It would be great to see him make the final cut; Bardreau's really coming into his own, and he's a "glue" kind of player essential to any winning team. I enjoy watching that tournament, and it would be icing on the cake to have one of our own representing the USA.

It would be great...except, you know, for the fact he'd miss four games for the Red! Best of luck to him, but it would be sort of an awkward situation, no?

While it would certainly be a loss to the team for Bardreau to miss those four games, we have enough depth up front that I think we'd get by in reasonable shape.

Good recap evaluation here. Our boy is near the top of the list!

Chris Peters
Cole Bardreau — F — Through the first period, Bardreau was Team USA’s best forward. He’s playing a grinder type of role, but he has such speed and tenacity that he was able to get a few offensive chances as well. He was great on the PK and was a terror for opposing D on the forecheck. He even the body around a bit. He’s a role player, but he’s really good at that role.

Just a heads up for everyone watching the games, one of the top line forwards on team USA is Boston College's John Gardreau, so listen carefully before assuming they're calling Cole's name.

Does anyone know when they're making the final cuts? If I'm not mistaken, there's 26 on the current roster for 23 final spots, with most likely one forward and two defensemen to cut.

Apparently

Cole's role with Team USA is expanding.

Cole makes the final roster, and not only that, will wear an A on his jersey for approximately half the games. So that means we won't have him for Estero definitely and likely not for Denver either unless team USA is out very early.

That's not right. Andy was on team USA two years ago. The way it is listed is based on when the tournament ends I guess, making this the 2013 World Junior Championships.

Cole's line has drawn two German penalties in the first 6 minuteas of the game. Both drawn by his right winger Ryan Hartman. 1-0 team USA on a goal on the first shift of the game.

I don't think he'll end up with a point, but Cole was parked in front of the net for a Trouba slapshot that made it 2-0 8:30 into the first.

After the first period, 3-0 team USA. Cole +1, his line draws two German penalties, and in the first PK unit an on the ice for probably about half of a successful penalty kill.

Cole picks up his first point getting the secondary assist at 7:55 into the second period. Beautiful long pass up ice during a line change to Pietila, who shoots it and Hartman buries the rebound. 6-0 USA now. The 5th goal was ripped from the point on the powerplay by Union defenseman (and Flyers prospect unfortunately) Shayne Gotisbehere.

Cole draws a hooking penalty with about 4 minutes to go in the second. Still 6-0 USA.

Cole on the ice for goal by Seth Jones to make it 8-0 halfway through the third. The 8 goals have been scored by 8 different players.

8-0 final. Nice win. Will be interesting to see how they do tomorrow against Russia. I would assume before a much bigger and much more partisan crowd too.

You should only be worried about Flyers prospects if they're forwards. We don't have the patience to develop d-men. We just offer sheet them instead.

Russia up 1-0 on an early powerplay goal. Cole was on the ice for the penalty so he couldn't be out there for the first wave of kill when Russia scored. He did some nice work killing a couple later penalties. Team USA having all kinds of trouble staying out of the box.

Cole's line forced another penalty as Hartman just got tripped. Team USA powerplay at 12:28 in second period, still 1-0 Russia.

Trouba ties it on that powerplay. Cole's line gets the next shift.

2-1 Russia 5 minutes into the third.

Cole's left winger (and Devils prospect!) Blake Pietila draws a penalty with 1:32 to go in the third. Still 2-1 Russia.

Team USA fails to convert, and Russia holds on to take all 3 points. Up next, Canada at 4:30 AM on Sunday.

Chris Peters, whose blog at unitedstatesofhockey.com is a must follow for those interested in U.S. Junior Hockey, had this to say after today's game:

Cole Bardreau — Named Team USA’s player of the game today, Bardreau scored the game’s first goal, a pretty backhander, and was able to affect the game with his speed. He set the tone for the U.S. early and kept his gritty play up to the final buzzer. He has done a good job of pestering opponents and getting the puck up ice for numerous scoring chances. He was finally rewarded for what has been an overall tremendous tournament for the undersized center.

However, they have yet to play or sing the Slovakian anthem.
Too bad, it's kickass. (Although it's Slovak, not Slovakian.)

Any anthem is kick-ass compared to ours.

That's what happens when you take a drinking song with parts in two separate registers and expect one voice to sing it all.

Anyway, nobody's ever going to beat The Internationale for a stirring anthem. The workers, united, will never be defeated. :)

Members of the band claim they know it, but the band stopped playing the anthems when they removed the stand behind the east goal and moved the band into the stands.

They took that stage away?! That's heresy; it was one of the signature features about the Field House. Might as well pull the pews out of Appleton. :-(

Completely agree. What possible motivation could they have for doing that? Plans for an ice-end luxury box? They want to have more interaction between the student section and the band? The stand wasn't interfering with anyone.

I think about 10 years ago, CU pulled the basketball band from behind the basket and put them back in the grandstand after an opposing coach had a confrontation with them, but at Houston, there's a huge glass divider there.

It happened in the summer of 2011 when there was a lot of renovation to the HFH including luxury boxes on the west end. The risers, where the tickets allocated for visiting fans were, no longer exist, and those tickets are now in the corner. They have kept quiet about the plans for the east end. Most people think that they will eventually build more luxury boxes there.

Most RPI fans also liked having the band on the stage where they could heckle the opposing goalie for two periods. The only positive about the move is that the band now gets up and moves toward center ice between periods 2 and 3 where they can lead the students in the alma mater, or at least they could if the students knew the words. :-D

The game started at 4 am EST. I was sleeping while Bardreau got his assist.

OK, snark aside, I'm happy to hear about Cole's performance. He was mentioned in a few tweets today about being a standout. In a pre-tournament article somewhere, I remember reading that he was focusing on being more of a "pesky" and high-energy player for the WJC team. I wonder if he has altered his game permanently and will bring that back, or if his game with CU was geared towards a specific role on his line and will return to a more "goal-scoring" M.O.

It's a little reminiscent of when Kent Manderville left for Team Canada and changed his game from finesse scorer to defensive specialist. He had to do this to get playing time against better competition. It served him well as he went on to a long NHL career.

(Hearsay at the time was Coach McCutcheon had tried to get him to make this change all along, but he was resistant. c.f. Romano, Tony)

Personally, I am not wishing for any Cornell player to retreat from scoring attempts. Fire wagon hockey is not really our problem right now. :)

Well, the good thing about the US game being such a blowout is that I got to skip ahead on the DVR to SUI-RUS, which was fun until it ended with my favorite* international hockey team losing to my least favorite, in my least favorite part of the international game. Schiisäufmetr! :-(

* Exception made for tournaments like this one, where a Cornellian is playing for one of the teams.

From the CHN article on the game:

-The Grind Line of Blake Pietila, Cole Bardreau and Ryan Hartman continued to do its thing. They helped shut down the Czechs’ top line of Hyka, Hertl and Dmitrij Jaskin, and they were a big part of Team USA’s perfect penalty kill. The trio made an impact in the offensive zone, too. Hartman scored the Americans’ third goal, with Bardreau picking up an assist as he moved the puck to Trouba at the point. Bardreau was robbed of a goal in the first when Hertl slid through the crease to stop a shot that was on its way in

Ralph,
You left out one important fact. The "luxury boxes" are for the enjoyment and entertainment of the queen and her court. Read between the lines. On most nights they are dark and empty (as they were on 12/31/12). It seems as they are being used to entertain the bigwigs at the Tute. Or in other words, you can't buy a seat there for single games nor season tickets. The seats seem to be a perk given to good boys and girls.

The Swedes are the defending champions and the US isn't terrible, so I don't think it's a huge shocker.

The US has never met Sweden in a gold medal game. Actually the US has only gotten to the gold medal game three times before (all against Canada, losing in 1997 and winning in 2004 and 2010). The Swedes are 2-8 in finals (wins against Finland and Russia; 5 losses to Canada and 3 to the USSR).

This will be only the second time in history there are consecutive champions not from Canada or USSR/Russia (the Czechs won in 2000 and 2001), and only the 4th final not to include either Canada or USSR/Russia.

I'm fine with the shootout in NHL regular season games, but that's about it. I don't think it belongs in college hockey or any game with real significance.

I'm basically fine with the shootout if it doesn't determine who wins. What I'd like is for the game to act as a tie, but for the shootout to factor into tiebreakers for playoff seeding at the end of the season. Heck, I'd even be okay with it being an important tiebreaker.

For beer league, both teams should get a coupon, but the team that lost the shootout can only buy Natty Ice.

With no NHL to watch and you need more of a hockey fix, 4 am it is for early games. Thankfully the title game is Saturday at 8. Did anyone who watched the encore presentation in late afternoon, without knowing the USA-Canada winner, find it annoying that the crawler at screen bottom read "USA-Sweden Gold Medal Game 8 am Saturday"?

That third period shut down was what we used to be able to do. How did we lose it? I don't know any easy way to find out, but in recent years I have to think we have been much poorer in protecting a lead.
