Seeing it live from Section F, I'm pretty sure I heard a whistle before it went in, and remember thinking immediately that the early whistle was why they waved it off.

Last night, RIT beat St. Lawrence 6-5 in OT in front of a homecoming sell-out of almost 11,000 at Blue Cross Arena.

According to the Rochester paper, their next two homecoming opponents will be Penn State in 2012 (good karma to schedule them) and Michigan in 2013 (how much money did it take to make that happen?).

Kudos to a hockey program in our backyard doing good things. Should the ECAC happen to lose RPI or (cough) Quinnipiac, I hope RIT is on the top of the replacement list.

Quote from: andyw2100I just read the article. Wow. Just wow.

On a related note, does anyone believe Schafer actually said anything close to this direct quote: "...and I'm like 'dang', you know?"

That actually turned up in the Ithaca Journal writeup as well : http://www.theithacajournal.com/article/20101024/SPORTS03/10230412/1124/Iles++Cornell+debut+highlighted+by+shutout

... which takes nothing away from the point that the Sun article was awful.

Quote from: Oh god my eyesIles is a former member of the U-18 team, who played against the Red in this very rink a year ago and won. Now, with Iles in the Red zone, there was no stopping the freshman from playing exceptionally.

Iles posted 30 saves on the night and helped keep the visitors from managing any goals past him, even on the power play. Throughout all 60 minutes of play he kept a strong stance without letting his guard down.

Darn good.

Can you imagine the insanity of a Cornell-Harvard doubleheader if the women's game had been put in Ithaca? With the right advertising I bet the women's game would have been a near sell out.

Quote from: Jordan 04And it was great to hear them take as many opportunities as they could to play after whistles, while the BU band seemed content to just watch the game.

The BU Band was very large (maybe 70? So that's what it looks like when a university supports their band) and actually pretty good. Also they started most of the BU cheers throughout the game.

I know this because my seats, purchased through the Cornell ticket office as soon as they went on sale, were RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BU BAND. How on earth does that happen? It wasn't just me - there was a whole stretch of Cornell sections back there.
The fact that we were put there in the first round of ticket allotments tells me either
(a) it was determined ahead of time that those would be Cornell sections (makes no sense), or
(b) somebody screwed up, put Cornell people on the wrong side of the rink, and figured it out too late to fix.

It wasn't the end of the world, just a little bizarre.

Sections E and F are general admission this year (no assigned seats). I kind of like the idea ... it will be interesting to see how it works out.
http://www.athletics.cornell.edu/tickets/

Cornell student season tickets to men's ice hockey games will be selected by a lottery method similar to last year's process. Line numbers will be issued from the Athletic Department Ticket Office in Bartels Hall from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. beginning Monday, Sept. 21 through Friday, Sept. 25.

Seat selection will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3. An exact schedule and details will be announced shortly.

Changes to this year's process have been modified and now include more new blocks of tickets for undergraduate students. Each student may purchase one season ticket. The cost for this year's season ticket is $247.

The ticket blocks and order in which seats are selected will be as follows:

Graduate and Professional students: 250 tickets in a specific block (in sections B, D & G).
Undergrads participating in the ticket selection process for the fourth time: 100 tickets.
Undergrads participating in the ticket selection process for the third time: 300 tickets.
Undergrads participating in the ticket selection process for the second time: 400 tickets.
Undergrads participating in the ticket selection process for the first time: 550 tickets.
Students eligible for blocks 2-4 may also enter the block 5 lottery to increase their chances of securing season tickets. Complete details will be announced shortly.
Anyone know when we'll hear some more about the procedure? There's been a surprising lack of details (and advertising), considering that the line number distribution supposedly starts tomorrow ...

QuoteCheerleaders and/or spirit team members, not to exceed 12 in number, plus the mascot shall be admitted, if in uniform, via the gate list furnished to the host institution by the competing institution's director of athletics; all other institutional representatives will be admitted only on presentation of a ticket. A maximum of 12 cheerleaders and/or spirit team members shall be allowed on the sideline during the progress of the game. The cheerleaders shall be located in a designated area by the tournament manager.

Band members, not to exceed 25 in number, who are in uniform and performing at the championship will not be charged admission to the competition. Bands, or any component thereof, are allowed to play during timeouts, between games, and before and after the competition.

I fail to see how anything in the above precludes a greater than 25-member band.
I agree with you that it depends how you read the sentence. An unfortunate interpretation was chosen this year.

Anyway, it was nice to see some flashes of the team we saw against Princeton a few weeks ago. They need to put it all together again next week. Anybody (who knows more about lacrosse than me) know what's up with John Glynn's faceoffs recently? He was invincible against Princeton and great for several weeks before that.

the student turnout was embarrassing

the student sports marketing group is doing a very poor job promoting these games

were losing out on a potential home-field advantage (in lax, hockey, bball)
Forget about relying upon the "sports marketing group" -- the students will either show up or not.  Inexplicable to me why any sports-minded Cornell student wouldn't want to take a couple of hours to support the team in the playoffs.
It would be pretty easy for a lot of students to miss, though, with it being finals week and the Daily Sun being over. It would have seemed to me like a no-brainer to email the hockey ticket or sports pass lists to make sure students knew about the game.
Although several nice shots of the band!
All 25 of them. Thank the NCAA for their absurd rules regarding number of instruments at a home outdoor game in a mostly-empty football stadium.

The not so good:
- CU is taking too many penalties - some of the dumb variety.
- Defensive zone turnovers - more than Schafer would like to see.  Not as many in the neutral zone which is good.
- Still need to finish and drive the net.  Nice goal by Collins by doing just that!
Dumb and lazy. It's one thing to be a physical team that takes a lot of roughing, charging, et al. penalties, but hooking, holding, tripping just means you are out of position or aren't moving your feet and you are reaching. That will come back to bite them in one of these games where they are hanging on by a goal sooner or later, so this is a habit I'd like to see them break.
I was shocked when the announcers said we're the 5th least penalized team (or something like that) in the country. It seems like we're always taking bad penalties this year.

The article isn't nearly specific enough to answer that.

This is very disappointing. #16 was one of my favorite players to watch last season. With the exception of a crummy ricochet off his skate that led to a breakaway goal at Madison Square Garden, he always seemed valuable on the ice.

Several times I watched him break up 2-1s, taking the pass in his ribs like good defensemen are taught.

Best of luck.
I agree.  I think he's a talented defenseman.
I disagree. A lot. His defensive skills might have been okay but I cringed every time he touched the puck. Too bad we couldn't help him develop more.
