2010 NCAA hockey regional ticket situation

I've never worried about tickets to the ECAC final - just walk up and plenty of seats are available. But what is the experience of people who've been to the NCAA first-round regional games? Capacity of the Albany Times-Union Center for hockey is 14,200. That sounds as if it won't sell out but you may wind up far from the ice if you just walk up and buy.

No trouble walking up and getting tickets in Providence in 2003. BC, Ohio State, and Mankato were the other teams. It was pretty much sit wherever you wanted.

Nothing yet on the Cornell site. If you're a student, and there's a student rate, I would highly recommend purchasing tickets from Cornell. Once they send back their allotment, you can no longer get the cheaper rate.

Just called the Ticket Office, there is a message from Gene saying that tix for NCAA ice hockey in Albany will go on sale Tuesday. Expecting a high demand so tickets might be sold via lottery. For the last four regionals, I've called and gotten tickets through Cornell. Don't know if the Albany location with increased demand will change the procedure.

I haven't seen them myself, but I have a number of friends who have purchased tickets already

I don't expect the Friday games to sell out, but there should be a good crowd there with three "local" teams: UNH, RIT and Cornell. As a matter of fact, the last time Cornell played UNH in the NCAAs it was at Worcester and the arena was virtually sold out. That was a smaller arena than Albany, but UNH will bring a big crowd down to Albany.

Deadline for ticket order submission is Tuesday, March 23 at 2:00pm. They must be faxed (607-254-2981) or hand-delivered to the Cornell Athletic Ticket Office in Bartels Hall. You will receive an email confirmation when your order form is received by the Ticket Office.

The last two ECAC championship weekends the Cornell ticket office distributed sections 118 through 115, and clearly had some seats in 119 as well. This year we were the one-seed going in, but last year we were not, so if they are doing it by seeds, they are not doing it that way consistently from year to year.

Times Union Center confirmed that Cornell is begin allocated tickets in section 118.

Just spoke to CU ticket office and they do not know yet which section they will be allotted. Conference call later today. the person at TUC also said they had no information yet....

I called the box office. They said Cornell will have 116-119. I will not vouch for the accuracy though.
I then asked for tickets near there and they referred me to 800 303-8368, tickets.com.
Tickets.com (via the 800# above) couldn't do any better than section 125, which is available on the internet.

I called the Times Union Center using 518-487-2000 to get the information on Cornell's section.

I was able to get tickets in 117 and 119 by calling the 800# and purchasing each day separately. All-Session Pass was cheaper but seat selection for that package was limited and lousy.

For the ECACs last weekend, signs posted said "No Re-Entry," but you were able to do so quite easily. As a matter of fact, when we re-entered, they didn't even check our tickets. However, they may not be as lax this weekend, so don't count on being able to leave and re-enter.

I was also told section 118. They do not know the information for any of the other teams, which is a little odd.

We're in 106 Friday...making the odds high for that being UHN's.

I wouldn't assume that re-entry policy is the same for NCAA playoffs as it was for ECAC playoffs.

Cornell ticket office still does not have information on section for Albany, but will have a conference call within the hour and will post the information they get online.

For those going, which hotels do you plan to stay at? I've never been to Albany so I'm not really sure where to start looking.

The Hampton Inn on Chapel St. is where many people stayed this past weekend, it's less than a 10 minute walk to the arena and conveniently located near quite a few bars.

I usually stay out on Wolf Rd. in Colonie. 5-10 minute drive to the TUC. Plenty of restaurants and shopping to kill non-hockey time.

Last weekend I stayed at the Days Inn. I booked there for this coming weekend, too. $116 for two nights.

Yes, single day is what most of us have been buying to get near/in the Cornell block.

The online ticketing system seems to be giving you better seats when you buy single-session tickets than the package. You may be able to call and get your desired section. I decided to go with StubHub (Section 120, which is center ice, one section away from the edge of the Cornell tickets). So now I just have to pray to the FedEx gods.

Just called and talked to an actual ticket sales rep. Closest I could get was 116 for 5 seats. According to her, 117-122 are largely sold out, but still have a few pairs/ 3 seats. So I'd say buy soon!

Maybe those sections are hard to get because those are the seats that are given to the CU ticket office. I just went with best available...I have faith in the Faithful that no matter where I sit it will be a Cornell section.

118 went to the CU ticket office, so you can;t get them through the TUC. However 117 and 119 still have seats, just not many, so I imagine those did not go to Cornell, but will be largely Cornell.

UNH will make a good showing I'm sure. I sat in a UNH section in '03...it was not fun. Too much NASCAR talk

Agreed. I'm fighting that same battle right now on the phone.

And we lost the battle (though I will say that the ticket agent tried a number of ways to get me the all-session package deal - kudos to him for his efforts). So just as above, I have the same seats for both days, but have to pay for singles. BTW, we're in Section 116 Row E. That was as close as I could get to 118.

Apparently, certain seats have been allocated to the single session buying block and are not available for the all-session pass. For what it's worth, even though I already have tickets, I just checked though the website for Best Available Friday and the tickets shown happened to be in 117, Row R.

As another data point, I just talked to RIT's box office, and they expect to start selling theirs when their box office opens tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with them as well. At the moment they are "still unclear whether demand will require a lottery." Not sure how that will be determined, but they will be on sale at some point tomorrow. I was also told they have 116 and 118, not sure what happened with 117.

From the TUC seating chart, I'd guess 116 will be the standing section, with the more sedate types in the 2-3 sections to its left and right.

I just bought a pair of tickets in Section 117, Row M, for cost which is $41 per ticket for Friday night. I bought these from a broker. He has six tickets left in that section and row for Friday night, and 8 left in that section and row for Saturday night. He charges $15 for Fed Ex 2-day shipping and $25 for overnight shipping. I don't think I should post his contact information in a public forum so (and I can't believe I am saying this seriously) PM me for details. Or e-mail me at ajw4@cornell.edu.

I also can't believe I'm not going Saturday night. The same play that kept my younger daughter from being with us last weekend (due to rehearsals) is being performed this weekend, and it is only being performed on Friday and Saturday. Our original plan, should Cornell win on Friday night, was to drive back to Ithaca Friday night, see the play Saturday afternoon, and rush back to Albany, either just making the opening faceoff, or missing it by a few minutes. But that was when I thought the game started at 7:00, since that was the time posted on the Times Union website. I learned late yesterday that the game is scheduled for 6:30, which would mean an extra six hours of driving probably to catch only the second and third periods, and completely missing the first. Given the choice of that, or watching the whole game on TV, I've got to go with watching the whole game. My mood yesterday upon learning that the game was scheduled for 6:30 instead of 7:00 could best be described as extremely frus-tra-ted.

Looks like buying through the Cornell ticket office shouldn't be a problem. Just got an IM from my dad who called this AM to ask about whether they would be going to a lottery or not.

According to Gene in the ticket office demand for hockey tickets is relatively low and so Cornell should get as many tickets as they need to fill their demand, according to the TUC ticket office. So if you faxed in a form to Cornell you should be getting your tickets.

Four all-session seats in Section 120, Row L are available for cost at Stubhub (price gets slightly higher when you compare their fees and shipping to Albany's fees). These must be from the same seller I used, probably adjacent to mine (toddler warning!).

Anyway, you may be cutting it close with shipping. Mine are scheduled to arrive tomorrow, but I ordered yesterday.

Just putting it out there... These are center-ice seats just one section removed from the edge of the Cornell corner. I'd rather these go to our fans than UHN's.

I think if you wait until after the first game is over you may be able to pick up cheap tickets for at least the Saturday game from fans of whatever team lost. In fact that might be the reason for the rumor of no readmission, as you could also purchase their Friday tickets and gain admission to the second game.

Thinking more about it, if they do allow readmission they are really opening themselves up to people getting in free. One could leave between games with, say, six tickets--your own and five friends', who are staying inside, and then return with five more friends. Obviously this would be unethical at best and possibly even illegal, but it would also be almost impossible to catch.

They did allow readmission last weekend, and the situation was the same, so perhaps they don't care about that gaping flaw in their system.

The way to prevent the above would be to also handstamp people, but they were not doing that last weekend. Of course they may this weekend.

On the other hand, buying a ticket from someone who only watched the first game, and who is really leaving I see as just fine from an ethical standpoint. The ticket was good for two games, and two games will be watched, albeit not by the same person.

That's a good point... there will probably be some RIT/Denver fans looking to unload their evening tickets. Are both games on 1 ticket, or are there separate tickets for the afternoon and evening games? Buying a 'used' ticket seems more shady than buying a separate unused ticket for the evening game.

I'm not looking to sneak in for free, but I also don't want to spend $200 to bring the family to see the game.

About right. Don't get me wrong, there are some ¢¢ stuff the league does, such as force schools to charge students even though they are normally admitted for free, like at Clarkson, and force fans to buy the league package for tournament video, like they did for b2 vs. Redcast. But as far as the way the tournament is was run in Albany, I felt generally it was fan friendly.

I also confirmed with ticket office - if you submit a form you'll get tickets in the Cornell sections. No lottery for hockey.

My Credit Card just got charged by the Cornell Ticket Office and the website says that the deadline to submit a fax is extended to 6pm Tuesday.

If you decide to go this route make sure you can pass for a student. I know that last year when I bought both student (for my kids) and adult tickets, the Cornell ticket office just took the regular tickets, made some sort of mark on them to indicate that they were student tickets, and then handed them to me. So the people at the door at the Times Union Center could easily have differentiated between student and adult tickets. Naturally I don't know if RIT will be doing something like this, but they may.

Not to reignite a debate about our athletic ticket office, but everyone should take note of Yale's package for its students:

All-session tickets will go on-sale directly through the Athletics Ticket Office (20 Tower Pkwy.) at 2pm on Tuesday, March 23 for $35. The all-session ticket provides admission for all three games. Tickets for Yale students will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bus transportation (Saturday 11:30 a.m. departure) will be provided free-of-charge for students who purchase a game ticket. The buses will return immediately after the Yale game.

Just got nine tickets in Section 115 for Friday (alas, we cannot attend Saturday). We're bringing a family who's oldest son is a local hockey phenom; he will be attending one of the New England Prep powerhouses next year as a Freshman. I don't know if he'll develop into a D1 prospect, but I might as well expose him to what Cornell hockey is all about

a) it's nice that Yale and RIT do this
b) sometimes children need to be taught proper behavior (support your team) with inducements

Just got my tickets an hour ago from the ticket office. I must say the Cornell ticket office is not the most proficient ticket office to deal with. It seams like they try to make things a lot more difficut than it really needs to be. They should just distribute tickets as people show up ( first come first serve ) It's not the first time they have had teams in the playoffs you would think by now they would no that their "system" makes far more work for themselfs. The lottery is usually a joke. In 03'they played the lottery game and got left with a lot extra tickets( Gene was trying to sell them on the street in Buffalo) Wake up ticket office you make things more difficult than it really needs to be!

I suspect they don't make policy, they're just stuck carrying it out.

Give those poor people a break!!! The "ticket office" is Gene plus 1 or 2 other people on a good day. And a lot of their help is part-time student staff who are probably on break. Between the NCAA rules, dealing with high demand for tickets for two different sports, the number of phone calls they have fielded just from people posting on the forum and their regular work, the fact that they can get the turn around the ticket orders as quickly as they do is commendable.

Gene was not even in the office from Thursday until yesterday so being shorthanded does not fly with me. If he was really interested in making things operate better he would have been prepared for any and all teams to be in the playoffs.Most of my complaint is the lack of direction at times and not telling his own people what is going on with ticket distribution. This is not the first bad experience with the office and probably won't be the last due to the fact that I still love CU athletics. That being said I think they could simplify the way they do things and make their jobs and our experience a lot more enjoyable

If Cornell wins, and you don't yet have Saturday tickets, that broker I spoke of has arranged to have tickets left at the hotel desk at The Hampton Inn, a few blocks from the Times Union Center. These seats are in Section 117, Row M, and the cost would be $41 per ticket, which is face value. I believe there are a total of 8 available.
