Story behind the chain?

Does anyone know the story behind and the significance of the piece of chain the team passed around before the OT started on Saturday night during the Colgate game? I had not noticed it before.

If you didn't see it, the chain looked like it was perhaps a 12" - 18" length of pretty thick chain link. It was passed along the bench, and every player (or almost every player) handled it briefly.

I'm guessing this was the first time this was done at a home game, because if it wasn't I'm even less observant than people say I am. (I sit two rows behind the Cornell bench.)

So...does anyone know the significance?
