Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
billhoward Swampy Al DeFlorio Noel appears to be averse to searches. Has a search been done for a major sport head coach since Brian Earl's hiring? Look at lacrosse: Pietramala to Tambroni to DeLuca to Kerwick to Milliman to Buczek. Add Koll to Grey in 2021. And, of course: Austin to Archer in 2012. All elevated from the then current coaching staff. Why change what works? It seems increasinby nshapiro - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
Ken711 RichH Ken711 So Penn's new AD wants to set a plan for improvements to their football program, and Cornell.....silence. What’s a “new AD?” Athletic Director. Umm...I think the question was a humorous jest implying that in the Cornell Universe, there will never be such a thing as a 'new AD'by nshapiro - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
Swampy Ken711 Swampy I wonder if fans can shame them into doing something. For example, distribute paper bag masks before the game the same way we distribute newspapers before hockey games. I saw a few letter to the editors in the Cornell Daily Sun a few months back. Yeah, but we need something that will draw national attention. I can’t imagine the administration would be happy to see Sportsby nshapiro - Other Sports

NDak split with Q, our only common opponent...so does that mean that a win tonight and a split with Q (or a tie tonight and a winning record against Q) means that our pairwise comparison with NDak goes in our favor?by nshapiro - Hockey

Re: Stats - 2 years ago
If I am reading the CHN pages correctly, RPI uses weighted winning percentage, so it is better to lose an OT game on the road (.45 * 1.2) than win an OT game at home (.55* .8)? That can't be correct can it?by nshapiro - Hockey
Re: Interesting news about Harvard admissions - 2 years ago
dbilmes arugula On the legacy point, I was always under the impression that legacy was only meaningful if the parent alumnus also wrote a big check, like 6 figures big. Anyone have any insight? I don't know if that is true or not, but I do know that I have been meeting with applicants for many years on behalf of CAAAN. Most years, one or two of the students I meet with have some type of legacy coby nshapiro - Other Sports
Re: Wrestling 21-22 - 2 years ago
Great performance by Cornell, including a freshman Ramirez upsetting Stanford's national champ at 165. Possible injury to our heavyweight, and I thought some terrible work by the ref in general. I am sure a better recap will be coming soon.by nshapiro - Other Sports

Applicants with greater academic preparation and accomplishments expect to be admitted at higher rates relative to less qualified applicants. " OMFG!!! Re: Men’s soccer - 2 years ago
upprdeck Swampy upprdeck thats soccer.. give up 1-0-0-2-1-1 and go 3-2-1. The margin is so small and the reward for the D when you get ahead is to make it even harder by bunkering. A modified scoring system might help a bit but many would think it would ruin the game to try to have teams try to score and not just play 10 in the box. Even something simple like on set pieces limit how many can starby nshapiro - Other Sports
Re: Polls - 2 years ago
ajh258 Poll are basically 90% wrong this point in the year, and RPI was abysmally bad this weekend. We probably should be somewhere lower like where we are on Pairwise. We also haven’t played Quinnipiac, Clarkson, and ND. That said, the performance has been above expectations so far. This is still among the top half of teams under Schafer era. Re: State of Cornell Athletics - 2 years ago
billhoward Swampy...But Cornell has perpetual excellence in men's hockey and lacrosse. And in recent years, women's hockey. Men's soccer is also quite respectable. The abysmal states of football and basketball has to do with coaches, alumni networks, recruiting (closely related to alumni networks), tradition, and how much the administration (esp. the AD) cares. Re: 3-on-3 overtime and the RPI & PWR - 2 years ago
jkahn For pairwise, we are actually under .500. Home wins are multiplied by a .8 factor, and home losses by 1.2. So our 2-0 record gets factored down to (1.1 x .8) wins and (.9 x 1.2) losses, totalling .88 wins and 1.08 losses. The committee in charge obviously thinks 3 vs. 3 overtime is fairly meaningless weighting it only .55 vs. .45, why not go back to 5 vs. 5. 1. I agree completely withby nshapiro - Hockey

Swampy jtwcornell91 ugarte love 3x3 sorry! (do not love 55% but would probably be fine if we could negotiate this to, say, 70%) I've just barely got used to the 3-2-1-0 point system in international/European hockey, but accepting an OT win as 55% of a win is a lot harder than 2/3 of a win.
