Thanks for the well wishes.  Next year if you want to cut through Barton and there is a track meet in progress, and there are people wearing green uniforms with a large D on them, go to the throwers cage and say hi to Corinne.

I know what you mean about cutting through Barton.  To get from my U-Hall to Teagle for practice I would walk through the Campus Store, Statler, Barton, and across the street to Teagle. Didn't know about the tunnel then.

Three years ago I posted this in reference to my daughter.  (I re-discovered this on a Google search.)  I got my answer, and it is yes.  She will be throwing for Dartmouth in the fall.  I'm very proud of her, although I wish she wound up at Cornell.  I can't argue much about her choice though.

I've gotten my share of free tickets and heavily discounted tix at Baker Rink as well.  Just hang around the ticket booth area and look like you need tickets.  Look out for people giving them away or trying to dump extras.

I'm a satellite person (DISH), and my package doesn't include ESPNU.  Nice job, FoxNY.

Yeah, if he were a running back he would be credited with 7 yards rushing.

Other Sports / Ivy Track Recruiting
March 22, 2007, 07:56:05 AM
If all continues well, one of my children may be a recruited track and field athlete.  I have some questions that I hope some of my Cornell sports brethren can help with.

Of course, Ivies can't offer scholarships, but I know that some teams have the advantage of admissions preference for a limited number of their recruits.  Do you know if Cornell or the other Ivy track programs get a few gold stars to put on applications?  Just curious if anyone has any knowledge about this.

The child I mentioned is only a H.S. freshman, so it's not a pressing matter, but it's something to consider.

> Also, as we all know, the league had a legitimate Heisman candidate in 1971. <

What about Yale's Rich Diana in 1981?  Consequently, that was the last year that Ivy League football was Div. 1-A.  When Yale came to Schoellkopf that year to play us on homecoming, they were 8-0, and I believe ranked in the top 20. A loss to Princeton at the end of the season took them out of the rankings.

Shoot, Dick Kazmaier from Princeton actually won the Heisman in 1951.  Hey, that's only 55 years ago.

I have to tell you though, it was a real kick in the stomach when the NCAA demoted the Ivy League to Div. 1-AA status in 1982.

John Spencer Is Dead / Embassy Inn on Dryden Rd.?
August 09, 2006, 05:04:41 PM
Is the Embassy Inn on Dryden Rd. a decent place to stay?  I originally thought that it was the Embassy Suites thanks to an error made by Yahoo Yellow Pages, but the owner told me over the phone that it is the Embassy "Inn."  Is it clean and a little spacious?  Can you rate it on the following scale:

Hillside Inn = 1 pt.
Statler = 100 pts.

Where does the Embassy Inn fit on this scale?  Thanks. B-]

Al, that wins the Funniest Thing I Read Today Cup.Thanks. (It is pretty stupid when you think about it.)

Hoy Field?!  I remember when Cornell destroyed the JV baseball field adjacent to Lynah the summer of my freshman year (1980).  Can't say that I like to see ballfields go by the wayside.

Too bad I only got to see one game this year; one of the four. :-(

From the Princeton sports website:

Leroux made 35 saves on Saturday against Cornell to become the first Princeton goaltender to blank the Big Red in 42 years.

Not exactly history I had hoped to witness.

At least Princeton's organist was pretty cool.  Anything is better than the canned music they used to play.  I especially thought it was funny when he (or she?) played "Kashmir" and "Sympathy for the Devil."

As smart as Princeton folks are supposed to be, I can't believe that the rink folks there put up white narrow-gauge netting to protect spectators in the balcony.  Thankfully, I didn't have to sit up there.  Otherwise it would be like trying to watch a hockey game with gauze over your eyes.  ::nut::

Hockey / OT -- Fans on the field
December 04, 2005, 09:29:46 PM
I just viewed a video clip of a fan running on the field of a Packers game and running away with the ball.  Not surprisingly, he was tackled by security personnel.

Granted, any spectator who jumps on any field and interrupts play is a wrong-doer, but why do players and security types seemingly always tackle the culprit?  It looks like assault to me.  I'd love to see one of these spectators who gets tackled press charges.  Just once.

> And that was pretty much the last gasp of Ivy League football greatness before the Ivies were demoted to Division IAA at the close of the decade. <

Bill, I enjoyed your post about the achievements of Marinaro and their place in NCAA football lore.  Small correction in that the Ivies were doomed to Division 1-AA in 1982.  I remember being a benchsitter on the 1981 team, the last year of 1-A for the Ivies, and an 8-0 Yale squad came to Ithaca for Homecoming.  I think they were ranked in the AP top 20 that week (1-A, mind you) and was one of only 2 or 3 undefeated teams in the country.  It snowed about 4 inches the night before, but we still had a big crowd.  An even bigger surprise was the fact that we went into halftime with the lead.  When we came out of the locker room for the second half, I was shocked to see a full Crescent.  I had the liberty of noticing these things since I knew that I had a better chance of being elected Pope that year than getting into the game.  Nonetheless, the official attendance showed a crowd of only 15,000 or so.  My guess is that a lot of people came into the stadium at halftime when tickets were no longer collected.  (One of my professors told me after the game that he had done so after listening to the first half on the radio.)  Unfortunately, we lost in the 4th quarter, and that was Cornell's last chance at making 1-A hay.  Perhaps the league's last 1-A gasp for greatness (or okay-ness) was that the Eli's Rich Diana was a finalist for the Heisman that year; something we will probably never see again.  It was also Derrick Harmon's first year of varsity ball, for which he received some kind of honors, and rightly so.

It kinda sticks in my craw the way that Ivy football has been relegated to the football third world (or the second, at least).  :-P   It seems to me that there can be some niche between the over-the-top Miami, Oklahoma, Florida St. style football programs and what we have now in the Ivy League.  What a shame.
