NHL Draft -- The Selections

Dallas drafted Raymond Sawada #52 overall.

Seven college or college-bound players were taken in the first round.

What's the highest a Cornell player has gone in the draft? Lenny was in the 40's somewhere, right?

By the way, Sawada was the second ECAC player to get drafted today. Dartmouth defenseman Grant Lewis went at #40 overall, to Atlanta.

Ryan Hughes was #22 overall, 2nd round in 1990. That's the earliest I can remember.

Dryden was 14th. Nieuwendyk 27th.

And as a piece of color, Christopher Bourque, Ray's son, went 33rd to Washington.

With the 212th overall pick (7th round), Montreal selected Jon Gleed.

With the 237th overall pick (8th round), Atlanta selected Mitch Carefoot.

So that makes it....10....draft picks on our roster, I think?

Congrats to Gleed and Carefoot as well. Carefoot was ranked, but this must have been a pleasant surprise for Gleed.

There had been speculation that Phoenix would select Michigan goalie Al Montoya with its pick. But Gretzky said the team ultimately decided against it, especially considering it has former Cornell star Dave LeNeveu in its system.

"We think Montoya's a great goaltender," said Gretzky. "It was a tough decision for us, and probably the biggest reason we decided to go the other way was the fact that our best young prospect is a goaltender.

"It's always a tough decision when you have people sitting there and everyone has their opinions and thoughts. We know Montoya is going to be a great goaltender. Good for him. But we just felt that the youngster we took is a pretty special kid and has great upside, and we're really happy with LeNeveu."

FYI, I have comments from Montreal regarding Jon Gleed that will be in a forthcoming article. Right now, I need to sleep. Sawada seemed like a super kid.
