I get the Clarkson/Cole park of this, but the syphillis part eludes me. Anyone want to explain this?

See, and here I had no idea who Erik Cole was, but figured he must've gone to Clarkson to have gotten syphilis (I checked the spelling guide)

I went to see "Wordplay," that white-hot Shortzian worship docu-epic sweeping the land, and when they introduced the guy from Colorado (who wound up making the crossword finals), there were some photographs of his family. I'm fairly certain that one of his sons was wearing a Frozen Four shirt from Buffalo. It was partially obscured, but it definitely said "Frozen" at the top and "Buf..." at the bottom.

And I got excited that I saw that.
