Hockey / Re: The New Cowbell Guy
March 14, 2010, 09:27:34 PM
Quote from: RobertSchurHello everyone!  As Elie mentioned, my name is Robert Schur and I am the new cowbell guy, here to introduce myself.

A little about me: I'm a sophomore history major in the College of Arts and Sceiences.  Outside of Lynah and the classroom, I work as a campus tour guide and am also a newscaster, sportscaster and DJ on WVBR 93.5 FM, also serving on the station's executive committee as outgoing News Director and soon to be Vice President of Staff and Facilities.

My love of hockey runs deep, back to the years of my dad waking me up at 5:30 A.M. for house league practices on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  He coached all of my teams until I finally gave up playing after freshman year of high school to focus more on academics, thus ostensibly leading to my admission to Cornell. I'm originally form Highland Park, Illinois near Chicago but have never been a fan of the Blackhawks.  Dollar Bill Wirtz's refusal to put home games on television drove my dad and me to the Chicago Wolves, of the old IHL and now the AHL, winners of two Turner Cups and two Calder Cups.  In the NHL, I cheer for the Tampa Bay Lightning as my grandparents live in Southwest Florida. When visiting them, my parents would bring me to their games.  I actually attended my first Cornell hockey game the year the NHL was on strike at the Florida College Classic.

I am truly honored and flattered that I have been entrusted with the cowbell for the next two years.  I will be traveling to as many away games as possible with some combination each time of my three closest friends who attend games with me: Nischay Rege, Mike Motley and Matt Horvath, all sophomores as well.  In the event that I cannot make a game, these three gentlemen are prepared to assume duties for an evening.  We practiced last night after the game with a drumstick and plastic cup that is now severely cracked.

I look forward to meeting all of you in the coming years, perhaps even in Albany next weekend.

Enjoy it.  You'll have twice the fun at Cheel and Starr, you'll be extra popular there.

We will all again be basking in the surreal aura that is CORNELL BIG RED HOCKEY.  Nothing unites Cornellians (except for maybe dunbars, which has DEFINITLY inspired this post right now) more than the hallowed grounds of Lynah rink... an adrenaline rush like no there.  This is our place on earth.

One day a naive "facetimer" comes to his first game.  Opponents for the today: crimson of harvard. Just his luck, he has stepped right into a bloodboath.  THe crowd shows up (on time), makes noise, and are in some way bonded to each through a frentic lunacy best known to the lynah faithful.  We are in the zone.  This, as his first game, has him instantly mesmerized by the passion, LOUDNESS, intensity, energy and SPIRIT in our holy battleground.  For this is where we do WAR, the Cornell faithful come prepared, with jerseys, signs, COWBELLS, shirts, hats, newspapers, video cameras, PEP BANDS, and the most, raucous, witty, and create the most electrified feeling in all of sports.  Ken Dryden used to skate down there... so did Joey-N, Dan Lodboa, Brock Tredway, and hundreds of legends passed.

Paying no regard for his real "seat" the facetimer is making his presence felt ON the ice and in the stands.  The Lynah Faithful CAN change the outcome of a game.  In fact, in this game, they just willed a fresh-legged Mike Kennedy off the bench and into a rush...3rd period, Cornell down by 1 to its arch rival at home... clock running down... he dekes, the chrow is already on its feet, deaf with anticipation... Now only one man to beat... Richter steps out... Kennedy makes his move, shoots...

Hockey / Re: Harvard Post-game

I was a little disappointed at the turnout - there were still quite a few empty seats and I was shocked to hear that tix were available up until 1pm on Friday. I remember being so crunched in for Harvard games that you had to stand sideways to fit everyone in the section. It's an absolute outrage how badly the Athletic Dept. has handled this situation. When I was an undergrad we had that streak of sellouts dating back to Alabama-Huntsville.
Part of the difference has to be the addition over 400 seats in the last renovation.
The number of student seats sold by Athletics hasn't changed with the renovation, so there truly is a problem.
I'd say the crowd at Cheel has been more raucous than Lynah for at least 2 years now.

Cornell dominated a very young Harvard game. Overall a great game.  Greening looked absolutely amazing.

Hockey / Re: A note about the Cowbell
November 15, 2008, 03:15:36 PM
Playing the cowbell is definitely harder than people think.  In addition to getting the rhythm down, it is tough to contend with the PA announcer, any obnoxious music the arena is playing, and even our own Pep Band.  Not to mention, standing in front of thousands of people (some of whom absolutely hate you and can't wait to find you after the game in parking lot, read: Colgate) isn't always the most enviable task.

As Mitch said, Elie is a passionate and devoted fan, and I'm sure the bell will be in good hands.  As Mitch alluded to, I will forewarn you as well that the cowbell can be both a blessing and a curse.

And while Elie is surely a worthy successor, I don't see any reason why multiple people can't at times share the duty.  Last year, Age played the bell @ SLU when I had a sore throat, Ari played it @ Princeton (I think), another friend of mine played it @ Lynah once, and my Dad even gave it a whack @ Estero.

Assuming I can get the time off work, I'm hoping to come up next weekend for the Harvard game.  Hopefully I will see some of you then, but until then, LETS GO RED.

Hockey / Shots discrepency

Am I remembering this right, or isn't Colgate the wacky rink that records "saves" and not "shots" on the scoreboard?  Perhaps that could have caused some of the confusion... always pissed me off, ALMOST as much as the big red chewing gum and free pizza give aways.  Although hey, at least we brought our jerseys this game.

Did anyone take note of the PP or PK lines?  Im guessing the PP1 line has to be Greening, R. Nash, Gallagher, B. Nash, and... ?

Hockey / Re: princeton tickets
August 13, 2008, 08:43:22 PM
Last year was the only year in the past 4 where tickets have been popular there, most likely due to the success of their team, that being said I ended up giving away some extras I had before the game and they were selling standing room tickets through at least the first period.

I always used to get tickets from the Cornell box office directly, although you can certainly get them from Princeton as well, like Keith said.  Either way the tickets most likely won't get sent until the weeks before the game and you shouldn't have any trouble getting a seat.

Hockey / OT: Graduation Day
May 25, 2008, 09:06:58 PM
Cornell Hockey has been the one constant in my four years here.  Good week or bad week, in Ithaca or on the road, looking forward to Friday and Saturday night hockey is part of what made these the best four years of my life.

I really thought the 04-05 team had a chance to win it all, and my sophomore year I saw us come one Dan Glover crossbar shot away from a frozen four- I guess I am now just another member of the Alumni faithful who were hopeful of a national championship.

I wanted to thank the good people around Cornell Hockey, you guys (and others), for making this so much fun.  Your passion, energy, and commitment is contagious and I am grateful for all the memories- I hope to become as dedicated of an alumnus.

Let's Go Red.

I hope the team is able to make major adjustments before Friday, we were outworked, outcoached, and outplayed all 6 periods.
