturday. Then at-Virginia March 9 will be a huge test.

Looks like there's a CBS Sports webcast of next Saturday's lax game at Virginia. $6.95 for a month, but it's one of those deals where they will automatically renew the subscription on a monthly basis unless you specifically tell them to cancel your subscription.

Cornell scores the last 10 to pull away 18-7 over Canisius in what was a tight game for nearly three quarters. If livestats is correct, Pannell goes 4 and 4.

The Red were pretty sloppy through 3 quarters and AJ was not seeing the ball. Way too many sloppy passes and other unforced errors. Canisius played well, except for some dumb penalties. Much like our hockey team this season.

Half of all living Cornellians arrived after Richie Moran stepped down as lacrosse coach. It was great to see him in the stands at the Meadowlands stadium Saturday cheering on Cornell. being an incredible supporter of Cornell sports, and a link to the greatest years of Cornell lax who continues to be part of Cornell. I don't think you'll see Rick Pitino or John Calipari spending their post-coaching years on campus. (Jim Boeheim, yes, to his credit, will always be a Syracuse guy.) Richie is ever-upbeat and he must know every Cornellian who crossed his path. Somebody, please, name a building after Richie. I'll kick in for one of the men's room swinging doors.

Richie is awesome!!!!
I have to edit this post. I met Richie for the first time one memorial day weekend, actually on the saturday night after the semi-finals in 1987. It was in a crappy god-knows where motel in NJ after we had just defeated Syracuse, and the Gaits, in the NCAA semi final at Rutgers. I was a nobody, no lacrosse background, nothing,... and he made me feel like an expert. It was an amazing day. The game was tied 15-15 on a hot hot hot afternoon. Cornell with Goldstein and Wurtzberger clicking like they had all year, was gassed. The heat was taking its toll on our up-tempo game, and Syracuse was coming on to us and we had no timeouts left. Richie then pulls the ultimate move, a coaches stick check! A few minutes break while the stick was being checked, and just like he planned it, 3 goals in a row for the good guys and an 18 - 15 win. THE, THE, THE, best f'ing game I have ever seen. We had no time-outs left and the stick check was the only way to slow down the game and Richie pulled it off. The Syracuse coach, Simmons I think it was, was completely bullshit, screaming like a banshee, going nuts. Anyway, the rules were changed after that.
I met Richie a few times after that. He will not remember me, but I will never forget him.
A Cornell treasure.....

Pannell Named Ivy Player Of the Week For The Fourth Time This Season
ITHACA, N.Y. – It will come as no surprise to anyone who watched the Cornell men's lacrosse team's 17-11 victory over Princeton at the Big City Classic that Big Red senior Rob Pannell has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week, earning the honor for the fourth time this season. The award marks the 11th time in Pannell's career that he has been named the conference's player of the week...
With his performance against Princeton, Pannell moved into third place in NCAA Division I history for both career points (323) and career assists (190). He owns the longest goal scoring streak (33 games) and point scoring streak (68 games) in the nation and currently has a streak of 22 games in which he has registered at least three points....

Not sure about the discrepancy. As was already posted, he had 16 last year. I think the difference between third and fourth is whether Greer's year at Bryant counts. If I'm not mistaken they were quasi-D1 that year, like Penn State hockey was this past year. So it's ambiguous whether his stats count towards division 1 records.

Cornell probably has a more accurate count because it wants to publicize each RP3 milestone and doesn't want to have to issue corrections. He certainly is within striking distance of the points and assists records if the season extends the six more games we hope it does. Good for bragging rights in the future. Right, more wins is what counts.

By their own account, Cornell is not correct. The number is 327. Go to Cornell lacrosse's own bio of pannell and add up the first 4 years plus 2 games and you get 252 points. 75 this year makes it 327.

I agree, if we win the next 6 and RP3 does not score another point that is better than RP3 scoring another 30 and losing. I suspect RP3 would agree.
I am sure Princeton will come loaded for bear on Friday, it is do or die for them. Winning that game is the only thing that counts right now.

[insidelacrosse.com] the HS All-Americans playing in the North-South game include no one going to Cornell. A poster notes, "Cornell literally never has players on these lists. Yet every year they are in the top 10 or 5. Is it the type of character they recruit? How does that happen?"
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Penn have players. Syracuse and Maryland have a boatload, six each.
In the North-South game, the power of HS lax forces the Mason-Dixon line up to the Pennsylvania-NY border. PA and NJ are in the South.

Third team for Mock? They gave Pannell a lot of credit for Mock's numbers.

I guess scoring the most goals in Division I and the most goals per game isn't enough for an attackman to be first team?
Maybe the first team A's have other skills, like third languages, juggling, magic, or gourmet cooking abilities.

I know the Pannell Show is the prevailing narrative (nothing good rhymes with "Pannell" to work into a nickname like "Hrkac Circus", but this is a bit of a snub to Mock if you ask me, given that he leads the nation in goals per game.Jim Hyla

Let's hope the snub is a little incentive for the weekend.

If we had an all-round attackman on the second or third team snubbed by the elevation of a goals-oriented attackman, we would make the same argument in favor of our all-rounder. The voters may have seen a player whose production fell off in the 2012 season without Pannell feeding him.
There are already All-America slots for the faceoff specialist and long-stick midfielder. Maybe there should be one for pure goal scoring. The combination of two complementary players, Pannell and Mock, or McEneneany and French 1975-76 (only 2 varsity years overlapped), was more deadly that two attackman cut from the same cloth.
So let Mock be content with advancing further than the other two first-team AAs. And hopefully raising the big trophy Monday.
Steve Mock career stats 2103 59G 9G 68pts 16 games, before NCAA semis 2012 23G 6A 29pts No Pannell 2011 40G 3A 43pts (edit: 40 not 30 goals in 2011) 2010 21G 2A 23pts Play 13G, start 2

Mock's Pannell-free dropoff seems more dramatic if 30+3=43 but it doesn't. Was this a math error or a typo in his 2011 goals?billhoward

I would hope he and the rest already have all the incentive they need. It's championship weekend.

His bio page on the Cornell site says 40 goals, 3 assists.

Mock had 40 not 30 goals as a sophomore then with Panell out it fell to 23 as a junior and this year he is pushing 60. It may be that Pannell's amazing feeds allow Mock to be all he can be.

I guess lacrosse players have to work hard to get into the Olympics.
