Anything in NYC? I tried asking the Flying Puck next to Penn Station, they wouldn't put it on w/ sound. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hockey / Re: Not a goal?

If the whistle was blown before the puck was in the net, even a fraction, it's no goal. As far as we know, Millan moved because he heard a whistle, and would have been better positioned for that split second if the play wasn't dead. Unfortunate, but far from unfair. The penalty calls were the bizarre part for me. Calling an extra minor off a faceoff, resulting in a 5 on 3 that leads to the opening goal, is gutsy at the least. The 'embellishment' call later on was just dumb.

Nevertheless, CU had their chances. We had no PPGs on plenty of chances, and were barely able to maintain possession in BU's zone, much less create good chances. Saying that the refs stole this one discredits Boston's solid defense and cheapens what was an entertaining game all around. I'm definitely looking forward to the next time these two teams meet, whether it's two years from now or sooner.

Seem to be settling in a bit better, now 8-5 with 2 minutes in the second. Sounds like Penn's band made the trip to South Bend...

Pretty sure it's just based on proximity. The committee switched MD and Dartmouth from the pairwise rankings, and that seems to be it. Easier financially for both programs if the teams don't have to drive or fly 30 halfway across the country.

I'm shocked that Mercyhurst ended up unranked though...

Definitely a virtuous cycle: more people --> better atmosphere --> more fun --> more repeat business.  It's great the men are idle Saturday -- maybe they'll do even better.

free tickets also make boosting attendance easier :)

Speaking of which, apparently Saturday's game is free for all students and anyone with men's hockey season tickets.

Go watch that second Brown goal. First, crazy acrobatic moves. Second, for the life of me I can't tell how the puck ends up from under Andy's body into the net. Does he accidentally kick it in? Does D'Agastino tip it? My guess is that Iles assumed the puck was already in the net, based on everyone else's reactions, and made a sloppy move. Regardless, one of the strangest looking plays I've seen live.

Ahem!  Regular season champion.  The ECAC Champion is the winner of the tournament.
It's still a very weird thing to see.

Can only be a positive for the league as a whole. So long as we can be competitive in this more difficult ECAC next year...

Quote from: Al DeFlorioThree penalties taken in the offensive zone in the third period while nursing a one-goal lead at Lynah East is a perfect example.
In the team's defense, two of those penalties were absolute joke calls.

(I don't disagree with your general point, though, just not sure that this example really illustrates it.)
In the game at Harvard?  Nonsense.  I called all three of them at the same time as the ref did.  Dumb.

Nevertheless, all weekend long, the referees didn't seem to give us any slack at all. Most of the calls were understandable, but have been allowed by the same referees earlier in the year. Our theory was that, after last weekend, the officials were instructed or independently decided to be less lenient this weekend. Not a criticism of the officials in the least, just an interesting observation.

Devils. I remember staying up till late in middle school watching the failed cup run in '02, and the successful one in '03. Devils are the reason I like hockey, simply.

As a current undergrad, I was embarrassed by the fish and the water bottle, and this is exactly why: with a few notable exceptions, the loyal fans of sections G through N now look at the student section with distaste and disdain. Anyone else notice how A and B swelled to numbers not yet seen this year last night? My fellow undergrads apparently believe the Harvard game is a great excuse to get blackout drunk at a hockey game and throw things onto the ice. There is a lot of tradition behind throwing the fish BEFORE the game, and it's one of the things that make Lynah Lynah. Before tonight, however, most people seemed to understand that it was over once the puck dropped. If you're a fan of throwing fish instead of a fan of hockey, this is something you apparently cannot comprehend. As is said, this is why we can't have nice things.

Did it ultimately cost us the game? No, there was plenty wrong with our play before that point. Did it severely hamper a team that was trying to salvage a poor effort with a strong third period comeback? Absolutely. And as someone who's followed this team across the country in my four years, it makes me sick.

But, to the fan in section J or K that threw the inflatable Nemo, thank you. I was amused.

Hockey / Re: Rule Changes?
February 18, 2011, 01:17:57 PM
Something I realized the other day while discussing the new rule changes. Recall the debate we had when BU pulled their goalie when they were up 5v3 vs. Cornell. One of the major risks is that, without icing, the defense has open reign to shoot at the open net. If icing also applies to penalty kills, suddenly pulling a goalie on a power play is much less risky.

Quote from: ebilmesDid we really not have any powerplays? When was the last time that happened?

No penalties called for us, but there were certainly some questionable moments. At least two hits that looked very much like boarding in the second period left uncalled. There was also a slash, exactly like the one called against Princeton the night before, that drew no penalty. Still encouraging that Cornell could score three at even-strength.

Not sure if anyone here would have an answer for this, but it seemed questionable to me. We were sitting right next to the glass in the Cornell attacking zone (what would be section A in Lynah), and had a pretty good view of a hit that drew a penalty against Cornell. It looked a little questionable, and the referee in the zone clearly warned Devin but was prepared not to call it. Despite this, the referee outside the zone, who clearly had a worse view than the one right next to the play, called a penalty. Do referees normally consider which official has the better view in making calls? Is it unusual for the official outside the zone to call a minor when the one inside is prepared to let it go, and both have a view of the play?

Quote from: mountainredBuffalo 78 Cornell 66 @ Newman.  An astounding 28% shooting night from inside the arc.  How is that even possible?

This is looking like a lost season for hoops, and if that is the price to pay for last season so be it.  There is time out there for Courtney's first batch of recruits next season, but the rebuilding may not start until then.

I'm doing some cleaning around my apartment and came across an ESPN magazine from last spring. On the "page 2" editorial by Steve Wulf there is this about sports agony and ecstasy:

"Imagine what it was like on the Cornell campus on March 19, what with the double celebration over the Big Red men's basketball team upsetting Temple in Jacksonville and the women's hockey team beating No. 1 Mercyhurst in the Frozen Four in Minneapolis.".

Don't forget the men's ice hockey team was on its way to winning the ECAC and the wrestling time was having a very good weekend as well.

Yes, it will be a very tough year for men's ice hockey and basketball, but when weekends like March 19 - 21, 2010 happen, it is so very sweet, very special and very memorable. I'm okay with this trade off. IMHO, it is much better than the sense of entitlement that some schools (like the one ~ 5 miles down the road from me or any in the SEC) have with respect to their athletic teams.

Regarding that weekend, it was spring break and dead quiet :D

But there remains a glorious memory, sitting in a house on State St. the Sunday after the Men's hockey team won the ECAC title, flipping channels between basketball beating up Wisconsin and the women headed for triple OT. Absolute delirium.

Giants haven't been able to run most of the game with Seubert out. Boothe blocking well on pass coverage, but can't seem to work well on the run.
I thought he played well enough considering that center isn't (as far as I'm aware) a position he'd previously played in the NFL.

Did he even play it in college?

ETA:  From his Giants.com profile:

QuoteFour-year starter who played 3 different positions at Cornell...Started his career as a right guard before shifting to right tackle as a junior, then moved to left tackle early in his senior year

It's amazing he was able to step into the role at all, considering the circumstances. But it was pretty clear he was understandably focused on getting the snap off, instead of making space for an inside run. You have to hope the Giants keep him around next year, he's been absolutely solid in a difficult role.
