Re: Cornell 3 RPI 0 Postgame - 15 years ago
You know, I don't expect them to sweep the next 12 games. It could certainly happen, of course. Though I have only seen the team twice this year, one of them was at Princeton, where I watched the Red eke out a win and I will not be surprised at all if the Tigers take the rematch. The NJ boys are a good team. OTOH, the Red have probably improved and they are playing great hockey. If they cby heykb - Hockey

Re: CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT - 15 years ago
I agree with those of you who want to fix the NCAA selection process. You are right. Still, I think it is smart to game the system as it exists. Besides the fact that others game the system and there is nothing unethical about it, it also may help to expose the absurdity in the existing selection mechanism. And who knows, there may be some compelling on-the-field competition as a result ofby heykb - Other Sports
Re: men's basketball at st joes 12/22 cornell club of phila selling tickets - 15 years ago
All of St. Joe's games at the Palestra have a list price of $30. There is an ad floating around the Philly market for "buy two games, get one free" so I guess they know they have a bit of a challenge on their hands selling out at that price.by heykb - Other Sports
Re: Guest Editorial in Today's Sun - 16 years ago
Waaay back when the Buds began, some of us originals did some things right. Once it was clear that Ultimate would be more than a one-year wonder, the guys made a point of getting formal recognition - from requesting SAFC funding to getting gym credit for participation. We also got on the schedules for (the late lamented) Lower Alumni field for outdoor games and Barton Hall for indoor games. It waby heykb - Hockey
Re: Happy Randy Wilson Day! - 16 years ago
He missed the post. It was a very casual wrist shot and it just scooted off to the right, "wide of the cage" as Roy said on the clip. Hennessey was skating like a madman and went whizzing by Wilson to collect the puck and pass it up to Nethery. Wilson was kind of dawdling, he was in a daze that he had missed the shot. When Hennessey went by him, he woke up, but Randy was basically ouby heykb - Hockey
Happy Randy Wilson Day! - 16 years ago
You'll have to rename the attached file to an mp3 extension after saving to your computer. It's worth it. Still the loudest Lynah has ever been... Thank goodness my girlfriend was in Vet school and I didn't feel like leaving Ithaca after graduating. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of Randy Wilson Day. Princeton on Sat 2/23 - 16 years ago
We know that when Princeton says "sellout at Baker Rink" it means not a thing because there are always 500-plus empty seats available for those buying standing room tickets. Bill, be careful. Baker Rink is small and Princeton is quite good this year. You might actually be standing, or even get shut out. Also, iirc, last year the line at the box office to buy standing room was prettyby heykb - Hockey
Re: Cornell's new aid plan - 16 years ago
As one whose annual parental tuition contribution topped out at about $100, I applaud this move. It does take years to pay off loans and having them capped makes it possible for financially needy students to work off their educations in a reasonable time. Even with a Regents scholarship, federal grants and maxed out on loans, I still needed a healthy chunk of Cornell scholarship money to handlby heykb - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: Red Hot Hockey: The Fan Experience - 16 years ago
Count me among those who were delighted with the event. Sure, my Philly-based 16 year old knew more of the cheers than most of the people in the section, and only a couple of people knew to ask us for some of our newspaper for the BU introductions, but it was a blast. The plusses outweighed the minuses. + I got to take my wife and (the one CU hockey-loving) son to a game + There were a tby heykb - Hockey
MSG tix - according to Lynah box office - 16 years ago
This isn't a ticket exchange request, just a statement of the status for those trying to get tickets through Cornell. I just got off the phone with a helpful gentleman at Lynah who is sending me the last 4 tickets for non-students in the Cornell-sold sections. They're actually in 4 different sections, so I'll be scrambling to arrange it so we can sit together. They're in the 300 level (list prby heykb - Hockey

Re: On to the semis: Cornell 12, Albany 11 (recap thread) - 17 years ago
We enjoyed the game. Along with a ton of other folks, I wasn't particularly happy with Princeton's rule that you couldn't bring umbrellas into the stadium. There wound up being a pile of "I'll leave it here until after the game" umbrellas near the entrance. I actually found my umbrella on the way out. I was grateful for that. Yes, the face-off violations were pretty much all "jumping the gun." It wasn't so much flinching as flat-out going for the ball before the ref's signal. Karlby heykb - Other Sports
Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: Cornell v. Albany (pre-game) - 17 years ago
According to weather.com, there's a 50% chance of rain on Saturday in Princeton. The last CU lax game I saw was their upset loss to Penn in Philadelphia last year. And it was raining. In general, my experience has been that Cornell teams are affected more than their opponents when the weather is bad. I'm still planning on coming; I'll be there rain or shine. My optimism is lessened, thoby heykb - Other Sports
Re: Ivy Championships Standings 2006-2007 - 17 years ago
The Cornell Ultimate team was formed in 1973, by Jon Cohn (aka JC), a Hall of Fame disc talent. He roused his buddies and floormates in UHall 2 to start the team. I had the good fortune to be there for some of Cornell's first tournament successes. There have been good years and so-so years, but there is no doubt that Cornell being in the hunt for Ultimate titles is never surprising to people wby heykb - Other Sports
Re: Freshman (Tony Romano) - 17 years ago
I mentioned this in a game thread a few months back, but Tony Romano seems a lot like Brock Tredway. Tredway scored scads of goals for CU back in the 70's, but didn't really even sniff the NHL as a pro. Another similarity between them is that neither of them is much of a fan of the physical game. Tredway could take a check OK, but he worked pretty hard to get hit as little as possible. Romanoby heykb - Hockey

Re: Cornell 3 Maine 6 Post-Game Discussion Thread - 17 years ago
Apologies for the delay, but I finally have time to write up my observations from Estero. Cornell outplayed UNH and deserved to win. The PP was hopeless, of course. For the past several years, it's been "get it to the point for a one-time slappah" and that's what it continues to be, even though we don't have the guns for it and everyone who's scouted us has to know it's coming. I'm one of Hillel's +89. I'm bringing a fellow Cornellian from the Balto-Wash area. We were talking about Hillel's info that Princeton scattered our seats around the rink. My friend noted that it doesn't really matter that much since it's mostly a Cornell home game anyway. I will give credit to the P.U. fans last year - they made a pretty good racket when they beat us last year. Let's hope weby heykb - Hockey
Re: As Expected, "Zero Tolerance" For Friday Night - 17 years ago
The giant papier mache phallus was carried off the ice by Lance Nethery, who had just finished an impassioned plea over the P.A. that fans not throw stuff onto the ice. He was visibly disappointed when the item arrived on the ice not 30 seconds after completion of his speech. It was quite a sight. And fish were certainly thrown on the ice that night, as well. NCAA Lax semi's and finals in Philadelphia - 18 years ago
Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia. What could be more fun? It seems that the NCAA is bringing their traveling lacrosse show to Philly for the Division 1 semi-finals and finals, with a bonus day of Division II and Division III finals, too. Anyway, it is certainly far too early to project that the ol' alma mater might actually be playing on Saturday, May 27 at the Linc. But, if we dreamby heykb - Other Sports

Robb19 games left, but the three consolations can end in ties, so that's 2^16 * 3^3 possibilities = 1.8 million combinations. At 1 second each (just a guess), that's 491 hours of computing time. The only way to get it done before the actual events would be parallel pocessing on about 5 machines... I daresay you'll get a *lot* more than one per second. How about 100/sec at the least?
