[Q2]But this by definition should depend on the discretion of the people who are actually on the committee anyway. How much turnover has there been since 2003? [/Q]
I can't speak to turnover, but USCHO does list the current members:
Wayne Dean (Yale asst. AD - chair)
Tim Dillon (Canisius AD)
Ron Grahame (Denver asst. AD)
Ron Mason (Michigan State AD)
Marty Scarano (New Hampshire AD)
Frank Serratore (Air Force coach)[/q]
Dillon recently resigned (pushed out?) from Canisius.

[q]Dillon recently resigned (pushed out?) from Canisius. [/q]I'd forgotten that.  Does that mean he gets replaced on the committee by someone else from Canisius (acting AD?), someone else from Atlantic Hockey or does the committee ust drop to 5 for the remainder of this season?

[q]Yup, that's exactly it. The committee got tired of the selection show having no drama at all. You can consider it childish if you want, or at the very least silly, but the committee wanted people tuning in not knowing what would happen.

If your big job every year was to make one announcement, and everyone already knew what you would say every year, you might get a little annoyed by it too. They threw it in to have some 'drama' on selection day. I believe they've pretty much said as much. [/q]I have to think that's the primary reason for the bonus.  But it seems a silly one to me.  The point of the selection show is to generate interest for the sport.  Those who are "in the know" (that is, read USCHO or whatever enough to know the process and can pick the field in advance) are llikely to be interested in the selection show anyway.  The casual fan, the one who the ESPN exposure is supposed to capture, probably isn't in the know and therefore doesn't see a lack of mystery.

A transparent, pbjective system for determining bids and #1 seeds is extremely desirable (even if we can argue over the merits of the objective measures employed).  Why sacrifice some transparency for the sake of "mystery"?  I wonder if ESPN ever asked for it (or insinuated that they wanted some)?

That is not the primary reason for the bonus - or any of the reason for the bonus.  It is the primary reason, however, for keeping its details secret.

Not at all.  The process is still a mystery to ESPN, with or without the bonus :)

Frankly, I've never thought there was much excitement to having "mystery" in the selection show.  If I watch the selection show at all, it's to get an analysis of the first-round match-ups and hear some inevitable incorrect information about Cornell.

So can we just replace your post with:

< insert obligatory suck up to Adam and knock of the other guy > ? ;)

Beeeej

Heh!  I guess so - though I haven't actually watched the selection show since before Adam was on it.
