I like the idea, but the article rubs the statistician in me the wrong way for 2 reasons:

1) He claims that in the first 4 seasons their business was available 17/20 client teams made the playoffs, and hence their using this product helped them reach the playoffs.  This is making quite an assumption in causality - I find it just as likely that the teams that were already doing well were the sort looking for some technical edge and trying new ideas.

2) I like the idea of finding performance statistics for unique situations - conditional probabilities such as "how does this player perform when down by 1 goal in the 3rd period".  This may very well give some useful information.  What I don't think this will be able to capture is a question such as "how does this player perform in a critical situation with the SEASON on the line".  For example: a critical playoff game.  The reason is that these situations just don't come up enough - you'll never have a large enough sample to draw meaningful conclusions.  Sometimes there just isn't a substitute for a good coach's/GM's intuition.

That being said, does anyone know of a database of raw college hockey numbers?  I'd love to crunch some numbers myself for fun.  I looked back in the winter but couldn't find anything.  Maybe I'll go bug that KRACH guy...

Just an update from Michigan.  Kampfer (guy who got taken down) is doing ok with just a sore neck the next day.  Tropp and Conboy are both off the team, and I believe both now have dropped out of school.  There is a possibility of them re-enrolling next year.

Kampfer just had a day in court regarding the football player that assaulted him resulting in his earlier skull fracture.  They're investigating the on-ice incident to decide if charges will be pressed.

After Kampfer went down his father broke into MSU's locker room to confront Conboy.  I don't think much will come of it but he has been banned from most athletic buildings on campus.

Kampfer may play this weekend.  They're taking on Notre Dame today so they'll need all the help they can get.

I'm rather torn between hating the AD for killing the atmosphere and appreciating his effort to not let the students' antics get out of control.  I just started grad school at Michigan this year and have to say that the games are better without people swearing for no reason.

That being said the Gary Glitter cheer is one of my favorites and I don't think that threatening to remove it is the right call.  At least things haven't been getting worse and for a while that should be enough for the AD - you're never going to make the hockey game completely clean, and why would you?  When you make an emotional investment in a team sometimes things get ugly (probably not an appropriate argument for the Gary Glitter cheer but in general)

As an aside here's an example of what happens when there's no ushers around and no one cares what we say:

Ann Arbor?  Yost has weather related damage so no hockey game tonight.  Anyone in the area up for getting the Cornell game?
