Discretionary Awards

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award, Career Improvement. This award is open to seniors or, in the rare case, juniors. The award measures how well the player has improved since starting at Cornell.

Randy MacFarlane-Riley Nash Award, Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess. The title says it all.

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award, Scrappiness and Effort. This award generally goes to a player who plays "bigger than his size" or "better than his talent."

Terry Gage Award, Determination in a Supporting Role. This award generally goes to an athlete whose contributions do not show up in the box score.

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award, Leadership and Passion. This award needs no explanation.

Pierre Belanger-Murphy Family Award, Most Loathed Referee.

John Carter-Dominic Moore Award, Most Respected Opponent. This award goes to the guy we would take in a heartbeat for one of our own. It is based on his performance against us in games this year.

Kevan Melrose-Matt Nickerson Award, Least Respected Opponent. This award goes to the guy who when you scream "... sucks!" you mean it. The goon, the cheap shot artist, the whiner, the showboat. The asshole.

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award, Most Valuable Freshman. Define it however you want. Open only to freshman, not transfers.

Joe Nieuwendyk-Doug Murray Award, Most Valuable Player. Define it however you want, as long as you consider this year's performance alone.

Well, he did only have the second-best GAA and save % on the team. ;)

Discretionary Awards

Career Improvement - Joe Scali. He wasn't even starting every night until his junior season. Talk about a guy who got the most out of Cornell and the Schafer system. His skating (treadmill, anyone?) has improved tremendously, and he's a monster forechecker and penalty killer. Would have loved to see him finish some of those 2-on-1s, but that's not his strong suit.

Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess - Riley Nash. You've seen him dance around defenders and roll ankles around the boards behind the net.

Scrappiness and Effort - Joe Scali. Can't say enough in favor of Scali. Every night, who tries harder? Greening maybe, but that's it.

Determination in a Supporting Role - Scali.

Leadership and Passion - Colin Greening, by a mile. No one else looked like a leader out there this season.

Most Loathed Referee - Joe Carusone

Most Respected Opponent - Jack Parker and his GENIUS pull the goalie strategy to get a 6x3

Least Respected Opponent - Burgdoerfer, still

Most Valuable Freshman - Nick D'Agostino

Most Valuable Player - Greening. Not only for what he does personally, but as others have pointed out, he makes everyone around him better. Just look at the lines this season. The issue was not really where to put Riley Nash, but whom to put with Greening. With Greening, Gallagher and Devin looked great; without him, Gallagher tailed off a little and Devin tailed off a lot. Without Greening, Riley had a disappointing first half of the season. With Greening, he averaged like 1.5 points per game. When Greening and his line is effectively shut down, the whole team seems to struggle.

He'd probably be honored and RPI will greatly miss him next season, but he didn't have a single penalty against Cornell this year. He also cut his penalty minutes down overall from 106 to 51.

Peter Natyshak-Sam Paolini Award, Career Improvement. Ben Scrivens

Randy MacFarlane-Riley Nash Award, Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess. I guess I'll go with Riley. I only saw the team live in Estero, and no one was really skating well that week. Redcast video doesn't do justice to anyone's skating.. they all have choppy strides ;-).

Dave Shippel-Greg Hornby Award, Scrappiness and Effort. Joe Scali

Terry Gage Award, Determination in a Supporting Role. Justin Krueger

Mike Schafer-Stephen Bâby Award, Leadership and Passion. Colin Greening. Greening scored a goal in Estero against CC that captures it all. Came out of the box after serving a penalty, got the puck and just forced himself into the CC end and buried the puck in the net. Grit, determination and finished the job.

John Carter-Dominic Moore Award, Most Respected Opponent. Yale. For the past several years, they have a plan and execute almost to perfection giving us the "L" and them the "W".

Doug Dadswell-Ryan Vesce Award, Most Valuable Freshman. Nick D'Agostino, points from the blue line and he stays out of the penalty box.

Joe Nieuwendyk-Doug Murray Award, Most Valuable Player. Colin Greening.
