If you think the photo is worth buying, I'd love to order one from you.  In addition, if you ever have any success with the other photos discussed in this thread, I'd be one happy customer.

In any case, thanks for doing all of this.  Cornell hockey wouldn't be quite the same without it!

Hi Age,

I hope I didn't send the wrong signal with that last message.  I have no intention of printing your photos.  Rather, I meant to ask you whether photos such as the one you took during the anthem would be of good enough quality for you to make the panaromic sized photos I originally inquired about?  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'd be very willing to pay you to do this for me!

Cheers,
Mike

That's a great shot.  How large do you think I could print it before it lost some quality?

Hockey / Re: Mulling over the TBRW Awards
February 29, 2004, 11:17:21 AM
Subjective Awards:

+ Peter Natyshak Award, Career Improvement. --> Hornby

+ Randy MacFarlane Award, Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess --> Mike Knoepfli

+ Dave Shippel Award, Scrappiness and Effort. This award, which is associated with the longest-running typo in TBRW? history ("scappiness"), generally goes to a player who plays bigger than his size or "better than his talent."  --> Cam Abbott

+ Terry Gage Award, Determination in a Supporting Role. This award generally goes to an athlete whose contributions do not show up in the box score. It often goes to an unexpected player who comes out of the pack to really contribute a particular skill as a role player.  --> Jeremy Downs

+ Mike Schafer Award, Leadership and Passion. This award needs no explanation.  --> Vesce

+ Pierre Belanger Award, Most Loathed Referee. Nor does this one.  --> Do I need to specify which Murphy?

+ John Carter Award, Most Respected Opponent. This award generally goes to an opposing player who has both ferociously skewered Cornell and who we would take in a heartbeat for one of our own. It is based on his performance against us only in games this year.  --> Dave Steckel from Ohio State.  His entire line played fantastic in that game at Lynah.

+ Kevan Melrose Award, Least Respected Opponent. This award goes to the guys who, when you scream "Sucks!" you really mean it. The bad and the ugly. The goon, the cheap shot artist, the whiner, the showboat. The asshole. -->Dave Thomas of Colgate

+ Doug Dadswell Award, Most Valuable Freshman. Define it however you want. Open only to freshman, not transfers. --> Have to go with McKee, but the entire group has really been terrific as the season has moved on.

+ Joe Nieuwendyk Award, Most Valuable Player. Again, define it however you want, as long as you consider only this year's performance.  --> Moulson has been our most reliable and most consistent player.  His snap-shot and wrist shot have been deadly.

I seem to have convinced myself that Knoepfli is one of our best players.  I think he has logged lots of ice time on the penalty kill (which is something over 90% effective this year), and this has cost him a lot of opportunities to get 5-5 or 5-4 ice time.  That said, I think he has played very well.  He has shown great vision on the ice and doesn't get enough credit for his board work and his skating ability.

I believe his relatively low scoring output this season is a combination of two factors:  first, I think many teams (see Union for example) have had success just packing it in in front of the net against us and have played a trapping style with success; second, I don't think we have an offensive identity this year.  Though we have considerable size, we don't win nearly as many battles as we did last year and as a result haven't been able to cycle the puck and create many scoring chances.

Folks also need to remember that he has played with well over 5 line combinations this year.  He started the year on the "3rd" line with Pegoraro and Hynes.  Obviously, Peggy has had lots of trouble this year and that line never really clicked.

Of course, this is all just my opinion.  I just get queasy when we start bashing our own guys.  While it has been a strange and tough year, we may still win the ECAC regular season title if the cards fall in our favor tomorrow night.

Sorry for being such a tyro.  I had no idea this would be so complicated.  If anyone is willing to give this a shot, I'd be happy to compensate you for your efforts.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks for your thoughts Rich.   I'll keep poking around.  If I find anything out I'll be sure to post it here.

On another note, does anyone know if it would be worth my while to purchase a panoramic lens for my digital camera?  I suppose I could take the shot myself, though I am sure it would be less than stellar quality.

Hockey / Panoramic Photos of a Full Lynah?
February 24, 2004, 09:31:58 PM
Hi folks,

Is anyone aware of a place where I could purchase a panoramic picture of Lynah Rink (with the students in the background and the team saluting them after a win would be even better ...)?  I'm envisioning those panoramic wall pictures that you can find at the mall such as a picture of the Garden after the Rangers won the Cup, the Boston Garden, Fenway Park, etc.

My wife and I are leaving Cornell after this season and want a memento to hang in our TV room!

Cheers,
Mike

I agree.  However, beating them could actually help our RPI, much like it did for Maine last year.

Totally, off topic - did anyone catch the score of the Holy Cross - Sacred Heart game today?

11-10!

Ben,

Great idea on the don't mess with Texas!  I think folks might take a liking to him more if someone painted his helmet.  I'm trying to think up a good nickname for him - any thoughts?

I thought the Bowling Green team was pretty classy and especially loved their goalie.  Good luck this year and I hope you guys can get back to your early-80s form!

Have you all been watching the same team I've been watching?  While this year's team is certainly not last year's team, I thought as a whole they have put forth tremendous efforts in the past two games.  We are starting to do the gritty boardwork well and are beginning to get back to that puck control - cycling style that has become so familiar to us.  We're just not getting pucks to the net and when we get cycling, guys aren't able to get free in front.

The thing that's frustrating is that we can keep the puck in the opponents' end of the ice for 10 minute stretches, and then a 3 second defensive lapse costs us a goal.  That's just backbreaking, especially when your power play is struggling.

My thoughts on certain players:

(1) McKee has done a terrific job (I sit right behind him) and he really impressed me in the Bowling Green game.  Sure he has flaws, but didn't Lenny?

(2) Some guys certainly seem to be struggling, but I have been very impressed with the effort of several players who have not been mentioned in the above posts.  Without going into too much detail, I think Bitz, Moulson, Hynes, Chris A., Cam A., Iggulden, Knoepfli, and McCutchen have really given us terrific efforts.  Why didn't I name any defensemen here?

(3) Our forwards are becoming very strong on the puck, especially Chris Abbott and Matt Moulson.  I also think that we have a lot more scoring potential than most people think.  If there were ever a way to get Knoepfli and McCutchen some open space to skate in, people would be raving about these guys.

--> I suppose I should stop now.  I'm frustrated, just like everyone else - but my frustration is not with Cornell per se, I've just got this real gloomy feeling about the future and quality of ECAC hockey and what that means for Cornell in the years to come.  Of course, as I write this I am finding out that RPI has just completed a SWEEP of #6 St. Cloud .

Oh well, I hope the boys get the triptophan (sp.?) out of their system before they hit the ice against the Lakers.

Cheers,
Mike

Hockey / Power Play
November 16, 2003, 12:12:58 AM
Hi folks,

All in all a great weekend - can't ever be upset with a 3 point North Country weekend.

This is more of a question than a critique: does anyone know why Evan Salmela hasn't played since the opening weekend?  He seemed to do a really nice job "quarter-backing" the powerplay and getting pucks to the net.

However, I noticed that he rarely saw any 5-on-5 time against WMU.  Therefore I imagine I can answer my own question with the conjecture that he is probably not up to speed defensively with Cornell's system yet (or perhaps not physical enough).

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Mike

I have always been, and remain optimistic about this team.  We all expected growing pains and it's great to see how some parts of the Cornell we are used to seeing are coming together.

Am I alone in my opinion that Evan Salmela is a terrific point man on the power play?  Since we have not had tremendous success, especially with the second PP line, I was sort of disappointed he didn't play this weekend. In addition, he played very little 5-on-5 action at Lynah last week, so I couldn't tell how good a defensive player his is.

Anyone have any thoughts on the outlook for him?

Cheers,
Mike

OK, so I should have been more forthcoming in my motivation for the post.  Though I was well aware of who the actual belt holder was, I felt kind of rude asking Age to simply update it.  I just wanted to start a thread to alert Age to the fact that it has not been updated in some time because some "friends" of mine from Harvard (sucks) commented on it.
