Hockey / Re: mascot head missing
February 28, 2008, 12:41:51 AM
I know this is completely beside the point and I'll catch heat for it, but an official representative of the Athletics Department should know how to write better than that.  "...help in an issue that occurred"?  "...in addition to several Cornell events of which it is very popular with small children"?  "The incidence"?!  Seriously??  ::smashfreak::
I was also troubled by the wording and creative grammar in the release, I couldn't tell if the mascot was wearing the head at the time of the heist, and, if not, why he was not wearing it in the second half of the most important b-ball game in the last twenty years. If he was wearing the head, shouldn't he be able to identify the perp? If not, shouldn't he be charged with negligence for leaving the head lying around?

I truly hope you regain full health and have a long, productive, and fulfilling life. I'm not sure why, but from your previous posts and because of the maturity of your writing, I would have guessed that you were in your 40s, not your 20s. It doesn't matter whether or not I agree with your take on our health-care system (I wouldn't dare offend the anti-political police on this board by offering my opinion, lest they pounce on me!), but I am proud that you are a Cornellian! Thanks for the post; you have revived my hope that this most recent group of grads will continue to do Cornell proud. Again, best wishes on your full recovery.
I didn't think it was worth a new thread, but according to ESPN's bracketology, Cornell is a #13 seed set up to play #4 Purdue. If that holds true, I have a feeling I won't be too popular in my Carnellian Red!

I kind of liked it two years ago when the state of Indiana didn't have a single team in the NC$$ tournament.
Better Purdue than Indiana. Indiana's colors are cream and crimson! What would suck worse than that? On the upside, though, at least you would kind of blend in with the Indiana crowd!

Here's one of the many puzzlers that keep me up at night: Would it be correct to call a brawl involving the UNH and Vermont men's hockey teams a catfight? ::crazy::

Though, to her credit, the goalie does sucker punch someone about 55 seconds into the video.
Yes, probably as many as 50% of today's youth are no-good, lazy, video game playing, long hair growing, skateboarding, drinking and drugging burdens to society, but that's totally irrelevant when discussing Ivy admissions.
Your sentence (with edits) accurately describes many members of my high school class and freshman dorm. :-)  Fortunately, most of them turned out OK. So, come to think of it, maybe things haven't changed that much after all.
So what you're saying is that you think a 4-year undefeated streak having to constantly face some of the strongest competitors across the nation is more impressive (and improbable) than a single-game "any given night" one-and-done upset in a basketball tournament?
No, I said it was far more improbable. The reason I used the Georgetown-Villanova comparison was that it is widely considered to be the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history. Also, what are the odds of shooting 79 percent for the game and 90 percent in the second half, and still only winning by two points?

A better comparison is Edwin Moses' streak of 122 wins (including 107 finals) in the 400 intermediate hurdles. I think Moses' feat is even more impressive than Sanderson's.

We can also depend on the kindness of strangers:  there is, in fact, a scenario where we lose both games and end up in fourth.
Happened last year, but two years in a row would really be tempting the hockey gods.
Unless the hockey gods favor Cornell over all others in the pantheon of truly deserving hockey teams.
To add to what Robb said, Cornell has routinely putting out press releases about the record number of applications they have been receiving as have most of the Ivies.  Whatever they are calling the current generation of high school kids - Gen Y, Boomer Echo, etc. - there are a heck of a lot more of them than there was in 1990 when I applied and I wonder if I would be accepted at Cornell now.  My high school routinely graduated 400 a year into the mid-80s and then the numbers started dropping until bottoming out around 220 in about 1993.  They are over 400 again and the town had to build a new middle school, build an addition to the high school, and reopen an elementary school that had been shuttered.  Overall the town population has only slightly increased.

Just wondering chominky, did your son also apply to Arts?
Don't overestimate Gen Y. They are not smarter than past generations; they certainly are not better educated. Back in my day, kids used to read books instead of surfing the Internet and playing video games! We also were not overly concerned with finding ways to maximize our SAT scores. We just took the SATs and lived with the result. I get the impression that many of the "wunderkinds" today play the recruiting game better and get "coached up" to maximize their scores. Had we grown up in the same environment, I'm sure we could have done the same.

Wrestling crushes Harvard 37 to 9 to clinch its sixth consecutive Ivy title. In the process, the team extended its Ivy dual meet winning streak to 33. Great job considering all the injuries.
Agree 100%, but, to be fair, Harvard's team was decimated by injuries this year as well.
Al, I didn't realize that Harvard was missing as many as eight of its top ten wrestlers. That certainly explains their record. People who don't follow wrestling just don't understand how punishing it is. Considering the likelihood of getting injured in college wrestling, Cael Sanderson's 159-0 record and four NCAA titles at Iowa State is an almost miraculous feat. I consider Sanderson's accomplishments to be far more improbable than Villanova's upset of Georgetown in 1985.

It is interesting that Cornell and Brown finish the season against the same four teams:

Brown
Princeton (H)
Penn (H)
Harvard (A)
Dartmouth (A)

Cornell
Dartmouth (H)
Harvard (H)
Penn (A)
Princeton (A)

I sure hope we seal the deal at home next weekend. I don't relish traveling to the Killer P's (even in their weakened state) needing a win to clinch. I also cringe at the thought of possibly having to root for Harvard to knock off Brown.

Thanks for the great recap! According to some posters on Laxpower, Romero is injured and will be out for a few weeks.

In Kornheiser's defense, he made the big time as a Binghamton grad and had the good sense to send his daughter to Cornell! Plus, he often has a Cornell football helmet on his desk during PTI. Where else can you find that kind of free advertising? As for John Feinstein, I agree that he can be irritating in interviews, but he sure can write.
