It is hardly unusual for a teenaged player to make an NHL team out of training camp and get returned to juiors for seasoning, experience, etc. before he plays in his tenth NHL game. I would not be surprised if Marc-Eduoard Vlasic is playing in the QJMHL before the end of October. (Getting sent back to juniors is far better for a player's development than sitting on the pine. Ask Manny Malhotra.) Between that possibility and the reality that top-six defensemen will get hurt, I wouldn't rule out the possibilty that Doug Murray will play over forty games this season.

Given the two goals on them in the first 5 minutes, hopefully that helps Doug crack the lineup.

Doug is in the doghouse. Hasn't played regularly since January. Slight injury last year, sure, but he has been healed for a long time (mid/late March?). Only thing that I don't get is why they gave him a 3 year one-way contract (not sure if this is fact or just the Internet rumor). They must have thought he'd make more progress than he has so far.

I read on hfboards that Doug's contract is two-way in year one and one-way in years two and three.

He'll receive that amount of money whether he plays in the NHL or AHL. Players on one-way deals typically remain on the NHL level.

I wouldn't take the term so literally. Conditioning assignment just means being sent down, for a temporary, but perhaps indefinite amount of time, while still being paid at an NHL rate. This may exempt him from needing to clear waivers, I'm honestly not sure.

13.8. Conditioning Assignment. Unless a player consents, he shall not be sent to a minor league club for conditioning reasons. Nor shall such conditioning extend for more than 14 consecutive days without the player's consent. The player shall continue, during such period or mutually agreed to extension of such period, to receive the same salary, and be entitled to the same benefits, that he would have received had he continued to play with the Club.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. It's a way to circumvent puting him on waivers? I guess that's a good sign that they don't want to risk losing him. And perhaps they want him to get more playing time than he would have as the 7th/8th dman.

Yes. Players who are sent to a minor-league team on a conditioning assignment need not be placed on waivers when getting sent back to the minor leagues or returned to the NHL.

No way does Murray pass through waivers so this move makes a lot of sense. A team like Washington or Columbus would definitely put a claim in.

It really depends on which guy shows up. The McKee of 04-05 is a totally different on than the guy of 05-06 (hold the Wisconsin game). He's a reflex goalie so it'll take him more time to adjust to the pro's than a butterfly goalie would.

Lenny lets in 2 goals on 46 shots as the Rampage lose 3-1. A couple more good outings and you'd think Phoenix would consider calling him up, as most reports have indicated that Morrison and Cujo have been horrible.

Phoenix in my mind is the worst team in the NHL. Mike Barnett is far and away the worst GM in the league and that team has lacked direction for five years now. They actually have a decent blueline, but a bunch of over the hill forwards and never will be's. They actually have a decent core in Doan, Nagy, Comrie, Ballard, Morris, Jovanovski, Boynton, and Michalek but they have nothing past there. They were counting on guys like Roenick and Nolan to have big rolls and these guys are well past it and not at all suited to the "New NHL." I don't think much of Gretzky as a coach either. He is clearly very intense but Phoenix is much worse defensively than they should be. It all comes back to Barnett though, who has made awful trade after awful trade. The franchise has no direction on or off the ice. They do have a nice stable of young blueliners to build around though.

At that rookie tournament I went to I was amazed to see Phoenix seem to be the best team defensively, and it seems that their younger players are well rounded. I know at the NHL level their defense is not all that great.

Four of the eight guys you list as part of that "decent core" (Comrie, Michalek, Ballard, Morris) were acquired by trade under Barnett's watch (and were acquired for not a whole lot); Jovanovski and Boynton were free agent signings by him. (Roenick and Nolan don't have a whole lot left but they've only got one-year contracts at a little over $1 mil, not all that much of a gamble in the scheme of things.) I don't think Barnett is doing all THAT badly - I think you're more on the right track as far as Gretzky not being all that hot of a coach.

Barnett has signed the following free agents, all well past their primes: Nolan, Roenick, Ricci, Hull, Laraque, Joseph. Pretty clear that isn't how you win in the New NHL yet he still went after these types this past summer. Basically moved Langkow and Handzus out for nothing as well.

Best trade he ever made was fleecing the most overrated GM ever (Pierre Lacroix) by bringing in Morris and Ballard for Vaananen and pending FA Gratton.

Also, Boynton was acquired in a trade this summer for Paul Mara.

LE-NE-VEU! LE-NE-VEU!

After the bit of coverage we saw about that guy in Montreal being the first player in the NHL to wear #84, the last two-digit number never worn in the NHL, SI's Brian Cazeneuve wrote a short article about the best player to wear each number in the NHL. Joe makes the cut for #25, Dryden for #29. Doug Murray is not yet the greatest wearer of #41, but I have no doubt he'll pass Stu Barnes within a couple years.

Edit: No other school had more than one player listed.

Lenny was solid in his first game. Let in a weak goal to F. Pisani but that was after making two great saves on breakaways by A. Hemsky. He had no chance on the second goal. Gretzky has already indicated that he has the hot hand and will be starting versus the Rangers on Saturday night.

Guess he'll get 2 wins in a row. *sob*

Lenny is getting shelled by the Rangers 5-1 in the 2nd. Seems like he's not doing that bad but the Phoenix "D" has left him out to dry.

Yeah, he's actually playing descently. Phoenix is terrible (and the Rangers top lines are finally clicking)

I saw most of the first two periods and it was easily the Rangers most productive offensive effort of the season. Lenny actually held his own durign the onlsaught (he stopped Betts off a breakaway), and a couple of the goals were off of weird deflections.

Even the Great One thought Lenny played well despite the final (7-3 Rangers).

Looks like Doug was happy to get back into game action! Looking at the box score, the hooking penalty worries me more than the other two regarding the chances of Doug's continued playing time.

Edit: Far be it from me to disagree with Wayne Gretzky. Lenny played about as well as a goalie can play when he gives up 7 goals.
