Celebrini is scary. This was my point a few weeks ago. Obviously there is a chasm between the skill level of the NHL and college. Tonight you see part of that. BU has highly skilled individuals. We can win this but it has to be a tactical masterpiece and we just take advantage of the few chances we get.

On that goal, most of the Red abandoned the zone while the puck was still there. It was a 2 on 0 or 2 on 1 down low. Sloppy.

I think when they've had these games at MSG the rink staff just sticks to the NHL ice-cleaning rules for whatever reason -- 3 per period vs. 1 per period under NCAA rules. The stoppages were when they would've been for an NHL game.

Just wanted to highlight this. Was it a tactical masterpiece? No. But the D got their asses in line and Shane came up big where he had to. One particular toe save in the 3rd stood out to me. And the PP showed signs of actual creative movement. Keep that going.

I bought my ticket at 7:20pm. Available tickets at that time were very sparsely scattered across approximately a dozen sections, and I thought a majority of the tickets left were from resellers. They closed the extreme upper deck and bridge seats. It was much more full than in the recent past, and as noted the crowd was terrific.

I’m pretty sure that for MSG games, it’s just whatever is on the Jumbotron with the announcers audio piped in (hence the ugly power play/goal text animations, get loud animations, fan cam, and the random 20 second times with just the red hot hockey logo)

My confusion is that I was watching the ESPN+ broadcast and all I saw was Fan Cam. I scratched my bald head as I longed for the East Hill Car Wash jingle.
Was the game also on the MSG cable channel?
I’m pretty sure that for MSG games, it’s just whatever is on the Jumbotron with the announcers audio piped in (hence the ugly power play/goal text animations, get loud animations, fan cam, and the random 20 second times with just the red hot hockey logo)
I think that the explanation that MSG just treats the time outs as if it were an NHL game is the best explanation. I was simply wondering why there were so many time outs.

That is a great write up. Good job to those writers.David Harding

And the Cornell highlight crew did a great job here!
The post game interview is worth a watch too.

Just back from MSG and watching some of the broadcast on demand. God I Love Bernie Corbett.
Terrific crowd if well below a sellout.
That’s the thing. They didn’t sell the blue seats or the bridge so available seats were mostly sold but they didn’t sell whole building. Attendance was around 15,200. Building holds 18,200 for hockey. More than good enough.
My daughter got her pair late yesterday in the lower bowl for below face.

We can win this but it has to be a tactical masterpiece and we just take advantage of the few chances we get.
Just wanted to highlight this. Was it a tactical masterpiece? No. But the D got their asses in line and Shane came up big where he had to. One particular toe save in the 3rd stood out to me. And the PP showed signs of actual creative movement. Keep that going.
I was wrong. We picked up our forecheck and played more aggressively and lo and behold were able to keep up. Shane was great. The pp finally got out of its own way.

Thoughts about Caron? It was an interesting reversal. In the past two years we would dominate Brown and Caron would keep them
close. Today BU mostly controlled the first two half of the game and Shane kept us close.

The defense is maturing nicely. As I said last week, it's got to be a bear to feel everything needs work. There are a finite number of practice hours in a week.

That makes sense. It's in the contract.
I started watching Ranger hockey at MSG in the mid-50s. In those days, four guys on skates, with those plow-like shovels, would clear the snow off the ice. They were followed by another four guys on skates pushing two ice-making contraptions. They were essentially 55-gallon drums on wheels or skids that spread water on the cleared ice. Zambonis were in general use everywhere else, so why not at MSG? I was told it was because of a union contract.

I thought it was a great crowd. Does Cornell bring recruits to MSG? Would like to think it helps up Cornell’s appeal. Some random observations from the game:
Shortly after Walsh’s tying goal Cornell had to play defense with one stickless player and a one legged skater because the former’s stick got harpooned through the skate blade hole of the latter. I’ve watched a lot of hockey and don’t remember seeing that happen to teammates before.
Also, unless I missed one, there were no shots off the pipes or crossbar. That struck me for some reason. Maybe in my head I think hitting the iron happens more than it does.
There’s no doubt that Schafer still has a fire in his belly. He left the ice for a moment after meeting with BU’s coaches and as he headed for the door he did a fist pump and then a full throated “yeah!” or roar (no way to hear what came out of his mouth but he put all his lungs into it).

Caron played well but Shane was definitely better. The former has gotten some criticism from BU folks this season and I'm not convinced he doesn't give up more goals if Cornell doesn't have more quality opportunities during the game. He let up some rebounds that a Cornell player either overskated or the puck was bouncy and it was hard to finish. Either way, I'm sure he's glad to play in front of a talented BU team rather than whatever teams Brown had managed to muster during his years in Providence

Unorganized notes:
Crowd was great
Ian Shane for Hobey
Goal line clearance in the first period was incredible
Shane lost his stick like three times and scrambled quickly to grab it. I’m still scarred from Scrivens letting a goal in that way but Shane is clearly just a faster skater.
I wonder what coach said during the first intermission. Or BU got gassed…. Because the second period was SO much better. Our guys are fast and big and when they’re hustling it’s a sight to see.
The first power play has a lovely shot up the middle, following some quick puck movement, that gave me hope.
They were SO excited to win that game. Love to see it. Screw BU.

They were probably the same guys who shoveled up the elephant shit when the circus came to MSG.
BTW, I’m referring to the prior incarnation of MSG.
Like many other New Yorkers, my family moved to Nassau County in the early 50s. Some of my high school friends and I would get a ride to 179th Street in Queens and catch the subway to MSG. The old Garden had a true balcony with general admission seating. Tickets were $2.50 — $1.25 with a student ID.
First row seats were terrific, but some guys from Jersey would get there earlier and stake out the whole row at center ice for their friends. We sat in the second row. Who’s going to argue with some guys from Jersey?
How fortunate I was to get accepted at a school with a hockey team, although mediocre until god appeared in Ithaca in 1963!

Nicely done. The game winner was a beauty.
Hopefully, this will be the start of a nice run for Psenicka.

I meant televised on actual TV. The games on ESPN+ tend to have one commercial timeout per period. Games on actual TV tend to have three commercial timeouts per period (at least pro games and college games in the NCAA tournament). Tonight’s game had three per period.
Speaking about the ads, why were there no Cornell ads? In the past, the school ads were split evenly between both schools. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a single Cornell ad shown last night.

They showed one on the jumbotron right before the anthem but that's it. Also, they didn't show any famous or notable administrators or alumni from either school except Mike Eruzione. I guess Moore, Pollack, etc. decided to skip the game this year?

I’m very happy Cornell won last night and I had a great time at the game. But the performance did not inspire confidence for the rest of the year. Looking at the chances Cornell gave up, BU easily could have had four or five goals. Even though Cornell did finally score on the PP, it came when a puck popped out to Walsh from the half-wall, rather than set up by a passing play. The PP did look somewhat better but it still needs to vastly improve. I think the game would have been very ugly if not for Shane.

It was a great crowd and atmosphere at MSG. 15,289 was an excellent turnout. St. John's basketball drew 14,188 when they played Michigan at MSG two weeks ago. Great comments by Mike in the postgame on alumni support.
