Hockey / Elmira...
October 25, 2009, 10:16:15 PM
Unfortunately (or fortunately... depending from what angle) I am no longer in the So. Tier.  It was a great three years for sure, but I have moved on.  That being said, my former intern from Cornell (no jokes please) is employed at WETM as their weekend meteorologist, so Cornell is still represented quite well in their weather department.

And Kyle can make fun of the forecasting skills all he wants... I know he still tuned in ;-)

I have absolutely no problem dropping the issue...  I just felt the need to defend myself from some pretty nasty things that were being said, and I'd prefer to nip any rumors in the bud before they spread even further.

To Kyle...  I'm sorry that I do not even remember the discussion.  You have to forgive me, because when I was in Elmira, I would have conversations with dozens of people per day on a wide variety of topics and years later, it's all just mish-mashed together.

The only Lenny story I ever like to tell is of the morning skate before the Red/White game when he and I played rebound against each other and I won.  It's really a self-depracting thing since he was already a second round pick, and I like to put myself down by saying my greatest achievement in hockey was beating Lenny in a meaningless game at a meaningless practice before a different meaningless game.  Perhaps I mentioned that?

I get the feeling that we will not come to an agreement here, but I think things were becoming a bit malicious towards me, with implications that anywhere I go, I tout myself as an alum of the varsity team, when it simply is just not the case.

At this point, I'm ready to move past this whole issue.

This is Scott...

I have never, ever claimed to have been a varsity player at Cornell, nor would I ever do so.  I have waaaaaay to much respect for the program to ever pull any garbage like that.
I have always said that the extent of my varsity experience was the red/white game my senior year, and I was very grateful to Coach Schafer for giving me that opportunity to participate.  Incidentally, Lenny didn't even play that game...  Marr and Chabot played.
I am also very proud of my time as one of the pioneers of Cornell's ACHA program (which as I see are still unbeaten this year).  My email address remains 'cornellclubhockey' to this day.
As far as my ECHL experiences... I have had the fortune of being an emergency backup for three teams in my life... but it's nothing more than being a warm body in practice and a safety net on the bench.  I'd love for someone to produce any program from any game that I did sit for, because they all clearly list my previous team as Cornell-ACHA.  I was actually quite adament that they included the ACHA as to make sure it was accurate and not misleading.
It's funny all the parallels in life, just like when I used to be a broadcaster for the weather... you say one thing, but people hear something completely different and when it doesn't add up, they make you out to be a villian.

I think it's unfair to bash the Isles for not calling him up sooner.  Maybe his success is based on the fact that he has had so much time in the A to work on his skating and physical game?

That being said, it's great seeing him get the chance to play at the top level.  And having watched a few Isles games recently, I think they have a very interesting future.

I have to ask, and I may seem stupid depending on the answer...

Let's say from the class of '03 on... have any ECAC schools produced more NHLers than Cornell?

25... It depends.  Look and Lunqvist and DiPietro.  DP is 26 and Lundqvist is 25.

As for Tim Thomas... he was never a prospect.  He got a change though and ran with it.  Ryan Miller... he was still looked favorably by his management and got chances with the same organization.

Lenny will have to find another franchise willing to invest in him and take a chance.  That won't be easy.  With the experienced tenders out there and the never-ending stream of prospects, it just won't happen.

Look at Yann Danis... his AHL numbers have been outstanding.  He got a shutout in his first NHL game, and he is still below Carey Price and others on Montreal's depth chart.  (and to be fair, I think Danis' numbers were more impressive than Lenny's in college.  He played on a MUCH weaker team).

It's a tough prospect getting into and stayin in the NHL as a goaltender.  There are only 60 spots for the entire world to fill.

Hate to say it, but I think Lenny's days as a bonafide NHL prospect are over.  I don't think any team is going to pick up on an aging career AHLer who hasn't shown once that he can handle the NHL game, even given many opportunities.

Teams pay for housing, so I am sure he will be switching apartments with whoever is coming the other way.

Anyone notice that Dougy Murray is 4th in the NHL in +/-!
