Hockey / Re: NCAAs quarterfinal Cornell vs. BU

Quote from: RobbCount me in the 1000% proud camp.  It would have been so easy for this team to mail it in - they had every excuse in the world NOT to put in the extra effort it must have taken to gel late Feb & March with a completely different lineup than they had a month before.  Their record was already a millstone around their necks - by the time everyone got healthy, it was clear we were going on the road for the ECAC playoffs, with a run to Lake Placid very unlikely.  Just let the season run out and move on with life.

But they didn't take that path - they did not let the situation control their intensity.  They buckled down and poured their hearts into every shift, steamrolling Colgate on the road, never giving up against Q, controlling Clarkson, taking down the #1 team in the polls, and taking arguably the most skilled team in the country to OT.

I could not be prouder - which is exactly why it hurts so much.  If losing didn't hurt, then winning wouldn't be special, and that's not a life I choose to live.  I want the highs, so I take the lows.  You cannot have one without the other.

Let's Go Red.

Quote from: Give My RegardsI'm on a zoom with the people I work with and one of them went to his first-ever Cornell hockey game Saturday night with his wife and two kids, both of whom are less than two years old.  His attitude about the cussing was, "well they're going to hear it anyway at some point, what's the difference?  We're already seeing guys beat each other up on the ice."  He was surprised at Coach Schafer's announcement, as he said it didn't seem to be all that bad.

It seems it was only an issue when the league brass came to town. I assume they're melting the ice this week and we've got 7 months for memories to fade over a hot summer. This too shall pass.

I recall Coach Schafer scolding the students over the PA after "The Refs Fuck Sheep" got new lungs and "Asshole" started being appended every time to "See ya" (before "you goon" started manifesting). He had young kids at the time.

I liked it when a few years prior, Section B just chanted "SHEEP *pause* THE REF *pause* SHEEP ..."

It's never the right words that are most effective in chants/cheers, but the right *silences*. Very few students understand that.
Ironically, it was my inability to shout profanity (a-hole) that led to me standing up and screaming in frustration (at Nickerson?) "you goon!" in one of those quiet moments...

This.  The weekend is going to be 90% Q and Cornell fans.  The Q fans are going to leave after their game to either celebrate or slink back to Toilet-on-the-Connecticut.

We will have a half empty building to ourselves.

Advice: if you come without tickets get there early because LP has yet to get their shit together at the walkup office, and the lines get long. You'll get in but you don't want to miss the whole first period.

Curious, doesn't SLU travel well?  Such a short drive?  I would hope they would. Can't wait for Friday night! LGR!!
if everyone in canton goes, they could fill as many as two sections

You're joking right? You all do realize that the 2 biggest draws in Lake Placid always have been SLU and Clarkson? It's actually not even close. I read the comment the other day about the "90% Q and Cornell fans" and chuckled. It's only an hour and a half from Canton to Lake Placid and, every time we play there, roughly half of the attendees are SLU fans. So, just letting you know, yes there will be plenty of SLU fans there.
I take back nothing. The main lesson I have learned in life is that being right is the least important thing to be.

I imagine townies from St Lawrence WILL travel this weekend, but unfortunately for their hockey team, many students will still be on spring break...

Quote from: vemonkeyWish it had happened last night.  The student section was a little too rowdy tonight and needs to relearn some of the chants from the list on elynah.

Although I believe in adaptation and new, creative cheer development :) I agree with "relearn" suggestion:
1) In addition to jingling keys at inappropriate moments, it is disappointing to hear the students chant "warm up the bus" when I'm pretty sure it was "go start the bus." (perhaps I am remembering wrong?)
2) Also, maybe the "you goon" cheer was intentionally changed, but the "aaahhh, see ya! a-hole, you goon!" has morphed to something else that sounds silly to me. (But maybe I'm just invested in the original because I inspired it...)
3) Personally, I'd like to hear the Black Hole cheer resurrected - haven't heard the whole cheer in a long time - starting with "hey ___, you're not a goalie, you're a sieve... That's just plain fun to do with the crowd!
4) Finally, the canned scoreboard crowd-rowdy-maker videos have to go. Embarrassing, impersonal, lazy IMO. I think St Lawrence uses the hi-tech score board much more effectively than Cornell.

Hockey / Re: Season Ticket Renewal
January 10, 2022, 08:46:40 PM
I'm also a relocated section C season ticket holder. I haven't paid yet and tomorrow 1/11/22 appears to be the deadline. So, am I to understand that if we don't pay for our seats during this pandemic when students are being strongly encouraged to avoid social gathering, and now our beloved coach has COVID, I will lose my tickets that I've paid for faithfully for over 25 years? (not to mention the extra $60 per seat per year I've been paying for the privilege of sitting in those awful red seats...) I'd love to hear anything you all have found out.

Interesting, we were at the Clarkson game.  When I called to buy tix over a week in advance, I was told that the Cornell section was sold out (perhaps they didn't actually have a Cornell section...) and couldn't get four seats together anywhere in the rink.  We ended up with some other Cornell supporters in the middle of a Clarkson section on the end.  The Clarkson fans sitting behind us were talking about how crazy Cornell fans are, yelling all the time and standing through the games.  They see us as aliens.  We tried to keep mostly quiet but some very young Cornell fans behind us started yelling "Let's Go Red!" in the third period and all eyes were on us, disapprovingly. I told my family I'd been in louder churches. In my opinion, the only cheering for Clarkson came from their band/student section.  Our band was superb, and I assumed, though I could not see the section well from where I was sitting, that our fans were sitting near the band.  I know they made as much noise as most of the Clarkson arena (well except for the guy in the Clarkson band who couldn't keep his hands off his electric bass guitar...)

We are planning to go to ECAC tourney also, presuming Cornell makes it (no jinxing) ::worry::

Hockey / purchasing Lake Placid tickets
March 13, 2017, 07:58:07 PM
I've been looking for announcements about tickets - does any one know if we should buy from ECAC website or is there a block that will be sold at Cornell?  I want all-session tickets not just single game.
thanks.

I had heard it was the Abbotts who were there, so I wondered if BettyJo got the sweater number wrong.  Actually, although it makes me sad to think that our players were classless in this case, at least it makes me feel better that Clarkson players were not roaming around town looking for fights.

BettyJo:  Was #15 wearing his jersey at Applebees?  Or do you know Dan Pegoraro personally?  :-O

Ok.  So you are saying the reason that Cornell couldn't complete passes, gave up all kinds of pucks in the neutral zone, missed shots at the open net, was because Vesce was missing?  If so, that makes me very nervous about next year.  I agree that Vesce was a cohesive force and leader of this team and certainly his face-off ability was very important, but there was a lot of other talent and lines on this team that did not play up to their abilities.  There was something “mental” about our breakdown.

I continue to believe that our attitude was affected by the fight (and the outcome) and perhaps more importantly, that fight fed Clarkson’s will to win.

Hockey / Clarkson excessive penalties
March 15, 2004, 10:32:56 AM
Perhaps one of the experts on this board can tell me if my perception is correct:  Is Clarkson pretty consistently one of the most penalized teams in the ECAC and in the nation?  The reason I ask is because it seems to me that lack of discipline is becoming a long-term trademark for Clarkson.

Although I know the fans were taunting some of the Clarkson players, many of them showed remarkable lack of restraint.  They were classless all weekend.  Examples?
1) The dancing and yelling by Traylen in Sunday’s game as described in another thread
2) The Applebee's incident (though I understand the events are under debate)
3) The disgusting purposeful spitting on the penalty box glass by Matt Curley and others while they gestured to the crowd
4) Latulippe's bashing of his stick on the ice when he didn't like the call during Saturday’s game
5) Not to mention the abundance of cheap shots taken throughout all three games.

The point I am trying to make is, shouldn't the ECAC be taking some kind of lead on pressuring Clarkson to clean up it's act?  There seems to be a culture problem there that is not correcting itself.  If the coaches don’t expect more from their players then I believe the league needs to put pressure on Clarkson’s administration.

I have watched every other team this year (and for decades), and Clarkson seems to consistently stand out in this way, and it seems to be getting worse.

Please respond.  I am interested in your perceptions.  Perhaps I am getting too old to watch this game.  ::scared::

Unfortunately, I completely agree.  We stooped, were embarrassed by the way the call singled us out and lost our (moral) edge.  (No matter how much Nickerson deserved to be smacked.)  Clarkson feeds on getting under an opponent's skin.  They succeeded.

FYI - If you read the confusing note in today's Ithaca Journal and wondered if you need to, as a season ticket holder, go to buy you tickets for this weekend's games against Clarkson, YOU DON'T.  I just called the ticket office and they are being bombarded with calls from people as a result of that article.  The message was supposed to be directed at season Student Ticket holders since their package did not include the playoff games.
