Re: Men's Lax Tournament 2024 - game times - 9 months ago
billhoward This year, Friday games are 6 and 8:30. When the day's temp will reach the high 70s in the afternoon. Won't be as nice Sunday, rain not (yet) forecast. I don't like that 1 v 4 is the late game and 2 v 3 is early. In the Northeast in early May temperatures usually are very comfortable at 6 PM. And the late start is a disadvantage when teams are evenly matched and young athletes needby Swampy - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2024 - 9 months ago
billhoward Right! The Omar Kanjis of the lacrosse world work just as hard as the starters and the stars. If their parents and siblings and girlfriend see them in a game for 5 minutes, it is worth a lot. I think it ripples back to the recruiting candidates about which are the teams you want to play for. And the non-stars will support Cornell lax as alumni. Not to mention the fact that today's noby Swampy - Other Sports

upprdeck All students get free bus passes all over the city now. you can bus up to EHP. Its not that far. compare it to many colleges. Look at PSU football. from the center of many of those dorms its a mile to the stadium. from the center of Cornell campus its just over a 1.5 miles to baseball. Look at Syracuse soccer/softball fields. Thats about 1.5 from center of campus as well.by Swampy - Other Sports

CU77 mike1960 For an ND broadcasting team, I thought they weren't too homerish I thought Booker and George (brothers, cousins of ND coach Kevin) did a great job, far superior to the Quint/Carc clown car. Booker does play-by-play for ESPN (when the clowns are elsewhere) and CBS, and IMO is always very good. Booker's company Corrigan Sports produced the event, which seems to have been a huge succesby Swampy - Other Sports

arugula BearLover Laughing at teams like BC/BU/NoDak/Quinnipiac losing just doesn’t hit the same when they’ve won national championships recently. (BU fans might try to claim 15 years is a long time, but to a Cornell fan it’s definitely not.) At the same time, each brutal loss by Cornell feels extra crushing because it’s been so long since we’ve won at hockey or lacrosse (“our sports,” as scoop85by Swampy - Hockey

I also think there's a great sense of accomplishment working one's way off the bench and onto the ice. I'd like to think everyone that Schafer recruits has this ethos that the journey is the destination.by Swampy - Hockey
Re: Men's Lax Syracuse at Cornell 4/2/2024 - 10 months ago
TimV Just grab him and hold him. Gently. Still, with only a few seconds to go, even a 3 minute penalty is inconsequential if it prevents the game tieing goal, right? Right. But all I'm saying is a blatant (aka "professional" foul is not without risk.by Swampy - Other Sports

ugarte ER Ugh please don’t turn this into basketball. The number one reason I don’t watch it.if there are 10 seconds left in a game, there's time to score a goal. if there are 4 seconds left on a restart, maybe not so much? we're not talking about 30 minutes of real time to play 2 minutes of action. There's no reason to allow a remotely decent shot in that little amount of time when the consequenby Swampy - Other Sports

scoop85 scoop85 One of the Colgate players in the portal is Ryan MGuire, Pierre’s son. Ryan had a productive sophomore year and I’m surprised he’s looking for greener pastures. I imagine he’ll have plenty of suitors. McGuire's going to Northeastern. This may be another way a weak ECAC affects the landscape. Players looking for greener pastures may be attracted by the alleged superiority of HEby Swampy - Hockey

scoop85 Swampy Scersk '97 scoop85 With no more games to focus on here’s a late season update for our listed recruits. We have plenty of talent in the pipeline: I have never seen us line up the talent at center that we seem to have and are bringing in. I have to assume some of those guys are going to be converted to wing, but my god. IIRC, Dan Lodboa was a forward when he came to Cornell,by Swampy - Hockey

mountainred Mr. Niss rss77 As pointed out in one of the Virginia papers he has access to scholarships and graduate transfers. So does every other non-Ivy school though. I wish Earl the best, but I don't get this move. The CAA is a step down conference-wise and W&M makes Cornell look like a basketball school. I wonder if Kevin App's name resurfaces. abmarks Jeff Hopkins '82 upprdeck We didn't need to win the conf title to get in with PWR if we don't blow any one of about 6 other games, ^^This^^ nope. it's the other way around. let's get cause and effect in proper order. Iceberg I find it crazy that the committee or whoever is responsible couldn't find another site in the midwestern US. There has to be a ton of better arenas willing to do this event at a tolerable cost. I think it has to do with who the host(s) is (are). In this case, the Midwest Regional is hosted by Lindenwood University and the St. Louis Sports Commission. What's even more surprising is tby Swampy - Hockey

Beeeej JasonN95 chimpfood Schafer quoted in the CHN article as saying “Im on the back 9 here.” Although it really isn’t a shock, it is sad to hear him say with the guy having been coach as long as I can remember. If I had to guess I would say he goes when these 10 freshman graduate. billhoward (I'm hoping Congresswoman Stefanik stays in that position and develops enough additional clout to bring wired internet and electricity along our road 15 miles outside LP that has it at both ends, but not the 250 yards in the middle. Re: Lake Placid-2024 - 11 months ago
billhoward St. Lawrence definitely helps attendance in Lake Placid. Clarkson a bit more. Clarkson 3700 students St. Lawrence 2200 students The best possible ECAC-in-Placid turnout would be Cornell, Clarkson, St. Lawrence and, um, pick one, maybe RPI. It is about 80 miles from Clarkson (+5 for St Lawrence) to Lake Placid but it is dark (well, yeah), twisty road that is not well-stripby Swampy - Hockey

upprdeck Would he get 250K is the question? What number is worth the move in non guaranteed money? 50K 100K 200k 500k Depends on what he intends to do with his Harvard degree. If he intends to play pro basketball or take over his uncle's chain of car dealerships, he should probably switch. If he intends to go to law school, maybe stay. dbilmes Stonehill is only in its second year as a DI program. At one point this season, both of their goalies were injured and a defenseman had to play goal. I like our chances.by Swampy - Hockey

Trotsky Huggy bear was garbage. It's not our bear; it's an inconsequential marketing gimmick from a period that was singularly soulless. This is our bear: When I started Cornell in 1964, I brought a bear sweatshirt home for my younger brother, who was nine. He really liked the bear, as I think most kids would. So, there's lots to be said for animalistic insignia. OTOH, my brother woby Swampy - Other Sports

BearLover chimpfood Nothing against sever or student athletes in general, I know how hard it is to balance sports and school, but it’s kinda funny that a 3.5 gpa wins scholar athlete of the year for the whole league. 3.5 in Engineering is like a 3.8 in another school though I think. IIRC, the GPA of my graduating class in Engineering in the late 1960s was 2.7.by Swampy - Hockey

sah67 Jacob MacDonald was profiled by a San Jose fan site as a model for the future of "position-less hockey" due to his versatility in shifting back and forth between forward and defenseman, even during a single game. Lots of good quotes from his coach (David Quinn) on that role as well: The subsequent waiving of JMD aside, it seems to me that, against Yale and Brown, Robinson wasby Swampy - Hockey
