Huh. The Islanders couldn't have topped that package?

The Los Angeles Kings traded goaltender Jonathan Bernier to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Matt Frattin, goaltender Ben Scrivens and a second-round draft selection, the team announced Sunday.

Bernier played 25 games in 2010-11, 16 games in 2011-12 and 14 games in 2012-13. Unless Quick gets hurt I'd guess that Scrivens gets 17-20 starts or so. Their top AHL goalie (Martin Jones) has played for 3 seasons in the AHL without an NHL call-up.

Michael McCarron, brother of John, who formerly committed to Cornell, and then vetoed that for a commitment to Western Michigan, has now scrapped the NCAA plan entirely, and will report to the London Knights of the OHL after signing a three-year deal with Montreal:

I'm not sure if he "vetoed" Cornell, or there was an issue with admissions.

This isn't a huge surprise. In his post-draft interview, I certainly remember a bit of "my parents thought it was important to get a good education." He de-committed from Michigan St. to commit to Cornell, and no offense to the good folks of Western Michigan U, but I'm willing to bet Kalamazoo studies wasn't what his family had in mind. It seemed to me that he was itching to go the pro-route.

Is it just me, or does "commit" sound just a little wrong.

I believe he tweeted at the time that his test scores weren't high enough for Cornell. If they had been I think we would have seen him for 1-2 years.

Given that the Canadiens have been steering their college-bound first rounders to major juniors (though it took a season to get Louis Leblanc to the Q), I think you would only have seen Michael on campus to visit his brother. Chris Peters had a good piece on this a few days ago in his United States of Hockey blog.

It's not about Cornell alumni, but John Buccigross's recent article about the retirement from hockey of Blake Geoffrion (Wisconsin '10) after sustaining a serious head injury last November is definitely worth a read.

McCarron still needs work on some of his decision-making and his penchant for ill advised penalties...

If you could get one of his (their) stem cells, maybe we could work on it.

He usually goes to Lynah for the boys hockey camps. My kids have met his son and Joe signs autographs at Lynah typically. Super nice guy. Dustin Brown should be buying the beer this summer though with that contract......

In their second pre-season game, the Kings used Ben Scrivens for the full 60 minutes against Phoenix, with Ben giving up 4 goals on 34 shots in a 4-2 loss. Also, Scrivens in his new Kings gear:
