Given who their coach is, probably not the best choice.

Hockey / Re: To The Band
February 03, 2025, 01:21:38 PM
I love seeing/hearing the Pep Band at away games and donate to help them get there.

One way the band might contribute beyond just music would be to tap its alumni (or archives/database, if they have one) and learn more about the history of songs and cheers at Lynah, to renew some of the traditions that have slipped away or changed for the worse.  There was a time when the band started some of the cheers at games, or at least encouraged those students in Section A (and B) to start some.  To me, the Pep Band is more likely to learn about and implement "oldies but goodies" than the student sections as a whole.  And it would help with what seems to me to be a lack creativity in recent (or many) years.  For example, I was at the Harvard game, on the townie side, and heard audible groans each time the students started a "Harvard Sucks!" chant.  Some were ruing the vulgarity (if you want to call it that), but many lamented the lack of creativity.  Shouldn't we be better than that?

An easy and obvious one to restart is when the keys came out in the third period and the generic "warm up the bus" chant started.  Against Harvard, or any Boston-area school, we used to chant, "go staht the cah" (and "go start the tank" when we played Army).  I'm disappointed no one thought that up on their own (and, of course, not surprised no students seem to know it existed oreviously.  The band can take the lead and get other students involved.  There were plenty of Harvard-specific cheers in the past that also might be worth considering:

"H-A-R, H-A-R, H-A-R, V. V-A-R, V-A-R, V-A-R, D. Hah-Vahd, Hah-Vahd, Rah."

or

"That's H-A-R with a V.  V-A-R with a D. Knit one, pearl two, Harvard boys, yoo hoo! (crowd waves)."

Of course, not everything should be tied to the past and today's students and band should have the freedom to be as creative as they can, but there is some value in looking to the past also, when it can make a positive difference.

Ryan Vesce.  IMHO, the most underrated player of the era.  Overshadowed by all the love for Baby, but I've always thought Vesce was the key contributor.

Quote from: BearLoverI'm rooting for Q so only one ECAC team makes the NCAAs. Never rooting for Clarkson again after 2018-19 ECAC Championship game.

Maybe it's a sign of the times, but I was upset that Coach Vaughan did not come over to shake Coach Syer's hand after the game Sunday. I believe it was also Casey Jones who just walked off Lynah without a shake this year.

Don't know why,but it certainly drops them down in my estimation.

I'll still root for Colgate and Clarkson Friday night. If they both win, probably Clarkson.

Casey gave a legit wave to the Cornell bench that night. I was in section N and saw it firsthand.

CJ Young, from some school in Cambridge/Allston, scored a natural shorthanded hat trick in 49 seconds in 1988.

They just hired a new showrunner, for season 2 (assuming it gets renewed), Keith Eisner '89.  So we may be in for more authentic references.

Quote from: Dowens1054Cranky, I hear you, but trust me on this one...hope I'm right...watch his YouTube video, he is also rated by MLB Scouting bureau as a 10-15 round draft pick for the upcoming June 2012 MLB Draft...

David

David probably has a good perspective on this. If I remember right, he played baseball while at Cornell.  Funny story:  I was in a packed TV lounge at High Rise 1 in 1986, watching Game 6 of the World Series.  He was there too, although he probably won't remember me.  During the game, he left the room for something when Mookie Wilson came up to bat and Mookie got a hit (or did something positive).  Then it happened a second time.  So in the 10th, we basically pushed him out of the room and held the door shut until the Mets rallied all the way back.  Thanks for contributing to that historic game!!

Hockey / Re: Gary Bettman Visiting Cornell
October 25, 2007, 09:44:36 AM
Bettman didn't drive expansion; he was hired by the owners to implement it.  They saw the NBA model and wanted to duplicate it, so naturally they hired Stern's heir.

The failure to capture significant long-term nationwide media dollars was the biggest reason for the economic problems that the league faced. How many of the expansion/relocated teams could be considered failures?  San Jose has frequently fielded Cup-contending teams; Anaheim reached the finals twice and won it once; Tampa Bay has won a cup as has Dallas, and Carolina.  Even Florida reached the finals.  Minnesota has an annually strong team.

I don't know the hard annual attendance figures at the expansion/relocation sites, but I think most have done pretty well in that regard.

Since the owners wanted to capture big media dollars, it seemed logical to them that expansion was necessary -- would people in Dallas or Tampa or Phoenix be likely to watch the NHL if they didn't have a local team to follow?

Not having a salary cap at the same time that free agency took off was a big problem, since teams in big cities with long-time fan bases were able to capture more local media and advertising dollars than others, allowing them to pay more for good and marginal players and therefore hurt the finances of the other teams who were competing for players.  But not having the cap or full revenue sharing in place is not Bettman's fault -- the players were not willing to agree to such a thing, until a hard line was taken recently (and Bettman kept the owners on a tight leash during those negotiations and lockout).

The fault that can be found lies not with expansion, but rather with the implementation of the strategy for capturing nationwide media money (or at least the results of the strategy).  I'm no marketing expert, so I can't say what should have been done differently.  Whether it was the decision to go with FOX for the over-the-air contract, or a failure to recognize when rule changes would have helped the excitement factor, or something else, I don't know.

BTW, I always find it interesting when people claim expansion left the talent spread too thin -- wasn't it during this time that Canadians were complaining that too many Europeans were coming over and taking away Canadian hockey jobs?

Hockey / Re: Is it October yet?
I'd say the difference between this year's team being contender for a bye and a contender for an NCAA at large bid is goaltending.  Davenport/Scrivens seem like D'Alessio/Crozier.  If one of them can have a breakout year, then we're talkin.'
The difference is that D'Alessio started out as a stud goaltender his first year and most of his second.  It was only when he came down with mono before his junior season that the goaltending didn't quite get the team as far as we hoped.  Davenport and Scrivens have yet to reach the level at which Corrie played early on.

Hockey / Re: Retired Number
February 06, 2007, 09:52:49 AM
Usually, you retire a player's number for what he or she accomplished while in the uniform.  If that's the basis here, there are a number of other players who had outstanding careers at Cornell who would warrant the same honor.  I assume it's being done to capitalize on the recruiting value (Joe is a lot better known to recruits than Dryden, let alone Nethery, Tredway, Tufford, Ferguson, Lodboa etc.), but not retiring Dryden's number first seems like a slight.

Hockey / Re: Joe Nieuwendyk Retires
People who attend Cornell are considered members of the class with which they entered unless they request reaffiliation with another class.  This is true whether or not they finish their degrees.  So referring to him as "Joe Nieuwendyk '88" implies nothing about the status of his degree.
Official policy at the Sun used to be you did not use class year unless the person graduated.  The famous exception was Vonnegut.  After Nieuwendyk left school, a few of the editors decided to do the same to honor him, although early on it wasn't used consistently (and in fact if the Managing Editor saw it, he would take it out).
