Bizarrely, NCAA Division I hockey players can maintain eligibility after playing in pro leagues if they were not compensated beyond "actual and necessary expenses" (meals, lodging, gear). Players must not have signed a professional contract or received a salary, focusing instead on amateur, expense-only agreements.

Wouldn't he have had to sign a contract if he played a full season in the ECHL?

Theoretically we could have a guy in the NCAA who played in the NHL.  The CHL allows players to go to the N as long as they stay under x number of game, 5 I think.  And then we could have that CHL player return to his team and then go to college.
