UNH sold out their allotment of tickets pretty quickly (not sure how many they were given), was a bit surprised given the lone Friday night game and 7 hour drive. Think it may be our first game at Lynah since we left the ECAC (?). UNH likely has a little bit of an edge having already played a number of regular season games (split at Miami, tie against Michigan at home, tie at Northeastern) while Cornell has only had two exhibition games. Bit of an odd history here, if I am not mistaken Cornell has won the two regular season meetings (Estero, Fl. and Durham, NH) while UNH has won the three post-season meetings (Worcester, Buffalo, Albany).

Off to Lynah, good luck!

p.s. feel free to come over and say hi, we had a great time with jtw & company in Florida a few years back, including members from each school's cheering section pulling double duty for the other on the 2nd day. We'll probably be up with our pep band in sec 205.

Expectations are not high in Wildcat country, the team coming to Albany this year bears no resemblance to the teams you've met in the past. There was a ton of parity in Hockey East this year (#3-#9 separated by 4 points) and UNH overachieved to beat out a much better Boston College squad for the Regular Season Title. UNH's last real good showing was 1/23 @ BU, from there it was a tight draw and win against Merrimack, getting swept by blowing a 2 goal lead two nights in a row in Orono, a tight series against NU & UVM, and a tie and loss to BC to close out the RS 1 point above the Eagles. In the playoffs we were down 4-2 the first night before Madore choked 4 straight (plus an EN). The next two nights we were completely shut down by the trap, UNH is mostly a transition team and had absolutely no idea how to adjust. The Wildcats were out shot 25-17 in game 2 and 51-34 in game 3 (OT). Defensively this team is weak; they're not overly physical, take dumb penalties, and forget to clear out the front of the net. Foster started off the season so-so but pulled it together mid way through the year and has been standing on his head as of late to make up for our poor defense. Our power play is awful; poor puck handling, multiple unforced errors, and continuous shots in to screens.

I missed UNH-Cornell at the Whitt earlier in the season due to work and only saw a period and a half of the ECAC semi, but if Cornell is a defensively sound team (as they often are) who can also cause havoc on the other end of the ice (as they did at the Whitt earlier in the season) then they ought to clean up quite easily.

Prediction: 4-1 Cornell
Rob,

Are you talking about the Goofers?  If so this would seem to imply parallel evolution.  I thought that this theory was against a basic tenet concerning college hockey fandom.  In fact there seems to be quite a body of evidence with regard to the lack of original ideas coming from the fans side of the glass - for some programs this actually seems to spill over to the ice (i.e. last years man advantage).

Is it really true that the Goofers did exactly what many of us consider our introduction to the third period?  If so I think there may be many of us who will be examining our beliefs.

Minnesota would generally do it in the 3rd during a timeout, if not they would run it with 5 minutes or less in the game on an icing so they could get most of it in with the band before having to go acapella. The difference between Cornell's and Minnesota's (as well as just shouting "Hey!" instead of sieve) is that the Gophers fan would do the chorus once through, then the band would go back and forth with the student section on the "Heeeya" "Heeeeeeeeeyaaaah" - "heeey" "heeeey" bridge in the middle of the song, then kick back in to the chorus again. The University of Maine does this same rendition (shouting "Hey! Go Maine!") several times a game, and one probably borrowed it from the other as they both also do the "Hey buddy, you're outta here!" penalty cheer. If I were a betting man I'd say that Maine most likely borrowed it in the early to mid 90's when Shawn Walsh first started organizing a student section and put them and the band up in the balcony. As I don't doubt this description was confusing you can find an audio clip of the Maine rendition (which as I said is pretty much the same as Minnesota's) here: http://www2.umaine.edu/pepband/audio/11_9_02/heysong.mp3

The Rock n' Roll Part II sieve chant is widely used in college hockey, and is performed by:
UNH (by my research the eldest of the schools doing it, 1989 is the earliest confirmed date, may be earlier than that)
University of Alaska Anchorage
UMass Amherst
UMass Lowell
Northeastern
Minnesota-Duluth
St. Cloud State
I put the "as far as I can tell" in because for all I know the song has actual lyrics that no one happens to remember or use.  So just to be safe...
That would be "Rock and Roll Part I": http://www.kovideo.net/lyrics/g/Gary-Glitter/Rock-And-Roll-Part-I.html :-}
The song isn't about child molestation as far as I can tell.
With only one word in the entire song ("Hey!"), is the "as far as I can tell" really needed? ;)

This was part of their regular regiment of cheers for a while (usually done in the 3rd period, started by the band and continued acapella after the puck drops: chorus, "heey, heeeeeey, heeeeeeeey" back and forth bit, chorus again), then after the most recent child molestation charge against Gary Glitter the band dropped it for the last few seasons. Apparently they've picked it back up again.
I have some vague memory of a story (told before previous Cornell-BU games) that the "Go BU" cheer had morphed into some sort of vulgar thing about BC, and the BU administration had forbidden them to play it.
It went from
"Go BU!"
to
"Go BU! Beat BC!"
to
"Go BU! Fuck BC!"
and then
"Go BU! Fuck BC, they suck dick!"
before they finally killed the tune off.
Finally, abuse, assault, and rape - these are really serious. While there may not be proof in the post this is not the proper place to present it. More important than the player's involvement is that this is somebody else's life that we would be discussing. And likely a pretty traumatic part of their life. If those affected want to step forward and present the proof it will happen.
While I agree that the allegations are probably bullshit let's not kid ourselves, we all know the people here would be the first to exploit it if it happened to another team.
I thought the Bitz shot that "hit the post" was a goal. Not sure what angle the ref had, but the players were celebrating and the goal light went on. If it had hit the post, it would have made a clear sound. Definitely thought it was in the back of the net and bounced out.
Was in the UHN corner and thought it hit the back of the net and popped out uncalled (see Cornell - Maine in Portland a few years back), but we def. could hear a loud ping noise from down in our end.

Hockey / Re: Florida hockey classic (Estero) FAQ
December 27, 2006, 11:15:32 PM
Was going through the Germain Arena FAQ and came acrossed this:

"Noise-making Devices: No extraneous noise-making devices are permitted inside the Arena. These items include, but are not limited to: horns, whistles, air horns, cymbals, cow bells, bugles."

Have they ever raised a stink about this before? UHNers have a cowbell cheer, too.
Not that it really matters, but it looks like the seats given to the Cornell ticket office this year are in the 114 corner. I think we'd been in the 118 corner for the past couple years.

UHN is also having some sort of alumni reception at the rink, so maybe they'll be in the corner we usually have.
The tickets I got off of my UNH buddies were in section 103. Presume they were bought through the UNH box office.
