Re: WHY CORNELL WILL NO LONGER DOMINATE THE ECAC - 17 years ago
I agree with almost everything you say. However, emphasizing team discipline and a system doesn't have to be restricted to a stifling, defense-first approach. It's worked for Cornell in the past and may continue to work, with some offensive tweaking. Over the years, I've watched other teams with more raw talent - Michigan in particular - and these teams aren't invincible. Red Berenson gives hby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: WHY CORNELL WILL NO LONGER DOMINATE THE ECAC - 17 years ago
This was a transitional year in more ways than one, and we can get some perspective on it by taking a look at what happened to last year's national champion Wisconsin team that this year went 17-17-4. A gradual change over the last few years is that the Cornell program HAS been gaining stature and attracting better players. This makes the team more vulnerable to early departures. Adding the NHby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Senior letdown - 17 years ago
Comparing today's kids to those of the Dryden era ignores the fact that college hockey in the Dryden period was almost never a springboard to the NHL. There was little to no incentive to leave early.by ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: BU players attacked - 17 years ago
billhowardLiz '05billhowardNot to blame the victims, but 4 am is kind of late to be out. You are right that 4am incidents are less likely than 2am incidents. Bad guys don't work long hours if they can avoid it. If there are cops online I think they can verify crime tapers off around 2 am on weekends. Re: Ned Harkness to be honored at RPI - 17 years ago
BeeeejursusminorBeeeejursusminorNed Harkness is to be the third honoree in RPI's Ring of Honor. Why the 'Tute is doing this during the Colgate game instead of waiting a day until Cornell is in town is beyond me. It's possible that didn't fit with Ned's schedule. True, but do you think that Ned has a busy schedule these days? I don't keep the man's calendar, I'm offering a hypothetical wherby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Score updates on one's phone? - 17 years ago
Time to revive this one again. CSTV is only offering football and basketball scores so far this season. The Cingular links for collegiate and all other sports I tried are dead. Any other options out there for text message scores? I can't always be near a computer Friday/Saturday nights, and have come to rely on these messages.by ninian '72 - Hockey

Feathers Offensive - 17 years ago
And the NCAA's final word on the William & Mary feather dispute: The College of William and Mary received notice Aug. 3, 2006 that the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Executive Committee has denied the College’s appeal regarding use of the institution’s athletic logo. “We strongly disagree with the decision by the Executive Committee and find it absurd that the NCAA continuesby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Sasha Pokulok signs with the Capitals - 17 years ago
Real surprising that the Caps would push this, given the amount of young talent already in the pipeline. OTOH, they had one of the worst D's in the NHL last year, and they may be eager to ratchet up the retooling. I was looking forward to seeing Sasha play at Verizon someday, but later rather than sooner.by ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Interesting NCAA mascot policy - 17 years ago
billhowardninian '72The authors of this piece are not entirely up to speed on the NCAA's byzantine decision-making. The NCAA has informed athletic power William & Mary that they may continue to refer to themselves as "The Tribe," which ties in with one of their initial missions as a school for Indians. Re: Lacrosse poll 5/1/06 - Cornell third - 18 years ago
Too lazy to check this out, but there was an additional complaint in those days that southern schools would only consent to play us early in the season, which - given the difference in weather and practice field conditions between Ithaca and say, Charlottesville - would give them an additional edge in playing us. Re: LeNeveu-Eliot comparison - 18 years ago
Swampy The one thing this doesn't tell you is that it's a statue of Dryden in the middle of a game! It's a classic Dryden pose on those Cornell and Canadian teams that dominated the opposition! I love it! It's dead-on. Even leaning on the crossbar. I wondered how much of this was calculated theater on Dryden's part. Motionless and looking bored. Must have driven other teams crazy.by ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: guilty - 18 years ago
In this case we have even more reasons for skepticism. Since the alleged victim is black and the alleged attackers white, we can look to the Dept. of Justice's Natonal Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS, at , see table 42) to see the frequency of white on black rapes in 2003. The number of white rapists reported by black victims in 2003 is so small it's reported as 0%. This table is only for siby ninian '72 - Other Sports

Re: Dividing loyalties? - 18 years ago
I've talked about this one in other posts and hesitate to reguritate it all again, but I was an undergrad at Cornell during the late Harkness/early Bertrand years and was there for the perfect season. I was in grad school at Michigan 72-78. The hockey program had fallen on very hard times but turned around while I was there, improving enough to make it to the Frozen Four finals in 77 before falby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Johnson Stays At Michigan - 18 years ago
Whoa, check the smileys. Deep breath now... Understandable how Yost could get under the skin of some of the Faithful. Too much like us, and derivative at that. Doesn't diminish the quality of the atmosphere. Also, a whole different style of hockey, which we might not all appreciate. I.e., if you throw enough speed and creativity into the offensive end, you don't have to play defense too hardby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Cornell-Wisconsin postgame thread (post-season thread?) NCAA quarterfinals 2006 - 18 years ago
Did a quick check on the Caps message board regarding prospects. Not that their speculation is any more informed than ours regarding where players will be next year, but there are a number of scenarios with Sasha that are tied to the Caps long-term rebuilding process. Mgmt thinks highly of their young defense prospects, but they appear to be overstocked. The Caps really loaded up on draft pickby ninian '72 - Hockey
