Thank you.  I didn't realize some people complain when there's only a link.  I realize the intentions are usually pure, but it's technically a copyright violation to post the full text.  Anyway - thanks again.

People complain when there's not text when it's a site you have to register at... NY Times, Washington Post, Wall St Journal. Yeah, that's technically copyright, but I don't think forums have ever been gone after for it.

For for an article for USCHO, it's not necessary :-).

There's a third option, which has the advantage of being "technically" legal, which is to paraphrase the article rather than copying the whole thing.

I feel a discussion on copyright law coming on.  Perhaps we need a 'Paraphrase This Message' button just like 'Quote this message'.  It would then proceed to leave in only every fourth word or something like that.  Are people who take facts and analyze them on here or who take facts and add opinions writing material that could be copyright protected if they wanted it to be.

I would suspect, without first-hand knowledge, that USCHO would like to keep track of page hits for overall interest in a site, interest in a specific month (important in the slower season even if there is no offseason for USCHO) and interest in a specific author and posting the whole article would take away some of those hits from people who otherwise support the site and the author 12 months a year.

Not to mention advertizing.  There is no dead tree edition of USCHO (okay, there's a magazine, but that's not what's keeping them afloat), so ads are the only place they get money from, and if people copy their articles wholesale, those who read them don't see the ads that paid for the article in the first place.

Nice piece. More to the point than some of the other stuff on USCHO (all writers; no one in particular) or, say, the discourse that ran in the Schenectady paper recently that in 20 paragraphs essentially said three our four schools are mulling what they'll do and the local guy on the hockey committee is quoted as saying they'll give it all thoughtful consideration.

That's a problem when a newspaper doesn't have someone assigned full time to college hockey. In fact, I don't think anyone has that, not even the Boston Globe.

That's what makes the Web all the more valuable - readership doesn't have to be limited to one paper's geographic area.
