Al is on to something.
It should definitely be in Washington, DC.

I can't agree with the statement that we were as good as (or better than) Union this year.  While our head-to-head record is good, their GF-GA (both in conference and out of conference) blows ours out of the water.  I saw both Union games in person this year, and I think they just oozed talent.  Fast, agile skaters, good defense - they deserve their success.  Sure, I would've happily taken a matchup (and a win!) against them on April 5th, but I'm happy to root for them now.

Still, I know the bitterman feeling.  I still find it hard to root for Harvard or Clarkson under any circumstances, and I'm sure recent graduates feel the same way about Yale given our recent record against them (this year excepted).

For what it's worth, cynical bear is still an official university logo (and is super awesome), but huggy bear is owned by athletics.

And of course, he was immortalized on the original Live at Lynah CD (recorded in 1997) with his call(s) during "The Comeback."  "Auger wins the draw... Dailey down the slot... shoot HE SCORES!!!", followed by his, um, critique of our, well, holding.  My favorite moments were actually "The net to our empty is left" and his complete shock at the go-ahead goal.

All in all, still the greatest weekend in Cornell sports in a long time.  Congrats to the women's team on an amazing run.

And as I always say when this game comes up, it was really the Mark McRae end-to-end, weaving-through-the-entire-Harvard-team goal near the end of regulation that was actually more impressive.  Of course, I say this with no disrespect to Sam "Harvard Killer" Paolini.

On a totally different and random note, will the pep band play "Axel F" for Erik Axell?
Perhaps, if anybody currently in the pep band knows what the heck it is, as none of them were born when "Beverly Hills Cop" came out (and it's not even close!).  Then again, pep bands across the land would be hamstrung if they had to play only music from the last 20 years or so...

In a fanboy kind of way, I'd vote for Elliott based almost entirely on his ripping off his helmet in disgust during the ECAC finals against Clarkson in 1997 in Lake Placid and berating the refs for the noncalls on him getting hammered by players in the crease.  At that moment, it was clear to me that a goalie could be the true leader of a team.

The title of this thread gave me another idea: Lynah Faithful TV bingo!  Check a box for each time you see RichH, jtw, judy, Jim Hyla, mha, etc. on TV.  I want Rich H as my center square.  Rich, the camera loves you!

Yes, I know I just mixed bingo with Hollywood Squares.

QuoteLowell, you missed the boat- that was Tims point.

He and I are both saying you can't live with no offense.

I'm saying two things:

1) You win by outscoring your opponent.  Of course you can't live with zero offense, but you can live without leading the country in scoring (or even being top 10).  Like the adage that pitching and defense win in baseball, it's idiotic.  Scoring more than your opponent wins, whether you shut them down completely, or bludgeon them with goals.  There were  many Brown teams in the late 90s and early 00s that were up there in the ECAC in goals scored (ahead of Cornell even) and finished exactly where we're used to seeing Brown.

2) I'm sure Schafer would love to have tons of talented scorers, and in fact, has brought in a few (Moulson, Knopp, Vesce, and Moynihan come to mind).  What I'm not sure of is if your critique is of the type of players brought in or the style he prefers.

In fairness, I agree with your assessment of the level of our program relative to others in the country.  I imagine most people on this board would as well, even if they do use the adjective "great" to describe it.

Totally agree.  That was so stupid....
What is it the equivalent of then, exactly?  A 49 seed?  Bemidji wasn't just a 4 seed; they were clearly the last team in the tournament.  While the difference between #1 and #64 in basketball is much, much bigger than #1 and #16 in hockey, from the playoff standpoint, it's the same thing.
The concept is valid- it is the last seeded team after all, but the talent difference between the 64 team in basketball and the 1 seed is much different, no?  Use RPI difference in both instances and see what you think.
Well, we're really in agreement on the principles.  Still, there's something about being Bemidji specifically that does make it pretty unlikely - they were like 38th in RPI.  So that's either like a 10 seed making the Final Four, or the 203rd (38/58 ~ 203/310) team in DI college basketball, depending on which argument you choose to make.

QuoteHuh???  What did you agree with?   Can we live with zero offense or not?

I agree with not hating on Schafer's system when we've had lots of success, and also with the idea that a purely defensive game is a part of that system.  The offense is more control-oriented than breakout-oriented (or "skilled"), but it is not always absent.

Furthermore, you can't ignore the role of scholarships in the classification of Cornell's program as a notch below Michigan/BU/whomever (which I'd agree with), nor can you say it plays no role in shaping the system.  You coach the players you have, and perhaps a high scoring player is going to attract more recruiter attention than some of the grinders we get.  But that's just speculation on my part.
