I'm not setting up a webcam. That just brings up bad memories. But I can take some photos walking in to work and keep a blog. It gives me something to do with that domain name I'm not using, anyway.

Not to be greedy, but I'd love to see inside pictures. But I suspect that would be a little harder to get. Certainly more effort than just snapping shots on the way to work.

Only entrance I've seen with any sort of access is the Zamboni entrance, though there was a practice going on and the zamboni in the way at the time. Shutters are all down on the Bartels side, and I think there was something blocking view from the north door.

You can still enter the rink by the doors on the west end closest to the crescent. THere are still hockey classes and public skate this week. After that I don't think you will be able to access it.

In case anyone is serious... From my experience on Cornell construction sites, I would also add safety glasses and a nextel phone on your hip to the list. Also, if you are six feet tall or taller, weighing 160 lbs or less is a huge give away. If you are wearing a tie, you are even less likely to be spoken to.

BTW, I'm not suggesting anyone enter a restricted construction site. I'm simply making fun of the managers and workers on said sites.

If you are really going to follow this perhaps CSTV could offer the construction channel. It could be the 24hr construction network, all construction all the time.

The press box is gone, all of the plaastic seats are gone, tomorrow the toliets go and they start digging for the tunnel that will go to the rink. The ice will go away on March 29 all according to super at the josb site today

The initial burst coincidentally abates as soon as enough material has been removed that the job must go forward to completion, rather than just keeping the old configuration.

They aren't entirely sure yet, but what they were initally saying was the Ramin room. How you play floor hockey on turf I don't know. I suggested to them trying the tennis courts on north, I haven't heard what the final plan is yet.

... so when does the icemaking get turned off? Not sure how you show a picture of ice melting, but, Age, if you can get one, we'll view it.

You can tell by the new stream coming out the zamboni door and the pile of red and blue ice. They're starting to do some more substantial excavation on the south side today. I'll get some photos at lunch.

I noticed that the "new seating" is behind what is currently seating for students. As we all know, students don't sit during games. Since this new seating wraps all the way around, I'm assuming it's been planned to be at the same level. I hope the architects took into consideration the sight lines behind your average height student who stands...at Albany the standing sections left the back row empty so that the box seats could see better. Does anyone know if this has been thought about?

I strongly suspect the new seating on the south side is specifically for the students; hopefully this also means they're returning what remains of section C (above the new tunnel) to the students, as well. The new skyboxes are on the north side.

I hope any (and every future) expansion offers a relative increase in student seating. If students represent approximately 40% of capacity & they're expanding by 450, offer 180 to students. I'd also like to see more more band participation, if possible. So work that into the mix.

Of course, that would leave 270 seats, of which 150 are in the boxes. If most of the boxes are sold to Corporate folks (non-season ticket holders?), it might only dent the season ticket wait list. If, however, all seats on the south side go to students (including Section C), and if all the boxes go Corporate, and if the platform is only for accessibility needs...let's see, Lynah would increase seating by around 12% and might not even touch the waiting list. Actually, I guess that would increase the list because someone would get bumped by those being relocated from Section C. Wouldn't that be something? Not saying that's going to happen, but wouldn't that be something.

The north side specifically says "New Box Seating". The south side says only "New Seating". This is why I suspect the boxes are on the north only.

If I had to guess, the new seats will either be bleachers above the existing south concourse, or will be seamless with the existing sections, only with access points and stairs.

Edit: furthermore, the ~400 capacity addition they're talking about would be impossible to achieve with anything short of bleachers, especially since they're already losing seats in C.

Losing seats in C from the tunnel, but also gaining (probably more) back by moving the press box up. That's, what, two or three rows?

after a closer look at the cited plan, i'm wondering where the players/penalty benches will be located? the drawing only accounts for a single players bench and no sin-bins. any thoughts?


EDIT: on second thought, my guess is nothing will change from the current setup. the PA booth will just be the door to the new tunnel and the players benches remain where they currently are located. althought this now leaves Arthur with no place to sit …

I know this is Cornell Athletics we're talking about, but I have to assume that even they aren't this dumb.

At the very worst, a very large steel beam supporting the roof 2-3 feet in from the current exterior wall would eliminate this issue.

(1) What is currently behind the south wall underneath the stands? Is that solid concrete?

(2) You walk into the lobby from the south side. How do you get to seats -- up a stair to a concourse on the same level as the current (narrow) concourse, or thorugh a lobby floor-level tunnel under the stands that emerges in the seating area at ice level.

I believe the new locker rooms are going down near ice level, but the entrance will continue to be up where it was. The only ones climbing stairs will be the players.

That's what I assumed they would be doing when the first vague descriptions started floating in. It seemed to me to make sense. You don't necessarily need windows in a locker room.

Cardiovascular training and rehabilitation rooms are going where the big hole currently is. I guess if they excavate all the way accross the length of the rink then we're know they've moved the locker rooms. But as I look at the plans in the video, and where the hole is, it makes sense to me.

Anything new lately? NHL playoffs just haven't been doing it lately.

If I come up for the lax game, I'd loan you my IS infrared lens with the XRay flash. It may disrupt Resnet communications for a few seconds when it goes off, but the pictures come out great. Brick and steel is no problem, plastic sheeting even less. We want more! Photos.

While the Elmira Star-Gazette bears the title of First Gannett Newspaper (100 years old this year), it isn't often internationally known (eLynah does have a regular contributor based in Australia - right?) for breaking news stories. Today's sports section reports the manager of First Arena in Elmira as saying last night, "Cornell is looking to have home games at the arena. Cornell will be renting the building."

I disagree. BU is up there with Clarkson and WMU (sans thunderstix) among the best home crowds I've seen as a visiting fan. UVM in 1997 should be on the list too, I guess, but I never came away with a lot of respect for them as individuals. And their band sucks, other than when they're leading Vermont's one cheer.

Cornell's summe 2006 'Communique' features an article on the Lynah renovation. What caught my eye is "expected to finish in time for January home games." Of course, the article mentions that and then says absolutely nothing about what they would do for games before then.

I believe that the First Arena in Elmira is the frontrunner in hosting the early 06-07 home games. In February, the (at that time) General Manager of the First Arena said that they are holding 6 dates open for CU Hockey. Their policy is that, if they sign an agreement for those six dates, they will expect CU to pay the bill.....even if CU doesn't use the First Arena. For those who don't follow the circus (otherwise known as ownership of the Elmira Jackals & First Arena), it's very likely that the ownership will botch this opportunity to bring CU Hockey to Elmira. Stay tuned! We have to hope that the progress on Lynah remains ahead of schedule!

The Spring 2006 hockey newsletter has the following in "Coach's Corner:" "The weather has cooperated in the construction efforts and we are all hoping to be able to play our first games this fall in Lynah. We are scheduled to move into the new locker rooms before the end of the year. The project is slated for completion in the spring of 2007 when landscaping is finished."

Haven't seen any new photos posted on the blog in two months. Surely something must be happening on the outside of Lynah that is photographable?

just a note.. i was informed they will be making ice within the next 2 weeks. so they must be failry well along on the inside..

We had running water in our guest bathroom room two months before it was suitable for use. But let's hope. It's incredible when any construction happens on time, more so when the government or academia is involved.

According to this article at CSTV, they're also adding a center-ice scoreboard. I don't remember seeing that in other descriptions of the renovations.

Four questions and a comment come to mind:

1. How is that even structurally possible without Pokulok, er, O'Byrne, er - aw crap, you know what I mean - bumping their heads?

Does it do it? Yes. Do they actually use that function? No.

You may be remembering when they got the new scoreboard, during the Red White game they used that a few times. Apparently they got some complaints (I don't know where I read that... on here? the Sun?) and their response basically was "we were just playing around with the new scoreboard and its features, sorry".

I'm surprised to hear about the new scoreboards, since they just replaced the end one a few years ago. And I have no idea how they'd get one in the center, unless its quite small and blocked by banners. But I'll withhold judgement until I see.

I'm pretty sure the current score board is set to read "stomp" and then "em." On nights where pregame beverage consumption had taken place I remember sarcastically yelling "stomp" followed by "em" as the board falshed those words. I can't imagine it would be as bad as the Meadowlands where it flashes "make some noise" followed by an image of a noise meter with fake cheering piped in over the sound system.

...as long as this score board doesn't block my view of those banners, I don't really care.

I just want to come here and defend BU fans. They are awesome. Loud and abrasive but absolutely believe in the spirit of "Keep it on the ice" that its so important. I'll take our Faithful any day, but B.U. has the second best group of fans that I've ever seen.

--- In the interest of full disclosure, my GF is a BU alum, but I've felt this way since that famous, to us, home and home series that happened a few years before I met her.

It used to be a lot of fun watching games at Walter Brown, and the BU crowd was good, but I'll take Matthews and the NU faithful for pound-for-pound crowd intensity. The BC crowd is just as lame and inert as Harvard's. It's 60 times larger, but 60 x 0 is still 0.

BTW, where is Age and where are the updates? I'm starting to worry...

I had the pleasure of passing Lynah today. Besides the heavy machinery, scaffolding, building materials, large holes in the ground, and fact that there are chunks of arena missing... I'd say we're pretty close to being done with renovations.

Also some more descriptive details of the rennovations. The seats on the West end "mezzanine" actually sounded cool, and the center-ice scoreboard was described as being smaller than the current scoreboard.

The current scoreboard is being moved to hang off the mezzanine (I hadn't realized there would be one!), thus the need for the center ice board for those who won't be able to see the current one.

The initial plan had no seating on the open end. True? The pdf now clearly designates "platform seating": [www.lynahrink.com]

Presumably they aren't going to have an overhang, like they do (did?) at Northeastern and Union. Tough visiting goaltender gig if they did.

I have seen it and it is an overhang. It actually looks like an industrial steel catwalk (bright red if I remember correctly). My biggest question is about the new seating in sections A-E. When I was walking around, it really seemed as though traffic will be completely cutoff at the top of A-E. Anyway, the tunnel is looking good.
