2023 NCAA 1R: Cornell vs Denver

In my opinion, the biggest reason Cornell won was that they played incredible defense with their sticks. They gave Denver almost no shooting or passing lanes below the blue line the entire game. And Cornell used its size to win battles on the boards. One advantage Cornell should have against these young teams with elite skill is that Cornell is bigger and stronger. I am worried that there won't be as many struggles on the boards against BU, which will try to strike more quickly in transition.

People are gonna keep talking about our defense, and rightly so, but what struck me was how many times we were just plain old faster on puck races.

The Big Red came out aggressive, flying, winning battles to loose picks, and putting its textbook forecheck to work. All the while, they frustrated Denver, the defending national champs. Which is not to say, of course, that they neglected the defensive end, obviously. They shut out one of the top scoring teams in the country. At one point Cornell held the Pioneers without a shot for 15 minutes.
