So do crease violations only happen in the ECAC?  I know the NHL changed the rules to make Dallas's Cup appear legit, but I thought that in college you were still not allowed to be in the crease before the puck.  And even if there's some crap about being irrelevant to the play, this guy was setting a screen inside the crease. :-(

I don't think its irrelevant to the play, I think its "not interfering with" or some such. What standard that means exactly is unclear.

harvard looked pretty flat the entire game and only in the last 5 minutes did they show any shreds of desperation, which lead to a ton of shots and a good amount of pressure. the key to beating harvard is to score early and keep a tight D on. the TV reported that only twice in their last 10 games have they managed more than 2 goals (including tonight).

I believe it was this year that the NCAA changed the rules to be more in line with those of the NHL. I think they are not supposed to call in the crease unless it affects the goalies ability to make a save.

Given the ECAC's more defensive style of hockey, and given that we've (as a conference) had some of the best goalies in college hockey over the past ~5 years (East 1st and 2nd team AA last year including two Hobey finalists, East 1st team AA in 2004 including a Hobey finalist, East 1st team AA in 2003 including a guy who should've won the Hobey, East 1st and 2nd team AA in 2002), it seems logical that the ECAC might choose to interpret a rule in a manner that would play to the strengths of that talent base, thereby increasing the profile of those players, thereby increasing the profile of the league.

In that case, what does the crease matter?  You can't interfere with the goalie inside the privileged area at all, right?
