Quote from: VoltairePangloss sometimes said to Candide: "All events are linked together in the best of all possible worlds. For after all, if you had not been expelled from a fine castle with great kicks in the backside for love of Mademoiselle Cunégonde, if you had not been subjected to the Inquisition, if you had not traveled about America on foot, if you had not given the Baron a great blow with your sword, if you had not lost all your sheep from the good country of Eldorado, you would not be here eating candied citrons and pistachios."

"That is well said," replied Candide, "but we must cultivate our garden."

The rest of all possible worlds,
One finds that this is
The best of all possible worlds!

Quote from: TrotskyI'm ragging on pop up for profit degree mills.  Q is not a joke for who they admit, they're a joke for deliberately aiming to be a Brand rather than an institution of higher learning.

I have very close second-hand information on this. They are starting to pick up some better students, and many faculty members are very focused on teaching and being good at it. Overall, the student outcomes are perhaps better than some here might imagine. Whether those outcomes justify the cost of attending is another matter, but that's an open question at a lot of schools.

But the administration is unduly focused on branding, as you say, and to no purpose. Under Leahy, the president who dragged Quinnipiac out of commuter school-dom, the branding was in the service of accumulating more funding so that they could acquire or develop new academic units to round out the school. Now, exactly no one is certain what it's for. Presidents and administrations post-Leahy have no idea what they want the institution to be.

Quote from: wolcomaIt ain't rocket science but modern coaches want to pretend they are Clemson or LSU.

Clemson likes to pretend they're Clemson this year.

Quote from: BeeeejThat's the wonderful and yet horrible thing about the NCAA tournament - anything can happen over the course of four single-elimination games. Allain was capable of leading that Yale team to a third-place finish in the ECAC with a reasonably decent 18-12-3 record, yet a loss in the conference tourney semifinals. They were literally the last at-large team into the NCAA tourney. But once you're in, you just have to win four in a row (two of which they did win handily, the other two in overtime). They deserved the championship because they won the four games they had to win, but it was definitely closer to the fluke end of the scale - stepping up in a big moment - than Quinnipiac's title was in 2023.

Indeed, Allain probably should've won with the 2010 team, which laid an egg in the ECACs, affecting their seeding, or the 2011 team, which lost a barnburner to BC in the regional final. So 2013 was like winning the Oscar for the great movie that didn't win two years ago but that probably would've won in any other year. A lifetime achievement award, of sorts.

Quote from: Jeff Hopkins '82I've occasionally picked up HCU on my car radio from Allentown.

It needs to be unusual atmospheric conditions and just before sundown. During the middle of the day it won't carry, and after dark it gets covered up by a high-powered station from New Orleans.

I've picked it up heading north on 91 through Vermont on ski trips. Faded in on the uphill, out on the downhill, but you could definitely follow most of the games.

This change is another loss.

Quote from: upprdeckThere is so little to eat on top of the hill the MacD gets swamped at lunch. You cant get from the top to the fast food on 13 and back in a lunch time.

How long ago when up by the mall you had things like Billy Bobs. multiple Chinese places, Italian, pizza hut, Arbys, Wendys, Applebees, Subway, multiple pizza places, Mexicali Rose, 3 hotels

I miss the Italian Buffet and the chinese Buffets.

I miss Mexicali Rose pretty intensely. Perfectly competent TexMex, and Tuesday wing night was the siren song of my teen years.

Quote from: RichH"Big video scoreboard" should be banned in buildings like Lynah and Appleton. Completely glaring, ruining the light & atmosphere, not to mention turning fans into teevee watchers instead of active participants.
The annoying thing about the video scoreboard on the A/O side is that it's not big enough or consistent enough to see replays of stuff that's actually useful (if the refs are debating a penalty, for example), it's on one side of the rink so it's difficult to see, AND about 80% of the time it's either running the Welcome to Lynah Rink graphic or some fuckin Tompkins Trust Shuffle...
The video board at Lynah is really bad, they don't even cue up the replay most of the time in addition to all the problems stated above

Removing the video board would be a plus, plus, plus! I keep hoping for some catastrophic failure.

Hmmm.  I like the angry bear.  The dead turtle and lion not so much.

Looks pretty silly for a licensed product.

Silly bears get pretty wild when they vanquish their foes.

Quote from: Scersk '97Considering Rendell, I'd imagine it was not his first choice...

Considering the title of his book, I'd imagine he not quite the tough guy he believes himself to be.

Rendell was certainly "colorful," and he did some good in his time. This book was probably his mini-Giuliani moment. At least there was no hair dye running down his face as he rode off into the sunset.

My commentary, if there could be said to be such by dropping in a picture, was only that there is a long, relatively silly debate over just this kind of thing. As an upstate New Yorker, I'll say that there is some point to the elements "building character"; I'll also say that can go way too far. (Note the struggles our crew team has getting out some seasons.)

I want the lacrosse team to use the facility just enough to get in quality practice but not too much as to lose the well-known weather-related aspects of our home-field advantage, which there is no shame in exploiting.

It is ironic that the author uses a euphemism.

Quote from: chimpfoodThat's fucking big time let's go. Wonder if we just let Roest walk because I want this kid in this fall. I could see a world where we leave him in the Q for another year though because he doesn't have much CHL experience still. After all of the short goalies we've had 6 feet 4 inches sounds sweet.

First tall keeper since Scrivens I think.  Pet peeve for a long time. Excellent!

I am happy about this. Casey is not going to rock the boat regarding our well-known defensive culture, and I think a big goalie strongly benefits a team that limits shots.

I don't need a goalie that can stop breakaways, although it's nice; I need a goalie that stops everything from outside and gets hit by a lot of pucks on the power play.

I think we should press more unsettled. Don't let them set up at all, even at the risk of a miscue or two. We could break it open and run away with it instead of letting them hang around.
