This according to insidecollegehockey.com.  This will drastically effect Ohio State's performance this year, which of course includes a visit to Lynah.

From that article -

"Where Umberger will play in 2003-04 is more of a mystery, but it won't be in Columbus. He's still unsigned by the Vancouver Canucks, who took him in the first round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, but he was removed from the Buckeyes' roster on Monday."

Still, even without Kesler, and now Umberger, they will have played in FOURTEEN games (+ an exhibition) by the time they come into Lynah. That's twice as many as we will have played. Of course, their "head start" didn't matter last year. And that was in Columbus :)

Maybe he plans on joining Maurice's lawsuit and enter the NFL draft. :-P

Hey, now don't underestimate the old Bentley Falcons; they've got a BUNCH of returning players! ;-)

The article sort of addresses what is going on here, but not really.  Is Umberger leaving the team to avoid injury?  Because he would lose eligibility (and possibly cause the team to forfeit games) if he negotiates during the season? Because he has already crossed a line that the NCAA says he can't?

Either way, he was a non-entity in the BC-OSU game in Providence last year.

Yeah, but he scored 100% of tOSU's goals vs. CU last year (2 G in 2 games) and from what I remember from the radio broadcasts, his name was called often.  It was a challenge to stop him on both sides of the ice.

OSU always seems to lose a key player, then beat us. IIRC they have had injuries or WJC defections right before our last two losses against them.
