Hockey / Re: Clarkson at Cornell postgame
February 03, 2007, 01:14:03 AM
Overall, a great game. We dominated on faceoffs and the guys won a lot of the small battles for the puck along the boards. I did think that Clarkson checked harder than we did, but our guys kept up their speed and intensity. It was lots of fun to watch. Great crowd again tonight- I talked with some Clarkson students who came to Lynah for the first time on the way out and they were saying how impressed they were.

Regarding the penalties, it seemed like Hansen cared more about keeping chances even than calling what happened. The Sawada tripping was crap- I couldn't even tell if he made contact there. Right before the holding the stick call two of our players were dragged down along the end boards. Also, as Krantz was skating off with the linesman for the holding the stick penalty, the linesman told him the penalty was for throwing the stick (after the Clarkson guy hooked him, the stick was lodged in Krantz's arm and instead of letting it drop he kinda twirled and the stick was thrown) so that was the justification there.

For those that know what I'm talking about, it really felt like watching a video game match of NHL 94 with all the wraparound goals. Leggio was awful at guarding the post. Wonder if that was stressed in scouting reports.

Hockey / Re: Cornell 11 York 1

I think I saw Scali make an awkward hit in front of the bench and come away favoring his shoulder. No idea if anything happened to Carefoot.

Tough to take anything away from this. Another team would've taken advantage of defensive lapses. The offense showed real creativity tonight though, and it's great to see goals from 10 different players. It seems that they were taking better shots than last year, when it looked like they would just put the puck into the opposing goalie's chest. They hit a lot of corners and had some pretty passes. I can't really say whether we looked good or York just made us look good, but if this keeps up, it will be an exciting season to watch, one way or another.
There's also the issue of people having another person grab a second number for them, sufficiently far away from their first number that they're nearly guaranteed to have one number chosen.

This didn't even cross my mind until I heard about someone who did this.
I thought of this too. However, I think when you sign up online you agree to have your bursar charged if your ticket is picked. So it would take a really good friend to have him (or usually parents) front the money. And even if you could find one person to help, you couldn't find 5 or 6 for a group of friends.

Picked up my number at 2:00 on Friday. 226 senior/ 581 overall. This is much lower than what I had expected.

It might be wishful thinking but maybe the fact that there's no race to get into a line or competition might weed out facetimers on its own. This year, there's nothing special about getting tickets other than being lucky so it's less flashy and "cool". It's just about wanting to see hockey. I'm sure the price also has a lot to do with it. Or, of course, people might just be procrastinating until Monday and Tuesday and the number might go sky high. At least for now I feel much better about my chances than I did when the system was announced.

I'm not a huge fan of Argentina, but I don't understand why their game with the Netherlands was a joke. That was simply a case of both teams making it to the next round so they sat their best players,

You may be referring to the card-fest that the Netherlands played against Portugal in the round of 16. Portugal in my mind is a mess and I'll be rooting hard against them the rest of the way- at least in the game against England, the referee caught most of the theatrics and called a fair game.

Soccer needs a diving call, or an 'excessive injury' call like (american footballs) excessive celebration.
There is in fact a rule that any player diving gets a yellow card. The problem is the ref's don't use it often enough. If they were stronger with it, the game would be a lot more enjoyable. Watching the teams that don't roll around and cover their faces after the slightest touch has been much more fun than the other games.

I forget where I read it (though I think it was SkySports' website) but apparently the refs were told before the tournament to clamp down and give reds for any two-footed spikes up tackle and that's why the call on Mastroeni was made. Sure it was a makeup call, but I think most foreigners view that call as correct.
5+ minutes left in the game.

I really worry about our low goal production, vs. a red-hot Sucks team that scored 10 goals today.    ::help::
During the intermission, Wodon made it sound like the high score was a case of Devine and Dartmouth just not showing up tonight, not necessarily Harvard becoming amazing.

But yeah, 10 goals is scary no matter what excuses you can create.

The Allaccess audio feed is working so we can work with that until the video comes back.

Mine too. And I just bought the damn thing for this game since I'm sick and can't make the trip up. Now I know what you've all been complaining about all season.
The penalty you are talking about was the worst call i've seen this year. Paul Martin dove to poke the puck down the ice just killing a penalty not trying to draw a hooking penalty.
Thanks. I had a bad view of those near side boards so I couldn't see it well.

And I've been to plenty of terribly attended Devils games, but I don't think the crowd there could have filled Lynah. Of course, NHL.com has the official attendance at 10,039, but the arena looked ~20% full. Stupid that they're spending the money for a new arena. If people don't go to the Meadowlands, can't see that they're going  to go to Newark.

To put this thread back on track, LeNeveu is at .905, 3.06 since going back to San Antonio. Not so stellar, but it's not like he has a D to help him out. Similar numbers to Danis (.903, 2.73) and Jimmy Howard (.900, 2.76)

Saw Nieuwendyk in NJ tonight, and although he's had some great games recently, the Devils held him shotless. It also seemed like he got a lot less ice time than some of the other Panthers- disappointing because I picked the game to see him, although Elias returned and had a great night so that was nice. In a REALLY small crowd, I saw at least two Cornell jerseys and set next to a Quinnipiac fan who wouldn't stop talking about Cashman.

My question of the game is why do referees give coincidental diving and hooking (in this case) penalties? I've seen it happen a few times and tonight it looked as if a hooking call was going to cut short a Florida 5x3 until the Devils player got called for a dive. Is it because the diving player exaggerates even when there is an actual penalty? Hopefully someone here can enlighten me.

In the event of a shootout, both teams officially get the tie right? I was under the impression that the shootout was just for the fans and to officially declare a tourney winner, but for the purpose of RPI and PWR, it was a tie.

Hockey / Re: CU vs. Princeton Post-game

McKee was OK except for the fluke. There were two quality Princeton chances- one brakeaway and one nasty slop shot that he made a great save on. All I care about is that McKee plays well enough for us to win and he certainly did that tonight. I thought Krantz played better than I have remembered and that our PP was pretty good tonight.

Princeton is a terrible team but we played a good game. The team was clicking tonight. They just need to keep it up.
