QuoteJacques Martin will be back with the Florida Panthers next season, but Joe Nieuwendyk will not.

Sources says Nieuwendyk, who held the title of Special Consultant to the General Manager, tendered his resignation earlier this week.

While Nieuwendyk is the last type of person who would throw bombs on his way out the door, sources say he was "extremely disillusioned" with the direction the franchise was taking under owner Alan Cohen and GM-head coach Martin, who this week was directed by Cohen to give up the coaching portfolio to concentrate exclusively on managing the team.

It's not clear whether Nieuwendyk resigned after finding out Martin would be back as GM or if it was in the works before that. But those who know Nieuwendyk are quick to point out he did not covet the GM's job and was not interested in assuming that responsibility. But neither, apparently, was he interested in being part of an organization that he didn't feel was moving in the right direction.

Cohen told south Florida media that he would be meeting with Martin to discuss the succession plan behind the bench, but that Martin will be returning as GM.

I wonder if he'd be interested in an AD position...

am I the only one whose first reaction to this title was "WOW... I hope everyone else got off the ship, and did it actually sink?"

I guess I need to think outside the box more.

I'm just glad that the SS Florida Panther took out the Hurricanes before it sank.
