Quote from: dbilmesHarvard pep band replaced by a middle school band which featured 10 percussionists. Unlike the Harvard band, they were all there well before the game began. They also sounded nearly as good as Harvard band usually sounds.

I think Cornell should reach out to do this same thing when the college students are on break. As a former pep band person back in middle and high school, my band would've loved to do this.

Oh thank god.  I was sitting there last night saying how young the band looks and that the Harvard kids look like they're in middle school. My wife said I was just old. Vindicated!!

Quote from: RichHThe $1 hot dogs and $2 beer deal is valid through the end of the 1st intermission.
One can drink a lot of beer by the end of the first intermission if one puts one's mind to it.

Not that I would ever do such a thing, of course.

Hopefully it is a half decent beer for $2. I've had mixed results in the past. It's also a 2 beer limit so bring your DD to buy you a few to hold on to after the first.

See you there next Friday!  I'll wear my Hornby jersey.

Hockey / Re: Season Review
March 26, 2012, 09:06:26 AM
A great season for a relatively young team.  The upperclassmen were strong, but I cannot recall a team with so much potential.  The results of the season really reflect the youth and when put in perspective, underscore how successful this team was.

A resounding win at Yale at the start of the season straddled by two disappointing losses embodied the rollercoaster that was to come.  A heartbreaker at MSG and a loss to UMass in Estero followed by a performance at Colorado College that gave hope for the rest of the season.  A tough ECAC winless stretch that made us question if we have a full 60 minutes of hockey in us.  A must-win against Union to compete for league title achieved only to be squandered the next night at the hands of a lesser team.  Two hard-fought battles in the playoffs only to be embarrassed by our biggest rival in Atlantic City.  Locking an NCAA bid with a win against Colgate - a team with nothing to play for - was reassuring, but the fear of drawing Michigan rasing doubt as to which Cornell team will show up on the national stage.  Finally, the win against a better Michigan team showing our potential only to be followed by a loss the against a well-deserving, but less intimidating Ferris State exposing our youth.

What a rollercoaster ride!  Great season.  Thank you seniors and here's to an even better 2012-2013!

Hockey / Re: Red Cast Really Sucks
January 26, 2012, 10:22:40 AM
When North Dakota played at Cornell in 2010 they took the feed from a network.  It was the best quality video they've ever had.  The next night it was back to dissapointment.  Unfotunately all I do is complain.... write in campaign to change providers?  If we can organize for a t-shirt we certainly can organize something to get our voices heard.  Occupy Lynah?  Something!! In the end it will come down to money and I don't think anyone has enough of it right now to change a thing.

I tried researching Redcast a bit and it seems like they run off a company called Sidearm Sports so the thing is much bigger than just the video.  Looks like they run everything for the athletic department from a website perspective.  They have a large client list so I would be surprised if we weren't the only school buying their video and having all these complaints.  Maybe they should be the target of our fury?

Iles is an emergency backup (not attending camp) and Ferlin is on the roster.  Ferlin will be missed but this is a great opportunity for him.

Hockey / Re: Jersey Mockups

At the risk of bringing this thread back on topic...

1. Though I don't love a few of the designs in this particularly jersey, it would be nice to do something like this and then auction off the jersey for charity - similar to the breast cancer pink jerseys. I think something a bit more "cartoonish" like this jersey would have some appeal and could raise cash for a good cause.  Hopefully that cause is hiring the RPI crew to do live streaming video for the games.

2. I always thought of "Huggy Bear" as "Bear Angry that he got stuck in a "C" trap"

After being 4-0 down, as well. Yale lost at Sacred Heart 7-6, despite only facing 19 shots.

As amusing as it is seeing these kinds of results, it is not a good thing for the league.  Yale losing to a winless Sacred Heart team is embarrassing.
At the very least, Hahvahd beating UNH should mitigate some of the PWR damage.

As pathetic as the Yale outcome is the game attendance: 754 people in an arena with a 10,000 person capacity.  Yeah, it's a Tuesday night in Bridgeport, but come on.

I was just there for US Soccer on Tuesday, which leaves me with a couple of observations.

1. WHY!? They can't fill the Civic Center for a typical Wolfpack game.
2. Who is going to come out to watch UCONN men and/or women play in a 25k capacity stadium?
3. At least no one will be spending 2.5 hours to get out of the parking lot.
4. Why?!!

Best bet is to get the Bruins there somehow... Better bet is to not risk frostbite while watching any team play.

Quote from: scoop85Well, with hoops (sadly) finished for the season, it's time to fully shift attention to hockey.  Looking forward to joining my fellow Faithful in Albany tomorrow night.  I'm expecting a large and raucous Cornell crowd; let's make the selection committee look brilliant for keeping us East by having killer attendance!

On TV it looked like Cornell support for basketball was fantastic.  Let's match that and then some.

I don't want to see a dichotomy from last weekend.  Hockey needs to win.

UK had much better defense than expected.  As anticipated, UK ran the transition amazingly well, but I didn't think they could have shut down the 3 as well as they did.  They left Cornell with some difficult, hand-in-your face shots that didn't fall.  The open ones didn't fall either for the most part.  Got them down to a few points in the closing minutes but just could not sustain.

Great season. Cornell was a lot of fun to watch and should hold their heads up high.  We are all very, very proud of this team.

I don't think schools, NC$$, and especially (most) fans of big school teams would want anything to do with that, let alone care how the graduation data is interpreted.  They do not care who graduates, who flunks out, and who goes pro - they just care about wins today.

From a reply to article on http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/blog/the_dagger/post/Cornell-and-Kentucky-basketball-couldn-t-be-more?urn=ncaab,229428&cp=2

I am a student at Kentucky, and I personally know several of the basketball players. The idea that they are dumb is absurd. The ones that I know are all intelligent. So they don't get good grades; big deal. They work just as hard (or harder) than anyone I know, just not on school.

[rant]
'Don't get good grades, what's the big deal?? Just win me basketball games so I have something to smile about.'  I think this is a prevalent attitude and Arne Duncan is climbing a very steep hill.  One that the NC$$ will gladly push him back down.

The solution is a delineation between students and athletes.  It already exists, let's just be honest about it.  Start putting their grades next to Free Throw % and FG% or a wink face next to majors like Park Management.  I am sure there's plenty of Cornell athletes that wouldn't be supportive of this, but at least it sheds more light on what caliber "student-athletes" (read: athlete-student) these individuals are.
